ElectricLarryland - Your girlfriend won't steal this one
Years ago I heard a song on the radio. I didn't know the name of the song, or the band, but the song was awesome. I spent ages singing the words to store clerks who looked back at me in a kind of baffled way, until some guy told me it was the Butthole surfers, but he didn't know the name of the song, and no, they didn;'t have any albums. So I spent two years trawling CD shops asking puberty-battling clerks for any albums by the Butthole Surfers. Well you can imagine the looks I got. Needless to say, there are NO butthole stockists in South AfFrica. Not knowing the name of the song I was hesitant to order an album on the net. Then I got some inspiration, type the words "I don't mind the sun sometimes" on Google and whooppee. Song name, album name the works. SO I ordered it and got it, in double quick time! Thanks CD Universe, I will use you again!!!
SO not knowing anything about the band, I played Pepper over and over, and it lived up to the image I had built in my mind. What a great song.
So I listened to the rest and found a bit of a mixed bag, but generally good stuff.
Track one is a Sex Pistols type narcotic induced rant, and did not really appeal. Cough is listenable song, with good attributes, but not a highlight on this album for me. Pepper is awesome, and had it been the only song on the album that I liked, I still would have been happy. Thermador is a Kravitz-like rock song. Really nice.
Ulcer Breakfast sounds a lot like the Red Hot Chillipeppers featuring Johnny Rotten (of the sex-pistols). Demonstrates the bands ability to cover the genres.
Jingle of a dogs collar has a catchy guitar riff, and is thoughtful and well written. Good song!
TV star is a bit of a lovestruck teenager lament, and the lousiest track. Reminds me of the guys in Something About Mary (the movie) who stand under the streetlights and sing their comments on the plot.
My Brothers wife would have Jerry Springer licking his lips, but it is a top quality Bowie-esque futuristoic sound that I really enjoyed.
Ah-ha is a pleasant middle-of-the-road rocker. Lord is a Monkey is a fairly heavy sound that I would call Underground/grunge. Ends with a bit of over the top guitar, but not a bad offering.
Talk about Cars has some classy guitar work in the beginning, and a calm, quiet song. Suits the guys with a fetish for foreign women.
LA is a LOUD celebration. Too much distortion for my liking!
Space - now this is Heavy Metal! Great song, with a slow start and a good build up, it'll have you banging your head.
Overall a satisfactory album with some good highlights. I am impressed by the Butts' ability to adopt various styles and do them well. It is a noisy album, and your Mom/Girlfriend/Wife won't like it, so it is a pretty safe bet that it is not gonna get nicked out your collection. Keep it in the car, and you'll beat the traffic blues!
