| Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) What is there to say? YOU NEED THIS! I don't care if you're a Beach Boys fan or not, or if you like "I Get Around" better than "Heroes and Villains"; you need to hear the music on this set. First up - a never-before-heard stereo mix of "Pet Sounds" created especially for this box. BEAUTIFUL! It really opens up the tracks and lets us hear the marvelous studio musicians. But if you REALLY want to hear them, listen to the session tapes and full backing tracks for each song that follows. You get to hear how the songs progress (though so much of them are already in Brian Wilson's head as he's recording). Then there are the vocal sessions - not as enlightening, because there are few rehearsals or mistakes, but clean, and clear, and presented without the music except where long instrumental passages take time. There are a bunch of entertaining alternate versions, and then - on an extra disc - the original mono mix of the album. TWO detailed booklets provide excellent documentation. A superb packaging of one of the great albums in the rock era. Get this while it's still available. Submitted by markz (Plano, TX, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Be sure to back a lunch I've owned this boxset since its release, and felt compelled to submit a review some ten years later on, as I happen to be listening to it (again) now. In short, this is definately a students' "only" paradise; unless you truly find the album out of this world, &/or, are intriqued by recording technique(s), the expansive mass of (mainly) superflous variations on the development of what many consider one of the greatest albums ever made, could drive the uniniated to arguable insanity. That said, if you're willing to take on the task, the (box)set clearly reinforces why so many people have said so many wonderful things about this marvel of a record. It really is a masterpiece, and I'm far from your run of the mill Beach Boys fan.
