Mike Love has worn down the Beach Boys' cars-and-surf sound into empty exercises in nostalgia while Brian Wilson based his reputation among the rock intelligentsia almost entirely upon PET SOUNDS and the unreleased SMILE. Nevertheless, there are many Beach Boys cultists who feel that SUNFLOWER and SURF'S UP are the band's finest work.
Released in 1970 and '71 as the first products of their new Brother Records deal with Warner Brothers, whose commercial and artistic expectations were much different than the group had experienced at Capitol, these are relaxed, confident records with a progressive, experimental edge. While there's some missteps--Love's "Student Demonstration Time" is possibly the band's worst song ever--the high points are exquisite. Bruce Johnston's "Disney Girls," Carl Wilson's "Don't Go Near the Water," and Brian's "Til I Die," "Cool Cool Water" and the astonishing SMILE outtake "Surf's Up" are among the band's very finest songs.

Beach Boys Sunflower/Surf's Up Songs Sunflower/Surf's Up Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews misunderstood and underrated The Beach Boys, like the Guess Who, got a raw deal. Perhaps it was the enormous competition from the British invasion or the many great North American rock groups and musicians from the mid sixties to the mid seventies that impeded acceptance as rock icons. No matter, they were unique and brilliant and went far beyond the surfing sound that brands them. "Surfs Up", "Holland" and "Sunflower" should provide valuable testimony and insight into their great talent and place them where they should be - with the Byrds, The Beatles and The Band. The Short End of the Stick Sunflower/Surf's Up were two of the band's greatest records, records that stand up to Pet Sounds and Today!/Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!!!). Yet despite the quality of the music, the pop sensitivity of it was gone. The Beach Boys weren't a commercial act anymore; the failure to complete SMILE sapped that out of them like a spigot into a maple tree. The result were good albums that got ignored by the public. Which is a shame, because the stuff is just so darn good. You've got to admire that the group continued despite the fractured nature of their relationships with each other, and that they continued to make great music. If you liked Pet Sounds, you'll like this CD. It will wow you with its quality (it was the first album the group recorded in true stereophonic sound), and it will woo you into realizing the intense beauty that was still in their work. Take a listen, and let those "Feel Flows" move you wherever they will go. Submitted by Galen (Anchorage, Alaska) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

overlooked Fans of the Beach Boys know all about their car songs, surfing songs, and Good Vibrations. The big time Beach Boys fans know that most of their very best music was the obscure stuff that was largely unnoticed in it's time and hardly made any impact as far as sales or the charts were concerned. Surf's Up did respectable in this respect, but still nothing like their surf/car heyday. For me, their very best work was from Pet Sounds through Holland. It goes to show that lack of gold record awards has nothing to do with quality or musical worthiness, and usually everything to do with fickleness and radio programers. Sunflower bombed in it's day but still stands as one of the Beach Boys very best. This Whole World is a very short track but says so much in the time it's playing. Til I Die is another standout from Surf's Up. Based on it's reputation and greatness, Pet Sounds did eventually go gold and platinum. I can only hope the forgotten recordings ( Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, Friends, 20/20, Sunflower, Surf's Up, Holland ) do the same. Great music should be heard even if it is old. $13.15 Luann is a has been a local favorite in the traditional country music scene in Missouri for over 20 years. Ever since she was a little girl, Luann has been in love with that old country sound, cutting her teeth on the music of Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, and Connie Smith, among others. She taught herself to play guitar and bass, and did a whole lot of 'singin' in the kitchen' (because the accoustics were great!) In a few years, she began her music career playing in a family band at local dances, fairs, and country music shows. After a few years on the circuit, Luann caught a huge break when she was given the last minute opportunity to play bass and sing for lead guitar legend Speedy Haworth (of early KWTO radio in Springfield, MO and also of the famed Ozark Jubilee, the first nationally televised country music show broadcasted across the United States between 1955-60, hosted by country music hall of fame member Red Foley). Speedy was guitarist ...
