Roger Waters constructed The Wall, a narcissistic, double-album rock opera about an emotionally crippled rock star who spits on an audience member daring to cheer during an acoustic song. Given its origins, it's little wonder that The Wall paints such an unsympathetic portrait of the rock star, cleverly named "Pink," who blames everyone -- particularly women -- for his neuroses. Such lyrical and thematic shortcomings may have been forgivable if the album had a killer batch of songs, but Waters took his operatic inclinations to heart, constructing the album as a series of fragments that are held together by larger numbers like "Comfortably Numb" and "Hey You." Generally, the fully developed songs are among the finest of Pink Floyd's later work, but The Wall is primarily a triumph of production: its seamless surface, blending melodic fragments and sound effects, makes the musical shortcomings and questionable lyrics easy to ignore. But if The Wall is examined in depth, it falls apart, since it doesn't offer enough great songs to support its ambition, and its self-serving message and shiny production seem like relics of the late-'70s Me Generation. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
This is Roger Waters's two-disc meditation on the travails of a rock star, whose unhappy life causes him to build a psychological barrier between himself and the rest of the world. Contains the number one hit "Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)" and the concert favorite "Comfortably Numb" (cowritten by David Gilmour). ~ William Ruhlmann
THE WALL was Roger Waters' crowning accomplishment in Pink Floyd. It documented the rise and fall of a rock star (named Pink Floyd), based on Waters' own experiences and the tendencies he'd observed in people around him. By now, the bassist had firm control of the group's direction, working mostly alongside David Gilmour and bringing in producer Bob Ezrin as an outside collaborator. Drummer Nick Mason was barely involved, while keyboardist Rick Wright seemed to be completely out of the picture. Still, THE WALL was a mighty, sprawling affair, featuring 26 songs with vocals--nearly as many as all previous Floyd albums combined.
The story revolves around the fictional Pink Floyd's isolation behind a psychological wall. The wall grows as various parts of his life spin out of control, and he grows incapable of dealing with his neuroses. The album opens by welcoming the unwitting listener to Floyd's show ("In the Flesh?"), then turns back to childhood memories of his father's death in World War II ("Another Brick in the Wall [Part 1]"), his mother's overprotectiveness ("Mother"), and his fascination with and fear of sex ("Young Lust"). By the time "Goodbye Cruel World" closes the first disc, the wall is built and Pink is trapped in the midst of a mental breakdown.
On disc 2, the gentle acoustic phrasings of "Is There Anybody Out There?" and the lilting orcheRolling Stone (12/11/03, p.116) - Ranked #87 in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time" - "...Hypnotic in its indulgence....Rock-star hubris has never been more electrifying..."

3 stars Pink Floyd - The Wall ....Of Eternity
'The Wall' was a good, very much anticipated album when it FIRST came out in the fall, of 1979 if I remember correctly. But, now 28 years later, it's grown a bit stale. I cannot stand when all too many of those album rock stations play the same four tracks of this title over and over. Whenever I hear the lines "We don't need no education" or "Mother do you think they'll drop the bomb", I usually turn the station or put in a CD. However, I probably can stand the album more than I can the movie.

5 stars I still can't top the wall.
The wall is a very clever and open expression from Rodger Waters and David Gilmore's influence makes for a perfect blend of music and thought. For those moments when you have time to listen and serious music is on the menu. So many songs on this recording contain lines that make me feel as if maybe Rodger and I have some things in common. A benchmark on music's history chart that gets better and better with time. It secures a well deserved place in history for one of the most daring and influential bands of all time. Well done Floyd.

5 stars rock is much more than guitars
There are two albums of PF I hear from the first to the last second: Dark Side of the Moon and this one. The Wall shows that rock'n'roll can be a lot more than simple-line accords and distorted guitars - and I love that idea!

4 stars Classic Pink Floyd
This is a "must have" for any Pink Floyd fan. You had the LP, you probably dubbed it to cassette for your car. You know you want the CD! On modern Dolby amplifiers it sounds GREAT.

Of all of the classic-era Pink Floyd albums, Animals is the strangest and darkest, a record that's hard to initially embrace yet winds up yielding as many rewards as its equally nihilistic successor, The Wall. It isn't that Roger Waters dismisses the human race as either pigs, dogs, or sheep, it's that he's constructed an album whose music is as bleak and bitter as that ...

By condensing the sonic explorations of Meddle to actual songs and adding a lush, immaculate production to their trippiest instrumental sections, Pink Floyd inadvertently designed their commercial breakthrough with Dark Side of the Moon. The primary revelation of Dark Side of the Moon is what a little focus does for the band. Roger Waters wrote a series of songs about mundane, everyday details which aren't that impressive by themselves, but when given the sonic backdrop of Floyd's slow, atmospheric soundscapes and carefully placed sound effects, they achieve an emotional resonance. But what gives the album true power is the subtly textured music, which evolves from ponderous, neo-psychedelic art rock to jazz fusion and blues-rock before turning back to psychedelia. It's dense with detail, but leisurely paced, creating its own dark, haunting ...

Pink Floyd: David Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Richard Wright (vocals, keyboards); Roger Waters (vocals, bass instrument); Nick Mason (drums, percussion).
Atom Heart Mother, for all its glories, was an acquired taste, and Pink Floyd wisely decided to trim back its orchestral excesses for its follow-up, Meddle. Opening with a deliberately surging "One of These Days," Meddle spends most of its time with sonic textures and elongated compositions, most notably on its epic closer, "Echoes." If there aren't pop songs in the classic sense (even on the level of the group's contributions to Ummagumma), there is a uniform tone, ranging from the pastoral "A Pillow of Winds" to "Fearless," with its insistent refrain hinting at latter-day Floyd. Pink Floyd were nothing if not masters of texture, and Meddle is one of their greatest excursions into little details, pointing the way to the measured brilliance of Dark Side of the Moon and the entire Roger Waters era. Here, David Gilmour exerts a slightly larger influence, at least based on lead vocals, but it's not all sweetness and light -- even if its lilting rhythms are welcome, "San Tropez" feels out of place with the rest of Meddle. Still, the album is one of the Floyd's most consistent explorations ...

Recording information: Chicago, IL (03/10/1926-09/29/1927); New York, NY (03/10/1926-09/29/1927).
In 1997 the Viennese Document label reissued the first 48 Okeh recordings made during the 1920s by the archetypal "Ma and Pa Vaudeville" blues duo Butterbeans & Susie. Since this came out at a time when Document was stubbornly refusing to employ noise reduction technology, sound quality varies from pretty good to good. Volume two covers the time period between March 1926 and September 1927. Most of these humorous numbers toy around with marital discord, often resorting to violent imagery that might seem startling even if it can be found in most every musical genre from Italian opera to hip-hop. What these songs speak to is the endless play between egos that characterize most human relationships, an interpersonal tug o' war that they manage to send up with a brusque and earthy humor that can and will grow on you. If Jodie "Butterbeans" Edwards' colorfully abusive threats raise a few eyebrows (especially during "Your Folks Will Start Wearing Black"), Susie Hawthorne seems to maintain the upper hand, especially with language like "You're a No 'Count Triflin' Man," "Let the Doorknob Hit You in the Back," "Daddy's Got the Mojo, But I Got the Say-So," and the very precise "Love Me and the World is Mine (Hit Me and the Jail is Yours)." Although most of these recordings were made in New York City, on June 18, 1926 Butterbeans & Susie cut two sides in Chicago; ...

Eastern Colombia, near the Orinoco River and the border with Venezuela, offers its own stunning musical tradition of joropo, which has become more prominent in recent years, although not enough to really register on the world music radar. It seems that might just be a matter of time, however, on the basis of the music on Si Soy Llanero: Joropo Music from the Orinoco Plains, driven by percussively played stringed instruments, especially the harp, cuatro, and bandola. This release offers a compendium of styles within joropo, and it's a thrilling education, especially on pieces like "Los Merecures," which careen along at breakneck pace, demanding huge technical ability from the musicians, or "Seis por Derecho," a style of golpe where the instruments trade off lines, pushing each other further and further, with Carlos Quintero's harp playing absolutely outstanding. Kudos, too, to the rhythm section -- percussion and a bassist who goes beyond underpinning the rhythm to provide astute counter melodies. While the focus is instrumental, there are some songs -- like the melodies, derived from the tradition -- and they do offer a respite from the frenetic musical speed that pervades the rest of the album: "Maria Laya," sung by the lovely Ana Veydo, offers such an example. The ...
