Pink Floyd: David Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Richard Wright (vocals, keyboards); Roger Waters (vocals, bass instrument); Nick Mason (drums, percussion). Atom Heart Mother, for all its glories, was an acquired taste, and Pink Floyd wisely decided to trim back its orchestral excesses for its follow-up, Meddle. Opening with a deliberately surging "One of These Days," Meddle spends most of its time with sonic textures and elongated compositions, most notably on its epic closer, "Echoes." If there aren't pop songs in the classic sense (even on the level of the group's contributions to Ummagumma), there is a uniform tone, ranging from the pastoral "A Pillow of Winds" to "Fearless," with its insistent refrain hinting at latter-day Floyd. Pink Floyd were nothing if not masters of texture, and Meddle is one of their greatest excursions into little details, pointing the way to the measured brilliance of Dark Side of the Moon and the entire Roger Waters era. Here, David Gilmour exerts a slightly larger influence, at least based on lead vocals, but it's not all sweetness and light -- even if its lilting rhythms are welcome, "San Tropez" feels out of place with the rest of Meddle. Still, the album is one of the Floyd's most consistent explorations of mood, especially from their time at Harvest, and it stands as the strongest record they released between Syd's departure and Dark Side. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine MEDDLE was the first album to hint at the musical identity that would define Pink Floyd in the mid- to late-'70s. Whereas prior releases like UMMAGUMMA and ATOM HEART MOTHER announced the presence of new singer/guitarist/songwriter David Gilmour, MEDDLE represents the band's Gilmour-influenced evolution toward a sleek, epic, spacey sound. In "Echoes," an ambitious 23-minute soundscape, the pinging of a synthesizer greets the listener before Gilmour's warm, open guitar and gentle crooning gives way to a repetitious, workmanlike rhythm. From here, the music fades into an abyss of whale calls and eerie sonic reverberations. Elsewhere, Floyd dabbles with straightforward cocktail-hour jazz ("San Tropez") and a twisted slow blues ("Seamus"). But it is "One of These Days," MEDDLE's opening track and lone radio staple, that truly previews things to come. Roger Waters's bass, played through a Binson echo unit, establishes the song's manically hypnotic groove, as Richard Wright's synthesizer bursts in and out, Nick Mason's off-kilter drum fills get tossed around, and Gilmour's guitar dive-bombs through it all. These varied sound effects, packaged in a song that clocked in at less than six minutes, were a precedent for the masterpiece that was two years away: DARK SIDE OF THE MOON.Rolling Stone (1/6/72, p.70) - "...not only confirms lead guitarist David Gilmour's emergence as a real shaping force with the group, it states forcefully and accurately that the group is well into the growth track again..." Q (10/94, p.137) - 3 Stars - Good - "...The four were at their most collectively prolific at this time..." Meddle Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Best "early" Mr Floyd Barrett's gone and we haven't gotten into Waters' Cynicism yet. So we get to hear an extended David Gilmour. Gilmour's guitar work is just a precursor of things to come. I could listen to Gilmour and Mr. Floyd all day. The echoes will always live on... Many people argue that "Dark side of the Moon" was THE album of the 20th century and showed Pink Floyd at their zenith. This may be true for the majority of the population, but "Meddle" is the artistically superior album. "One of these Days" has some of the finest bass and slide guitar work you'll ever hear - and listen out for the Dr Who melody in the background; it's a very clever touch! And then there's "Echoes" which is the most ethereal and melodic track ever recorded (well, arguably). "Echoes" comes in at over 23 minutes (it was side 2 of the "Meddle" LP) and takes the listener on a musical journey, with lyrics that talk of the human condition and music that sends chills down one's spine. "Meddle" is THE Pink floyd album.....great rock with layers of abstract creativity and conceptual detail. It's sheer artisitic talent being used at its very best. Future Echo Pink Floyd's best pre-"Dark Side" album presented a prescient precursor to all the recorded output that followed, defining the Floyd's adeptness at numerous musical genres and sonic innovation. "One Of These Days" opens the proceedings, a manic, pulsing "freak out" instrumental that features Nick Mason's distorted vocal line before climaxing in howling wind; "A Pillow Of Winds" is a gentle acoustic piece, much needed after its predecessor; "Fearless" a country-tinged tune whose homage to Syd Barrett is underscored by the KOP chorus' intonation of "You'll Never Walk Alone"; "San Tropez" a cocktail lounge jazzy ballad and "Seamus" a jokey blues which is a wickedly humorous manner in which to close side one. The centerpiece, of course, is the near 24 minute "Echoes" which includes a breath-defying use of sonics and synthesizer madness. I never tire of hearing that epic. "Meddle" is, of course, where David Gilmour really develops as a talented musician (those seagull and whale cries on "Echoes" is amazing) and the LP provides some hints at what was to follow from "Dark Side" to "The Division Bell". This is an excellent starting point to delve into the Pink Floyd realm. Submitted by Will-T (Lawrenceburg IN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great Album! it's so long! but it is worth the whole time! even though echoes is so long it is so beautiful, great song! it's worth the money you spend on the album! not a good album for starters though...too instrumental.. Submitted by jlwhitedove (Iowa,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
One of their best! Along with "Dark side of the moon" and "Wish you were here", and maybe "The wall" and "Animals" for some fans this is Pink Floyd at their best. "Echoes" is probably one of their best songs ever alongside stuff like "Shine on...", "Wish you were here" and "High hopes". Check out the DVD " Live at Pompeii", i`ts great and it`s from the same period as this record. Submitted by Anders (Sweden) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Meddle
$12.59 Pink Floyd: David Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Richard Wright (vocals, keyboards); Roger Waters (vocals, bass instrument); Nick Mason (percussion). Additional personnel: Clare Torry (vocals); Dick Parry (saxophone); Doris Troy, Lesley Duncan, Liza Strike, Barry St. John (background vocals). By condensing the sonic explorations of Meddle to actual songs and adding a lush, immaculate production to their trippiest instrumental sections, Pink Floyd inadvertently designed their commercial breakthrough with Dark Side of the Moon. The primary revelation of Dark Side of the Moon is what a little focus does for the band. Roger Waters wrote a series of songs about mundane, everyday details which aren't ...
| | Pink Floyd Atom Heart Mother CD (1970)
Meddle
$13.69 ATOM HEART MOTHER is a collaboration between Pink Floyd and avant-garde composer Ron Geesin. Pink Floyd: David Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Roger Waters (vocals, bass instrument); Richard Wright (keyboards); Nick Mason (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: John Aldis Choir (background vocals). Appearing after the sprawling, unfocused double-album set Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother may boast more focus, even a concept, yet that doesn't mean it's more accessible. If anything, this is the most impenetrable album Pink Floyd released while on Harvest, which also makes it one of the most interesting of the era. Still, it may be an acquired taste even for fans, especially since it kicks off with a side-long, 23-minute extended orchestral piece that may not seem ...

Meddle
$12.29 Pink Floyd: Syd Barrett, David Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Roger Waters (vocals, bass); Richard Wright (keyboards); Nick Mason (drums). Recorded at EMI Studios, London, England. A transitional album on which the band moved from Syd Barrett's relatively concise and vivid songs to spacy, ethereal material with lengthy instrumental passages. Barrett's influence is still felt (he actually did manage to contribute one track, the jovial "Jugband Blues"), and much of the material retains ...

Personnel: Katie Melua (vocals, guitar); Chris Spedding, Jim Cregan (guitar); Mike Batt (piano, organ); Tim Harries (bass instrument); Henry Spinetti, Michael Kruk (drums). English listeners went mad for Katie Melua with the release of her debut album in late 2003. Issued domestically in June 2004, Call Off the Search posits the lovely Melua pristinely in between pop, adult contemporary, and traditional American musical forms, with savvy marketing handling the finishing touches. (Think Norah Jones.) It's a comfortable, lightly melodic affair that drinks red wine safely in the middle of the road. Raised in Soviet Georgia and the United Kingdom, Melua has a beguiling accent that colors the ends of her phrases, adding character to her velvety, if occasionally only satisfactory singing voice. She has a nice time with the understated R&B sashay of John Mayall's "Crawling Up a Hill," as well as Mike Batt's "My Aphrodisiac Is You," which is spiced up with barrelhouse piano, muted trumpet, and sly references to opium and the Kama Sutra. The singer's own "Belfast (Penguins and Cats)" opens nicely with a few measures of solo acoustic ...
