It's been said many times that being difficult to categorize or pigeonhole can be the kiss of death commercially, and no one bears that out more than Phoebe Snow -- a pearl of a singer who never caught on because she simply didn't fit neatly into any one category. Known primarily for her haunting single "Poetry Man," this self-titled classic (which was recorded in 1973 and released on LP in 1974) found the earthy vocalist drawing on everything from folk and pop to soul, jazz, and blues. If anyone has bridged the gap between Joni Mitchell and Aretha Franklin, it's Snow, who is as confident on the soul-influenced "Good Times" as she is on the introspective jazz offering "Harpo's Blues." In fact, many of the players backing Snow are jazzmen, including cool jazz great Zoot Sims (tenor sax) and piano legend Teddy Wilson. With as many risks as she takes, the album is generally quite accessible. ~ Alex Henderson Phoebe Snow Music | List Price | $8.94 (You save $0.09) | | Category | Rock Albums, Pop CDs, Folk, Rock/Pop, Singer/Songwriter | | Label | The Right Stuff | | Orig Year | 1974 | | All Time Sales Rank | 6556 | | CD Universe Part number | 1108198 | | Catalog number | 31972 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Jul 03, 1995 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Dino Airali; Phil Ramone | | Engineer | Phil Ramone | | Recording Time | 39 minutes | | Personnel | Ralph MacDonald - percussion Bob James - organ Hugh McDonald - electric bass Phoebe Snow - vocals, acoustic guitar Steve Burgh - guitar Chuck Israels Margaret Ross - harp Chuck Del'Monico - acoustic bass Steve Mosely - drums

| | Beach Boys Carl And The Passions: So Tough/Holland CDs (1972) Remastered
Phoebe Snow MP3 Album
$13.29 (MP3 Available for Download) 2 LPs on 2 discs: CARL AND THE PASSIONS: SO TOUGH (1972)/HOLLAND (1973). This reissue of HOLLAND also includes the limited-edition 7" EP MOUNT VERNON AND FARAWAY that was included with the original LP. The Beach Boys: Alan Jardine, Mike Love , Ricky Fataar, Carl Wilson, Blondie Chaplin, Dennis Wilson, Brian Wilson . Liner Note Authors: Tom Petty; Elton John; Scott McCaughey. Capitol's 2000 two-fer reissue program of Beach Boys LPs continued apace with 1972's Carl and the Passions - So Tough and 1973's Holland, a pair of albums whose quality, style, and sound fit each other perfectly. After ten years of alternating sun-and-fun with doom-and-gloom, the Beach Boys were in obvious need of a musical recharge during the early '70s; the growing roots rock movement led by the Band and the Grateful Dead provided them with a new direction, and the group re-emerged by 1972 as an earthy, socially aware unit complete with long, scraggly hair (Mike Love's contributions coming from under his chin instead of on top of his head). Carl and the Passions - So Tough salutes American roots music with nods to blues-rock ("You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone," "Here She Comes") and gospel ("He Came Down"). Brian's lone contribution is the solid rocker "Marcella," and Dennis crystallizes his growing mastery of the ballad with the album-closers "Make It Good" and "Cuddle Up." One year later, little had changed -- this despite the relocation of the entire band (and their studio) to the Netherlands for a working holiday (or morale booster). "Steamboat" and "Leaving This Town" are generic mid-tempo rockers, and the Mike Love-Al Jardine collaborative suite known as "California Saga" is irretrievably cloying. Inconsistent contributors Brian and Dennis come through yet again, the former with a pair of comparatively good songs ("Sail On, Sailor," "The Trader") and the latter with another perfect ballad ("Only With You"). Though these two LPs don't suffer from the maudlin production and songwriting that would plague many of the Beach Boys' later albums, Carl and the Passions - So Tough and Holland were distinct disappointments (to fans and critics) after the heights of Sunflower and Surf's Up. [Kudos go to Capitol, who faced a bit of a quandary with the reissue of these albums: they would've fit perfectly on one CD, ...
| | Paul McCartney All The Best CD (1988)
Phoebe Snow music CDs
$13.19 (MP3 Available for Download) 2 LPs on 1 CD. The CD booklet includes lyrics and photos. Technically, All the Best was the first compilation of McCartney's solo material, since Wings Greatest covered songs released under the Wings aegis. Well, there is considerable overlap between the two records -- no less than ten of that album's 12 songs are here, yet only the hard-rocking "Hi Hi Hi" is truly missed -- although the seven new songs do give this album a different character, for better or worse. With the U.S. version of All the Best, which has four different songs than its British counterpart, the balance shifts toward the positive, since it simply boasts a better selection of songs. Yes, "Once Upon a Long Ago," the single offered as bait on the British All the Best, isn't here, but it's not missed since two of the four songs exclusive to the American version are among McCartney's best solo singles ("Junior's ...
