This collection of tracks by pop singer, Billy Vaughn, features such trademark songs as "La Paloma", "Lili Marleen", and "Blue Hawaii".
Studio orchestra leader Billy Vaughn may have been even more popular in Germany in the 1950s and '60s than he was in the U.S., which helps explain why the most comprehensive compilation of his work originates there. This two-CD, 50-track album of original Dot Records recordings contains 20 of Vaughn's 28 Billboard Hot 100 chart entries, including the major U.S. hits "Melody of Love," "The Shifting Whispering Sands," "Sail Along Silvery Moon" and "Raunchy." Then there are songs that topped the German charts, like "Wheels" and "La Paloma." The set has a definite German tilt, with such titles as "Zwei Gitarren Am Meer and "Unter Dem Doppeladler" on the song list (both of which made the German Top 20), but it also gives a broad sense of Vaughn's arranging and performing ...

WHEN DREAM & DAY UNITE, the major label debut from prog-metal act Dream Theater, includes the tracks "YTSE Jam" and "Only A Matter Of Time."
Dream Theater's first official release gave an indication that this was a talented band that combined the styles of Yes, Rush, and Queensr˙che. The latter seemed to be too big of an influence at this stage of their career. Vocalist Charlie Dominici's voice is not powerful enough to carry out the band's otherwise convincing intensity, and his attempt to sound like Queensr˙che's Geoff Tate was unsuccessful. The music here is not as heavy as it would become in the '90s but could still be classified as progressive metal. Guitarist John Petrucci and drummer Mike Portnoy established themselves as competent musicians, but their individual styles were not yet refined. The band's originality does shine through on "Light Fuse and Get Away," "The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun," and "Only a Matter of Time." The odd-meter measures and numerous time changes gave the group a complexity that hadn't been experienced for an entire decade in the rock genre. "YTSE Jam" was essentially their answer to Rush's "YYZ" and became a staple in the band's live set. The session was marred mostly by subpar singing, too many metal clichés, and poor production. There is, however, enough interesting playing to make it a worthwhile listen for fans of this genre, and is certainly essential for Dream Theater fans. ~ Robert Taylor

The discs, distributed by Allegro, cater to the casual fan arriving at '30s and '40s jazz and swing standards by way of the early 21st century retro trend. It even rips off the kitschy, tiki-style artwork of Capitol's Ultra Lounge series. Heart Breakers is a two-disc set focusing on slow-burn jazz and vocal standards from artists such as Dinah Washington, Patti Page, Vic Damone, and Lena Horne. No liner notes are included, leaving the listener to only guess at where and when these songs were recorded, and with whom.
