| | Dean Martin Hurtin' Country Songs CD Dean Martin Discography of CDs
Capitol released Hurtin' Country Songs along with another generous 15-track compilation, Late at Night With Dean Martin. Unlike its companion, which has a fairly random selection of songs, Hurtin' Country Songs has a clear-cut theme, namely country tunes Martin sang over the years, for both Capitol and Reprise. The compilers are clever -- so clever that the collection feels like an actual album, when it's really a collection of minor hits, singles, and album tracks. Nevertheless, there's a genuine momentum to the disc and it's filled with really great songs given an individual spin by Dean. After finishing Hurtin' Country Songs, it's hard to disagree with Willie Nelson's assessment in the liner notes that "no [singer] was more distinctive than Dean Martin. His records oozed personality, warmth, and believability. And that's what country music is all about." That is precisely true: Any listener going into this collection thinking that "Dino" and country is a kitsch mismatch will be surprised how truly effective this music is. It really is among the better Martin collections of the '90s. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Includes liner notes by Willie Nelson and Colin Escott.

| | Big League Babe, Vol. 2: The Christine Lavin Tribute Album CD (1998)
Hurtin' Country Songs music CDs
$16.45 Though the two Christine Lavin tribute albums are tributes in the traditional sense -- they feature mostly songs written by Lavin done by other people -- they also fit into a more general category of records Lavin has been associated with previously, such as the various artists compilations On a Winter's Night and When October Goes, in that they provide a showcase for other performers. Like the first Big League Babe album, the second has a CD booklet filled with information about the people on the record, including their biographies, discographies and contact information. Lavin has always been as interested in promoting her friends' careers as her own. But especially because her own work is so idiosyncratic, sentimental, and, usually, funny, it works less well for others than it does for her, and that's as true of this album as it was of the first one. A somewhat less stellar lineup of artists nevertheless includes Buddy Mondlock (whose "Santa Monica Pier" catches its gentle satire), Sara Hickman (who can't redeem "The Dakota"), Dar Williams (duetting with Hugh Blumenfeld on "The Kind of Love You Never Recover From," which David Wilcox sang on the first album), and Patty Larkin (who contributes an instrumental version of "Prisoners of Their Hairdos"), along with other lesser-known ...

Hurtin' Country Songs music CDs
$21.45 Solade is an Oberlin-trained, New York-based singer and trumpet player named Andrea Lindborg, working in collaboration with producer and multi-instrumentalist Francis Mbappe to create a vaguely Afro-Cuban-influenced take on jazz-pop that resembles no one so much as the mid-'80s crew of British artists who were doing much the same thing: Sade, Carmel, the Young Marble Giants spin-off Weekend, early Everything But the Girl, Pigbag, Basia, and so on. This is not a bad thing, since all of those bands had their charms. So does Solade, but to a lesser degree: Lindborg has a flirty, breathy singing voice that's charming, but thin and unfortunately limited. (It's difficult to gauge the quality of her trumpet playing, which tends to be restricted to a vaguely Chet Baker-like muted measure here and there, more decoration than an intrinsic part of the songs.) Of course, much the same could be said about most of the bands listed above (was there a weedier singer in the '80s than Weekend's Alison Statton?), but Solade's real weakness is in Mbappe's musical settings. The songs blend bossa nova-style acoustic guitars, Latin percussion, rubbery fretless basslines, and ...

Hurtin' Country Songs album
$11.79 The second studio set from this sideman supergroup of sorts follows its debut by six years but maintains a similar approach. While the first album recorded by the eight-piece ensemble (that gets together only sporadically between other full time gigs) was funk-influenced, this is pure '70s styled retro funk. Think Earth, Wind & Fire, P-Funk, the Crusaders, Tower of Power, James Brown, Rufus with Chaka Khan, you get the idea. To further cement the old school feel, the band recorded with mics and tube compressors from the era. The result is nearly an hour ...
