During the 1970s and into the '80s mellow rockers were predictable forces on AM style radio (and frequent visitors to the U.S. top 10) with intricately written, breezy pop tunes. The VENTURA HIGHWAY compilation omits the love-it-or-hate-it signature tune, "A Horse with No Name," but includes a bevy of hard-to-dispute classics, such as the title track, "I Need You," and their pert final hit, 1982's "You Can Do Magic." Ventura Highway & Other Favorites
$12.35 This 1994 release by the duo of Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Buckley may sound at first like a "why bother?" but surprisingly, HOURGLASS is not only not embarrassing, it's actually quite good. On their '70s hits, Bunnell sounded uncannily like a sweeter-voiced Neil Young; the decreased vocal resemblance here probably has more to do with the ravages of Young's own vocal cords, but it gives the harmonies much more of their own character.
The glistening folk-rock of hits like "A Horse With No Name" and "Ventura Highway" is all over this disc, with Bunnell and Buckley both contributing several surprisingly full-bodied pop songs. The inclusion of a nothing-special remake of ...
| | Neil Diamond Hot August Night CDs (1972) Remastered
Ventura Highway & Other Favorites
$15.89 Recorded live at the Greek Theatre, Los Angeles, California on August 24, 1972. Originally released on MCA Records (6896). Includes liner notes by Karen Shearer.
In addition to his excellent skills as a songwriter, Neil Diamond is also known for his bold, often theatrical performance style. One glance at the cover of HOT AUGUST NIGHT--Diamond clothed in denim and Native American jewelry, with his hands hovering over his body, and an expression suggesting a trance of intensity--and the listener knows he or she is in for some serious performing. The pop icon delivers as expected; HOT AUGUST NIGHT, recorded in 1972 at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles, documents the epic showmanship of a Neil Diamond concert.
Listeners will certainly ...
| | Doobie Brothers Sibling Rivalry CD (2000)
Ventura Highway & Other Favorites
$13.99 This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
The Doobies' first studio album of the new millennium--and their first in almost a decade--finds the veteran California hitmakers in fine form. With founding members Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons on hand, things are obviously covered in the vocal harmony department, and the rhythm section--featuring longtime drummers Michael Hossack and Keith Knudsen--sounds loaded for bear as well.
Musically, save for the occasional hip-hop rhythm ("Jericho") what's here isn't all that different ...
| | America Complete Greatest Hits CD (2001)
Ventura Highway & Other Favorites
$10.49 Principally recorded between 1972 and 1983. Includes liner notes by Barry Alfonso.
Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch and Bill Inglot (DigiPrep).
America defined the soft-rock sound of the '70s. They wanted to be Crosby, Stills and Nash so badly that they figured out a way to not only pull it off, but beat CSN at their own game, logging even more hit singles than their chief inspiration. THE COMPLETE GREATEST HITS, true to its title, contains all those chart-toppers, as well as some songs that may be unfamiliar to the casual listener (if you weren't paying attention at the time, it's doubtful you'd recall the band's early-'80s comeback hit "You Can do Magic," for example).
While nobody's making ...

| | Very Best Of Brother Dave Gardner CD (1999)
Ventura Highway & Other Favorites
$9.09 Recorded live at Jones Hall For The Performing Arts, Houston, Texas in 1969.
There are few (if any) comedians on par with "Brother Dave" Gardner. His countrified logic and fiercely Southern points of view became a huge hit in the late '50s and '60s, prompting several Top Ten long-players as well as numerous appearances on the talk and variety TV circuit. Gardner's preaching style of delivery is subversively coupled with his razor sharp wit and equally well-honed double-entendre. By the time of this 1969 set at Jones Hall for the Performing Arts in Houston, Texas, Gardner's popularity had slightly derailed, after a minor brush with the law earlier in the decade. Likewise, his embrace of the late-'60s counterculture would isolate much of his oddly conservative audience base. As evidenced by the spirited and manic-paced routines featured on Very Best of Brother Dave (1999) -- first issued as Out Front in the '70s -- the comedian hasn't altered his liberal ideologies in the least. If anything, the changing times have allowed Gardner a sense of added freedom. Within the first few minutes he references then Alabama Governor George Wallace as "our Fuhrer," before commenting "if God ran ...
| | Mana En Vivo CDs (1995)
Ventura Highway & Other Favorites
$13.85 Recorded live in August and September, 1994. Includes liner notes by Mana.
All songs written or co-written by Fher and/or Alex except "El Rey" (Jose Alfredo Jimenez).
In terms of live albums, Maná's En Vivo is exemplary. It's filled with hits, offers crystalline sound quality, and boasts remarkable band-audience rapport, highlighted by the numerous moments when the crowd sings along to the better-known songs. Fher Olvera is a captivating frontman, and it's him in particular who engages this lively crowd most. The band as a whole deserves mention too, though. ...

Ventura Highway & Other Favorites
$11.19 Presume that Alanis Morissette or PJ Harvey decided to move in a heavier, less singer/songwriter-ish direction and fronted a more metallic type of band -- a band that rocked forcefully yet was quite melodic and had some goth tendencies ŕ la Evanescence as well as a healthy appreciation of Garbage and the Cranberries. Alev really does sound like that, and the Munich-based outfit pulls all of ...
