Released in September 1970, BEAUCOUPS OF BLUES was a huge improvement over Ringo Starr's somewhat awkward solo debut, SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY. Though the pure country music on BEAUCOUPS OF BLUES was presumably quite foreign to most Beatles fans in 1970, in hindsight, this is a fine country-rock album. While Ringo's deadpan voice seemed limited when compared to the voices of his fellow Beatles, it is perfectly suited to the simple melodies and down-to-earth lyrical concerns of the rock-oriented country songs he performs on this album.
Backed by top Nashville musicians like pedal steel guitarist Pete Drake, Charlie Daniels, and several members of Elvis Presley's band, Ringo wrings every ounce of emotion out of such compelling country noir narratives as "Love Don't Last Long" and the Vietnam-era heartbreaker "Silent Homecoming." With BEAUCOUPS OF BLUES, Ringo made a raw, real country-rock album that fits alongside anything Gram Parsons and Mike Nesmith were doing at that time. It remains one of Ringo's finest solo albums.

This is a refreshing change for Ringo.
The material was chosen just for him to guarantee a Good vocal perfornance from Ringo.I had the wonderful pleasure of playing Fiddle on this Project along with my Nashville Friends.Wishing Ringo the best....

Ringo Starr singing a plate full of country and western songs. The Nashville session musicians are very good, and Ringo sounds comfortable singing. But the songs aren't that great.

 Another pleasant surprise.
I'm thankful first of all that this one is available now. In the late 70s and early 80s, it was a matter of trying to track down some LP on a Dutch or German EMI affiliate and pay $20 or more. If you drop any preconceived expectations and just enjoy, you will get your $$$ worth. This is not the same type of music you'll hear on the Top-40 targeted "Ringo"(1973) or "Goodnight Vienna"(1974), but then again, it's not meant to be. The Stephen Stills style cover still looks good after almost 3 and a half decades.

For his Atlantic Records debut, Ringo tried to duplicate the critical and commercial success of RINGO and GOODNIGHT VIENNA by drawing on the talents of many of the same guest musicians who were featured on those albums. There are many highlights, including "Cookin' (In The Kitchen of Love)," an upbeat John Lennon song that features a playful Lennon on piano and backing vocals and "I'll Still Love You," a dark, haunting pop song that was written by George Harrison. Other celebrity guests who drop in to help their old pal Ringo include Paul McCartney, who wrote and performed on the ballad "Pure Gold" and Eric Clapton, who wrote and played on the breezy pop rocker "This Be Called A Song." Ringo-shy Beatles fans needn't fear, GOODNIGHT VIENNA is one of Starr's most solid efforts, full of infectious pop ditties that benefit from the bejeweled one's amiable delivery. On a par with the self-titled album that is Ringo's milestone, this one finds him tackling tuneful, light-hearted ditties with the kind of quasi-music hall backing that is the hallmark of the drummer/vocalist's best solo work. Though one of the finest moments is a durable cover of Roger Miller's slippery country classic "Husbands and Wives," Ringo scored major hits with two other VIENNA tunes. "Back Off Boogaloo" is wacky and charming, with an irresistible, semi-martial beat, and the anti-drug "No No Song" (written by Hoyt Axton) is impossible not to sing along with.

Neither Rod Stewart nor producer Clive Davis have ever been accused of letting any moss grow around them, so when Stewart's first collection of tunes from the Great American Songbook turned out to be a smash, they followed it up with a sequel, and, eventually, with a third volume. As with the preceding albums, STARDUST finds Stewart tackling the cream of the crop of classic pop standards, songs that will be instantly familiar to followers of Bennett, Sinatra, et al. but which may conceivably be new to some of Rod's more rock-oriented fans.
