(2 Customer Reviews)
Leon Russell's third album marked a change in direction. His first two releases were a sort of high-spirited revue, with numerous players and gospel-influenced backup singers. Where his self-titled debut and its follow-up (AND THE SHELTER PEOPLE) wedded blues, r&b, rock & roll, country and other genres, CARNEY is a pared-down setting of equally well-endowed songs that make their mark in a much quieter manner. Russell's first two albums had been veritable celebrations, but CARNEY sounds more introspective. Some of Russell's most loved songs made their first appearance here, including the often-covered "Tight Rope" and "This Masquerade." Russell stayed introspective on his subsequent release WILL O' THE WISP, but CARNEY remains one of his very finest efforts. The gorgeous songs and subtle arrangements make for a wonderfully sustained album experience.
Personnel: Leon Russell (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards); Joey Cooper, Don Preston (vocals, guitar); John Gallie (keyboards); Chuck Blackwell (drums).
Unknown Contributor Role: Leon Russell.

Carney album
$8.85 Principally recorded at Olympic Sound, London, England from September to October 1969.
Leon Russell's 1970 self-titled debut appeared when he was 30 years old and a veteran of countless sessions--as player, arranger, producer, and writer.
Opening with the gorgeous and frequently covered ballad, "A Song for You," he then jumps into a stew of New Orleans, gospel, bluesy rock & roll. The songs were all written or co-written by Russell (with the exception of the CD's bonus track, Bob Dylan's "Master of War"). This mix of music, all held together by Russell's drawled and friendly vocals, would prove successful for his follow-up album (AND THE SHELTER PEOPLE), and for his role as bandleader for Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour. Deservedly, this album has remained of the most enduring in Leon Russell's fine catalog.

| | Leon Russell Asylum Choir II CD (1971)
Carney CD music
$8.99 Digitally remastered by Tom Baker (Future Disc Systems, Hollywood, California).
Of all Russell's early work as an artist, this record is perhaps the least essential; in particular, songs like "Tryin' to Stay Live" and "When You Wish Upon a Fag" feel dated. Nevertheless, Asylum Choir II is still a pretty nice record. Especially noteworthy is Russell's own version of "Hello, Little Friend"; Joe Cocker would later record the definitive version of the song. (The 1995 CD reissue features five bonus tracks). ~ Jim Worbois

| | Leon Russell & The Shelter People CD (1971)
Carney music CDs
$8.85 Leon Russell's second album, LEON RUSSELL & THE SHELTER PEOPLE, has the feel of a rollicking road show. In fact, many of the players who appear here had been out on the road under Russell's direction as Joe Cocker's backing band, Mad Dogs & Englishmen (a fact chronicled on this album in "The Ballad of Mad Dogs and Englishmen"). The original album was made up of eight Russell originals, two Bob Dylan covers, and a song by George Harrison (an incredible version of "Beware of Darkness"). This CD reissue has been extended to include three ...
| | Leon Russell Hank Wilson's Back! CD (1973)
Carney songs
$8.85 Leon Russell knows something about country music. Born in Oklahoma, virtually all of the country and blues made their way through Tulsa along with Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys. And while Russell is known primarily as a rock & roll performer, that doesn't mean jack. The 14 songs here offer a glimpse of where Russell's heart really lies. All classic country and bluegrass tunes, Hank Wilson's Back features Russell and a few dozen of his closest friends from both L.A. and Nashville tearing up the classics. With everyone from Melba Montgomery, Billy Byrd, Johnny Gimble, Bob Moore, Weldon Myrick, and Pete Drake to Carl Radle, David Briggs, Charlie McCoy, and fellow Okie J.J. Cale, Russell in his alter ego runs through standards such as Lester Flatt's "Rollin' in My Sweet Baby's Arms," Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and "Jambalaya," Bill Monroe's "Uncle Pen," Hank Thompson's "Six Pack to Go," Leon Payne's "Lost Highway," George Jones' "The Window up Above," Jimmie Driftwood's "The Battle of New Orleans," and as a closer, Leadbelly's "Goodnight Irene". This is no idle affair. Russell's reads of these classic songs from the country and bluegrass canon are played with fire, verve, and reverence, and he uses every trick in the book to get at the bottom of their meaning, allowing his voice to do things it never did before or since this recording. The playing is well rehearsed and ...

| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Carney CD music
$6.19 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely ...
| | Lee Ritenour Larry & Lee CD (1995)
Carney music CDs
$10.95 LARRY & LEE was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Performance.
Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour have had parallel careers, but this CD is their first joint meeting on record. The two guitarists complement each other well and there are hints of Wes Montgomery along with a tribute to Joe Pass ("Remembering J.P."), but the songs (all of them their originals) are little more than rhythmic grooves most of the time with the usual fadeouts. The consistently lightweight music is reasonably pleasing but never too stimulating. ~ Scott Yanow
