All meat, no filler, this is good-time blue-eyed soul at its finest. Fans wanting a more substantial selection should try Rhino's 1991 two-disc set ANTHOLOGY.
Unlike many of the single-disc Johnny Rivers anthologies available, the Capitol edition of GREATEST HITS includes the original singles from Rivers's tenure at Liberty Records and his own imprint, Soul City. This 10-track compilation is a concise summation of his '60s hits, although '70s singles like "Slow Dancin' (Swayin' to the Music)" are, unfortunately, not included.
Personnel: Johnny Rivers (vocals, guitar).

Guided, perhaps, by musical snobbery or roots-rock phobia, some people inexplicably don't like Creedence Clearwater Revival. As the kings of earnest country-inflected rock in an age when radical stances were de rigueur, CCR sported straight-ahead tunes, and may have seemed a bit unhip. But their music stands the test of time with a vengeance. For the doubtful listener, this outstanding, 20-track hits collection has evidence of their greatness in staggering ...

| | Beatles 1962-1966 (Red Album) CDs (1973) Red
Greatest Hits songs
$29.05 This superb compilation, often called "the red album," brings together the majority of the Beatles' hits from the early to mid '60s. Consequently, it plays like an overview of the some of the most popular and indelible rock songs of all time. From the "yeah, yeah, yeah"'s of "She Loves You" through the amped-up giddiness of "I Want to Hold Your Hand," the minor-key melodicism of "And I Love Her," and on to the chiming power pop of "Eight Days a Week" and the tweaky feedback of "I Feel Fine," these are the songs that turned the entire Western world on its ear.
The second half of the set--in addition to its phenomenal songs-- is interesting in that it charts the Beatles' move from straightforward pop toward the new chapter of rock the band would help script in the ...
| | Pure 60'S: The #1 Hits CD (2002)
Greatest Hits album
$11.99 This compilation is just what it says: number one hits on the American charts from the 1960s. It has a leg up on some similar anthologies, though, by virtue of its sheer quantity: 26 songs spanning the entire decade, which is pretty good value for a single CD. While it's true the selection is a little arbitrary, on the whole it's really good, and whether you care about chart statistics or not, it's an excellent disc if you're looking for an all-purpose collection of 1960s pop/rock classics. There are many core classics here, spanning rock, soul, pop, and the British Invasion: the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations," Del Shannon's "Runaway," the Marvelettes' "Please Mr. Postman," Martha & the Vandellas' "(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave," Manfred Mann's "Do Wah Diddy Diddy," the Mamas & the Papas' "Monday, Monday," the Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer ...
| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Greatest Hits CD music
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only now, they've become his daughter's treasures, as well. It's an affirming story, but that's all it would be if Cash didn't sing her heart out here. The opener, a version of Jimmie Rodgers' "Miss the Mississippi and You," is full of comfortable grace and sentiment, and Cash keeps that fine emotional tone throughout ...

| | 25 All-Time Novelty Hits CD (2002)
Greatest Hits songs
$14.45 These 25 tracks were all hits between 1955 and 1977, so it might not be quite accurate to dub them "all-time novelty hits." Still, that's the time span that most people who buy such compilations are going to want to zero in on, so what's the harm in the chronological limits? It can be taken for granted that a novelty compilation is going to have a lot of frivolous material and might be too much of a good thing all at once if you're not in a certain mood. But this is a pretty good assortment of cuts, usually with a strong or at least tenuous rock base, ranging from familiar classic smashes to some items that are seldom anthologized or played on oldies radio. Among the best familiar tunes are the Olympics' Coasters-like "Western Movies," Bill Parsons' Elvis Presley satire "The All-American Boy" (actually sung by future country star Bobby Bare), Jan & Dean's "Baby Talk," Johnny Bond's "Hot Rod Lincoln," and the Trashmen's "Surfin' Bird." Among the most frivolous? Certainly Dickey Doo & the Don'ts' "Nee Nee Na Na Na Na Nu Nu" has marks to spare for qualification, as do Bob McFadden & Dor's "The Mummy" (written by Rod McKuen!), the Ran-Dells' outer-space doo wop takeoff "Martian Hop," the Pipkins' "Gimme Dat Ding," and Napoleon XIV's apocalyptic "They're Coming to Take Me Away Ha-Haaa!" As for the seldom-heard items, there's ...
