Recorded in between a cup of tea and a cigarette, this album is raw yet dazzling. Here were four lads, highly experienced on stage, but with little or no idea of what a recording studio was like. They were subtly marshalled by the much-respected George Martin to deliver an entire album that was exactly what the fans wanted, but was still a surprise. Things were never as simple as this again, yet the genius is there. Examples are Lennon's unmatchable rasping on "Twist And Shout," McCartney's graceful ease in singing "I Saw Her Standing There," Harrison's sparse but definite Gretsch chords, and Starr's ace vocal on "Boys."
Includes liner notes by Tony Barrow.
Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, England. "Love Me Do" and "P.S. I Love You" were recorded in September 1962. The other 12 tracks were recorded on February 11, 1963 ("Twist And Shout" was the last song to be recorded).
The Beatles: George Harrison (vocals, guitar); John Lennon (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Paul McCartney (vocals, bass); Ringo Starr (vocals, drums).
Rolling Stone (12/11/03, p.108) - Ranked #39 in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time" - "...For productivity alone, it is one of the greatest first albums in rock..." Paste (magazine) (p.58) - "It's difficult to put into words just how new and exotic these songs sounded in early 1963..." Please Please Me Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews This brings me back I have been a Beatles fan for as long as I can remember. My mom and I used to listen to this tape on my way to and from school almost everyday. I am so glad that I found it on CD. If you don't rate this as a 5, please seek professional help! The birth of *BEATLEMANIA*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On the strength of this album's title track, this album skyrocketed to the top of everybody's wish list and kick-started a legendary career by four teenagers from the Liverpool area. On this album, they were still simple rock-and-rollers, but they injected a teenage enthusiasm to tackle anything and everything into the music, which helped make it popular with the teenage audience. Now, just because of its popularity is not a reason to try and discredit it. To put it simply, this album flat out rocks, laying the blueprint for the "British Invasion", as it was called, and putting a new and powerful energy back into rock and roll. One of the best tracks on here, "I Saw Her Standing There", is a prime example of this, and it continues to leap out of my headphones each time I play it. This album is great. If you're a fan of the Beatle's psychedelic stuff, you have no idea what you're missing on this disc. Buy it and see. Submitted by Galen (Anchorage, AK, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The World's Greatest Phenomenon After 6 years of changing both the name of their band and their musicians, The Beatles finally sustained a record deal with Parlophone and made their first album. Though the lyrics aren't as good as the band's later work, "I Saw Her Standing There" is ultimately the defintive rock song. Submitted by lucasmadigan (Atlanta, GA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? | | Beatles For Sale CD (1964)
Please Please Me CD music
$15.65 It was inevitable that the constant grind of touring, writing, promoting, and recording would grate on the Beatles, but the weariness of Beatles for Sale comes as something of a shock. Only five months before, the group released the joyous A Hard Day's Night. Now, they sound beaten, worn, and, in Lennon's case, bitter and self-loathing. His opening trilogy ("No Reply," "I'm a Loser," "Baby's in Black") is the darkest sequence on any Beatles record, setting the tone for the album. Moments of joy pop up now and again, mainly in the forms of covers and the dynamic "Eight Days a Week," but the very presence of six covers after the triumphant all-original A Hard Day's Night feels like an admission of defeat or at least a regression. (It doesn't help that Lennon's cover of his beloved obscurity "Mr. Moonlight" winds up as arguably the worst thing the group ever recorded.) Beneath those surface suspicions, however, there are some important changes on Beatles for Sale, most notably Lennon's discovery of Bob Dylan and folk-rock. The opening three songs, along with "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party," are ...

| | Beatles Rubber Soul CD (1965)
Please Please Me songs
$15.65 Though some might argue that the Beatles' unprecedented evolution from British Invasion pin-ups to pop music visionaries began with BEATLES FOR SALE, RUBBER SOUL is without a doubt the first album to definitively put the Fab Four in the running for Greatest Band Ever. Virtually every aspect of the Liverpool quartet's incredibly diverse sound is in evidence here: ...
| | Beatles Magical Mystery Tour CD (1967)
Please Please Me album
$15.65 The first six songs on MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR were the soundtrack to the Beatles' TV movie of the same name. The film was an experimental mess, but the experimental pop of the album included some of their most memorable productions. The soundtrack side was dominated by Paul McCartney pop tunes, including the bittersweet piano ballad "Fool On The Hill" and "Your Mother Should Know," an impossibly catchy bit of Vaudevillian pop. But it also featured George Harrison's mystical "Blue Jay Way" (about his house in Hollywood) and John Lennon's "I Am The Walrus," which wedded a stream-of-consciousness lyric to a fierce drum beat, layers of strings, odd voices and some dialogue from Shakespeare's "King Lear."
McCartney's "Hello Goodbye," which led off the assorted singles, featured some neatly arranged contrapuntal vocals, and may well have been about the dissolving partnerships (songwriting and ...
