EMI-Capitol Special Markets' How Great Thou Art is a collection of inspirational and gospel songs Tennessee Ernie Ford recorded in 1983. These aren't necessarily bad recordings, but they do not rank among his finest, whether it's judged against his other gospel albums or his secular work. The production is a little too clean and Ford's performance is a little too mannered. Nevertheless, it's certainly listenable, and any longtime fan looking for some pleasant background music at a budget price should check this out. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | John Digweed Stark Raving Mad CDs (2003)
How Great Thou Art
$15.59 This is a continuous in-the-mix CDcompiled and mixed by DJ John Digweed & Muir.
Stark Raving Mad, the soundtrack to an American film ("imagine, if you can, Trainspotting meets Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels!"), is a two-disc mix album allowing resident superstar DJ John Digweed a chance to air many of his own Bedrock-affiliated tracks -- and boost the profile of his studio boffin, Nick Muir (who co-produces all of Digweed's tracks). Though he's been one of trance's main figureheads for half a decade, Digweed's been less willing to stick with the style on a constant basis, and the tracks here reflect that. Unlike Oakenfold and Van Dyk, he's willing to push things forward slightly, with more stylistic detours and fewer concessions to fan-friendly effects and breakdowns. Early on the second disc, Digweed even approaches hard house with his spinning of "White Island" by Luke Fair, though the next track, his own "Beautiful Strange," takes the mix back into familiar territory. Digweed and Muir do accomplish much together; their tracks have the detailed, sonically sculpted perfection that's become de rigeur for trance, but also a unique sound that has nothing to do with the trance blueprint. And even though most of their productions are brief interstitial tracks, they claim two of the highlights, "Mondrian" and "Slingshot." "Kritical" ...

| | Judy Canova Ozark Nightingale CD (2005)
How Great Thou Art
$9.99 Even though she is not as well-known as many of her vocal contemporaries, those who might have crossed paths with Judy Canova aren't likely to forget her. Not only was she a remarkably gifted singer, but also an actress whose flawless comedic timing was her calling card. As precious little of her sides have been issued on compact disc, Ozark Nightingale (2004) is as definitive a statement as exists for a modern audience. While still a pre-teen, Canova was one-third of the minstrelesque Three Georgia Crackers song and dance act with her brother and sister. Her natural penchant for wisecracks coupled with a boisterous persona and lanky presence eventually led her to the attention of Warner Brothers Studios where she was cast in a number of films. Canova likewise made several Broadway appearances, which included work with Busby Berkeley and in the Ziegfeld Follies on the Great White Way. The 14 selections on this compilation are from radio programs circa the early- to mid-'40s. Although not explicitly stated, presumably some of these are from her CBS Radio comedy series, as she mixes undeniably homespun humor with unique, if not novel interpretations of popular standards and seminal country & western material. Canova also did her part for Uncle Sam during World War II, participating in the Armed Forces Radio Service shows Command Performance, Mail Call and specials such as the November 26, 1942 Elgin Thanksgiving Tribute to Our Armed Forces broadcast. She warbles away memorable renderings of "Too Late ...

| | Billy Strange Strange Country CD (1966)
How Great Thou Art
$6.19 Herein lies one of the most aptly titled records to ever come out of Nash Vegas. Billy Strange's Strange Country is full of all sorts of sounds that would make producers on the underground tip go wild today. When it came out back in the '60s, no one knew quite to make of it, with its layers of 6-, 12- and even 8-string guitars, banjos, tambourines, maracas, and what not. Whether it was Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright," or Barry McGuire's "Green Green," or even "Stranger in Your Town," these tunes were plucked, picked, strummed, and beaten out of acoustic guitars and other strings; mandolins played a role too, primarily as percussion instruments. This baby is psychedelic without meaning to be and is a bona fide weirdo classic. ~ Thom Jurek
Recorded in the 1960s (the liner notes do not specify the exact date), this was a sessionman supersession of sorts, also featuring Joe Maphis on banjo, Tommy Tedesco on second guitar, Jimmy Bond on bass, and Earl Palmer on drums. Strange offers fluid, crisp instrumental interpretations of a mixed bag of folk and pop tunes, including not only "Don't ...
