Taken from the years 1956-61, the 20 tracks on this well-annotated budget compilation serve as an excellent introduction to this incendiary and highly influential artist. A true Nashville pioneer, Wanda Jackson was a crossover giant long before the term came into vogue, combining the heartbreaking country classicism of Patsy Cline with the sexy, devil-may-care menace of Elvis--the latter most notably on the rip-snorting "Let's Have A Party" and the otherworldly "Hot Dog! That Made Him Mad."
Blessed with talent, extraordinary good looks and a broad musical palate, Jackson embraced country, pop ballads, rock & roll and rockabilly with equal flair and conviction. Unfortunately, such an eclectic stance didn't score many points with music biz bigwigs in those days, and radio programmers never knew quite what to make of her. Discouraged by the situation, Jackson turned her focus strictly to country, but this quintessential rockabilly kitten had effectively been de-clawed and was never again to regain the amazing artistic edginess to which this simply stunning set serves as testament.

$13.79 Carl Smith's legacy and reputation is built on the hardcore honky tonk he cut for Columbia in the '50s, which ranks among the purest and best of its era. Since the dawn of the CD reissue boom in the '80s, that has been the Carl Smith music that's been reissued, first on Columbia/Legacy's excellent The Essential Carl Smith (1950-1956) then on Bear Family's fine 1996 five-disc box set Satisfaction Guaranteed, which contained the entirety of his '50s recordings. So much emphasis was placed on this era that listeners who came to Smith late may have thought he didn't record or didn't have success in the '60s, when the opposite is true. He continued recording for Columbia in the '60s, and while he rarely broke the country Top Ten, he placed ...

$2.82 Originally released on Capitol (1384). Includes liner notes by Holly George-Warren.
While 1958's WANDA JACKSON and 1959's THERE'S A PARTY GOIN' ON were albums of new material that explored the country and pop sides of Wanda Jackson, 1960's ROCKIN' WITH WANDA is a bracing collection of the first four years' worth of singles by the rockabilly spitfire. Classic rockabilly sides like the lascivious "Fujiyama Mama" and the whooping "Hot Dog! That Made Him Mad" are among the finest examples of the style -- male or female -- ever recorded, and even less well known cuts like "Baby Loves Him" and "Dona'a Wan'a" are a hoot. This is the essential Wanda Jackson document.

$16.09 The tangled history of this compilation, as explained briefly in the liner notes to the 2008 reissue, lies in a plan by the Crepescule label in the early '80s to have a collection of tracks by its artists and kindred spirits covering a variety of songs written for and/or made famous through their movie appearances, with Blaine Reininger serving as overall producer. The result would have been a cross between a tribute album and something like This Mortal Coil, perhaps, but the version that finally surfaced in 1991 was a mix of tracks from a variety of sessions and artists. The 2008 reissue readjusts this slightly, with the original contributions (minus cuts by Cabaret Voltaire and Ennio Morricone) complemented by other contemporaneous covers, resulting in a enjoyable, often breezily sweet listen that both celebrates and in other ways completely undercuts or reworks the original takes. One example of the latter comes from the Pale Fountains, who turn the John Barry-written ...
