Carl and the Passions - So Tough/Holland CDs (2000)
Keepin' the Summer Alive/The Beach Boys '85 CD music This reissue of HOLLAND also includes the limited-edition 7" EP MOUNT VERNON AND FARAWAY that was included with the original LP.
These two albums, criminally underrated in their day (1972-3), make their long-overdue CD debuts in stunningly remastered versions. Even if you think you know this material, you'll still be picking up fresh instrumental and vocal details. Musically, this ranges from the merely charming to the seraphically beautiful, and the amazing thing is that Brian Wilson wrote so little of it and that the individual band members produced. Obviously there was more than enough talent in the band by this time to go around.
High points include "Make it Good" and "Cuddle Up," two stunning orchestral love songs from Dennis Wilson (liner note writer Scott McCaughey accurately compares them to Richard Strauss and Scott Walker); "Marcella," one of the band's all-time best and most infectious rockers; the semi-hit "Sail On Sailor," and Carl Wilson's astonishing "Trader," which begins as a chugging blue-eyed soul number ala "Wild Honey" before switching gears into a haunting piece of minimalism with ravishing group harmonies. As a bonus, this also features the CD debut of Brian's charming little children's fairy tale "Mt. Vernon and Fairway" (originally packaged as a seven-inch bonus EP); it's deliberately slight, but the instrumental snippets that gird it have an undeniable magic.

Smiley Smile/Wild Honey CD (1990)
Keepin' the Summer Alive/The Beach Boys '85 buy CD music SMILEY SMILE was recorded in 1967 as a quick replacement for the unreleased SMILE LP, which had been scrapped at the last minute. SMILEY SMILE contains 5 songs that were to have been included on SMILE: "Good Vibrations," "Heroes & Villains," "Vegetables," "Wonderful" and "Wind Chimes." The versions recorded for SMILEY SMILE are less experimental.
Different versions of "Cabinessence" and "Our Prayer," two more songs from SMILE, were used on the album 20-20, released in 1969. Two other SMILE songs, "Cool, Cool Water" and "Surf's Up," appeared on the albums SUNFLOWER (1970) and SURF'S UP (1971).
Originally released on Brother (T-9001) on September 5, 1967.
Here are two classic Beach Boys albums from 1967 that were critically dismissed in their day but are now rightly considered to be among their best, nicely remastered and fleshed out with bonus tracks. SMILEY SMILE was originally thrown together as a quick replacement for the doomed, unreleased SMILE album, a would-be masterpiece that had been scrapped at the last minute and has since achieved legendary status, the rock equivalent of the missing footage of Von Stroheim's GREED. WILD HONEY, which is in many ways the Beach Boys' soul album, was a deliberate retrenchment, and its stripped-down production anticipated both Dylan's JOHN WESLEY HARDING and the Beatles' WHITE ALBUM. Along with the R&B-influenced title track and "Darlin'" (not to mention a great Carl Wilson-sung cover of Stevie Wonder's "I Was Made To Love Her"), highlights include the great garage rocker "How She Boogalooed It" and the wonderfully breezy and mostly acoustic "I'd Love Just Once To See You" (as in "in the nude"). Pure joy from start to finish.
Their two quirky 1967 albums, together with various sessions and an early take of Good Vibrations ; an alternate take of Heroes and Villains; You're Welcome; Their Hearts Were Full of Spring , and Can't Wait Too Long . 28 tracks!

Beach Boys in Concert CDs (1973) Top Seller
Keepin' the Summer Alive/The Beach Boys '85 songs Recorded live in 1972 & 1973. Includes liner notes by Paul Williams.
This vintage recording of the early-1970s Beach Boys captured live in concert highlights both their extensive songbook and the creditable job they did of reproducing complex studio arrangements live. Augmented by South African musicians Blondie Chaplin (replacing the incapacitated Brian Wilson) and drummer Ricky Fataar (Dennis Wilson had torn a ligament in his hand), the band bridges the artistic gap between its early surfing songs and its later iconic material like "Good Vibrations" and "Heroes and Villains." Its early-'70s opus, HOLLAND, is also well represented by "Sail on Sailor," "Trader," and "Leaving This Town."

Friends/20/20 CD (1990) Top Seller
Keepin' the Summer Alive/The Beach Boys '85 album for sale Utterly ignored at the time of their release, the Beach Boys' final two albums for Capitol Records, 1968's FRIENDS and 1969's 20/20, are now recognized as minor masterpieces. FRIENDS is, in modern terms, the Beach Boys' chill-out album, their first release with none of the R&B-laced rockers preferred by Mike Love. The 12 brief tracks (nearly half of them don't even hit the two-minute mark) are deeply influenced by the group's newfound interest in spirituality, with Dennis Wilson's "Little Bird" and "Be Still" among the peaceful highlights. The two key tracks are "Busy Doin' Nothin'," a peculiar bossa nova with some of Brian Wilson's oddest lyrics, and "Diamond Head," a temporary return to the pictorial soundscapes of SMILE. The more varied 20/20 goes FRIENDS one better by ending with the spine-tingling wordless a cappella exercise "Our Prayer" and the glorious "Cabinessence," two re-recordings of SMILE outtakes. Of the new material, the hit single "Do It Again," the glorious "I Can Hear Music," and Bruce Johnston's instrumental homage to Brian "The Nearest Faraway Place" are the best, and the genuinely spooky "Never Learn Not To Love," Dennis' slightly rewritten cover of "Cease To Exist" by his soon-to-be-infamous buddy Charles Manson, is the most notorious.
Digitally remastered 1998 two-on-one reissue from EMI ofthese classic albums, respectively released for Capitol in1968 & 1969. Features a 24 page booklet with previouslyunreleased photos & extended liner notes, the original coverart of each and a total of 29 cuts, including five bonustracks: 'Break Away', 'Celebrate The News', 'We're TogetherAgain', 'Walk On By' and 'Old Folks At Home/ Ol' Man River'.

Concert/Live in London CD (1990)
Keepin' the Summer Alive/The Beach Boys '85 buy CD music Recorded live at The Civic Auditorium, Sacramento, California on August 1, 1964.
Cleaning up the odds and ends of the Beach Boys' '60s releases, this two-fer CD combines 2 very different recordings, 1964's THE BEACH BOYS CONCERT and 1968's LIVE IN LONDON. On BEACH BOYS CONCERT, what's remarkable is how truly fine the difficult harmonies of songs like "I Get Around" and "In My Room" sound in comparison to the boys' garage-rocking semi-mastery of their instruments; it's amazing how well they were able to recreate that vocal sound on stage.
LIVE IN LONDON is a lower-voltage affair, recorded by the group's late-'60s live lineup (Bruce Johnston subbing for the increasingly reclusive Brian Wilson, who had quit touring by then) with occasional horns and strings on more complex tunes like "God Only Knows" and a stunning a cappella take on Bobby Troup's "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring." The reissue's bonus tracks are a 1964 version of "Don't Worry Baby" that makes plain the song's debt to "Be My Baby," and a good-natured, relaxed version of the crazed semi-operetta "Heroes and Villains" recorded in Hawaii in 1967 with some different sections from the eventual SMILEY SMILE issue.
Two of the group's original hit LPs for Capitol digitally remastered & together on one CD with the original cover art of each, a 24 page booklet with extended liner notes, previously unreleased photos and track-by-track annotations and the bonus tracks 'Don't Worry Baby' and 'Heroes & Villains'. Agrand total of 27 tracks. 1964's 'Concert' stayed at #1 forfour consecutive weeks; 'Live In London' is from 1970. 1990 release.

This two-fer, which compiles two of the band's late-period albums, 1976's 15 BIG ONES and 1977's LOVE YOU, should give both critics and fans much to chew on. While not up to the caliber of milestones like PET SOUNDS and SURF'S UP, both sets contain the hallmarks of the Boys' best material: irresistible melodies, inventive, intricate arrangements, and melting harmonies from heaven.
15 BIG ONES, the album on which Brian Wilson re-teamed with the rest of the band after a hiatus of many years, alternates originals with covers such as "Rock and Roll Music" and "Chapel of Love." As usual, Wilson's compositions outshine the rest, as on the pop carousel of "It's OK" and the delightfully quirky "TM Song." The real treasure, however, is found on LOVE YOU. Though the brilliant studio sheen of classic Beach Boys production is absent here, what remains is an album of honest, original, idiosyncratic pop songs. A trip through Brian Wilson's warped, sunshine-splattered funhouse, LOVE YOU delivers up gems of sweet melancholy like "Let's Put Our Hearts Together" and the ridiculous, amazing "Johnny Carson." Ragged and intimate, LOVE YOU alone makes this disc a must for fans of the band and scholars of alternative pop.
