CEMA Special Markets' Bad, Bad Leroy Brown & Other Favorites is a pretty good budget-priced, ten-track collection containing some of Jim Croce's very best and most popular songs. "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," "Operator (That's Not the Way It Feels)," "Time in a Bottle," "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song," "Photographs and Memories," and "Roller Derby Queen" are all on this disc, which is enough to make it a great bargain. To be definitive, it would have needed "I Got a Name" and "Working at the Car Wash Blues," but considering what's here, it's certainly worth its low price. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Collectables' Bad, Bad Leroy Brown & Other Favorites is a pretty good budget-priced ten-track collection containing some of Jim Croce's very best and most popular songs. Please note that this edition includes the exact same track listing and cover art as the 1994 CEMA Special Markets release of the same name. The majority of Croce's Top Ten hits are represented, but to be definitive, this disc would have needed "I Got a Name" and "Working at the Car Wash Blues." ~ Al Campbell
Personnel: Jim Croce (vocals, guitar).

Bad Bad Leroy Brown & Other Favorites CD music
$22.89 U2 burst onto the scene at the onset of the '80s with a majestic, uplifting, earnest approach and a unique textural sound that endeared them to fans and critics alike. They spent the rest of the decade growing up in public, solidifying their status as post-punk icons, marrying the good intentions of old-school alternative rock with the epic sonic scale of classic '70s rockers, never sounding less than totally original and never pausing for a hits compilation--until 1998. BEST OF offers a good representation ...
| | Gabrielle Roth Zone Unknown CD (1997)
Bad Bad Leroy Brown & Other Favorites music CDs
$13.85 Mirrors musical director Gabrielle Roth takes her Five Rhythms (see Roth bio) onto the pavement and out into the steely nights of the city. Acoustic drums and percussion still set the trance-dance beats, but touches of electricity (bass, synth, drum programs) have infiltrated the hypnotic cadences. The result is an album more for pure dance (fun!) than for moving through emotional catharsis. Indeed, Roth's usual slogan, "Sweat your prayers," is slightly altered to "Dance your heart out and your ass off -- into the zone." The title cut is a slinky, almost spooky, version of her typical belly-dance "flowing" movement. Listening to this cut, one can easily see how the flowing movement will catalyze the emotion of fear -- very shadowy. "Downtown" includes the cool, muted jazz trumpet of Chris Botti, the funky bass of Sergio Bandao, and Roth's sultry voice coaxing, "Let's dance." The lively "Buffalo Dream" gallops in a 6/8 chaos cadence, but it has a Native American feel to it. "Avenue A" is a breathless run amid the streets and wires of the city, while "Jamu" returns to a slinkier blues chaos rhythm with Jai Uttal on guitars and synth and Mindy Jostyn on harmonica and vocals. The album ends with the smoldering stillness of "Drifting"; Mark Shulman is featured on the wailing guitar. If you've seen and danced to Roth's Wave video, you'd know how much Roth is a creature of the Village; this album celebrates the mysteries of the city while still staking claim to the soul. ~ Carol Wright

| | Secret Affair Glory Boys CD (1979) (Import) Import; Canada
Bad Bad Leroy Brown & Other Favorites songs
$18.09 Secret Affair first slid into the U.K.'s consciousness in September 1979 with their exhilarating debut single "Time for Action," which danced its way to number 13 in the charts. Britain was in the grip of a mod revival, spearheaded by the success of the Jam, and Secret Affair were perfectly placed to take advantage of the prevailing mood. Although their follow-up 45, "Let Your Heart Dance," stalled in the lower reaches of the Top 30, their debut album, which included both songs, was eagerly anticipated. Glory Boys didn't disappoint and quieted any sneering suggestions that this new crew of mods were merely Jam wannabes. Of course Secret Affair shared influences with their bigger brethren -- Tamla Motown and British beat bands -- but from them the group fashioned a unique style far removed from the Jam's own. This was partially due to singer Ian Page bringing his trumpet to the proceedings, gracing Affair with a much more genuine retro sound, while also adding further exhilaration to the music. Page's horn solo on "Don't Look Down" (with nods to, of all things, the E Street Band) just cooks -- it also punches up the aforementioned "Dance," and is vital to their cover of the Miracles' "Going to a Go-Go." The Jam were so impressed by the authenticity brass gave ...
