The Beatles: John Lennon (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica, Hammond organ, tambourine); George Harrison (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Paul McCartney (vocals, piano, electric bass, claves); Ringo Starr (vocals, drums, bongos, maracas). Additional personnel: George Martin (piano). Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, England from July to October 1963. Includes liner notes by Tony Barrow. With the Beatles is a sequel of the highest order -- one that betters the original by developing its own tone and adding depth. While it may share several similarities with its predecessor -- there is an equal ratio of covers-to-originals, a familiar blend of girl group, Motown, R&B, pop, and rock, and a show tune that interrupts the flow of the album -- With the Beatles is a better record that not only rocks harder, it's considerably more sophisticated. They could deliver rock & roll straight ("I Wanna Be Your Man") or twist it around with a little Latin lilt ("Little Child," one of their most underrated early rockers); Lennon and McCartney wrote sweet ballads (the achingly gorgeous "All I've Got to Do") and sprightly pop/rockers ("All My Loving") with equal aplomb; and the propulsive rockers ("It Won't Be Long") were as richly melodic as slower songs ("Not a Second Time"). Even George Harrison's first recorded song, "Don't Bother Me," is a standout, with its wonderfully foreboding minor-key melody. Since the Beatles covered so much ground with their originals, their covers pale slightly in comparison, particularly since they rely on familiar hits (only "Devil in Her Heart" qualifies as a forgotten gem). But for every "Roll Over Beethoven," a surprisingly stiff reading of the Chuck Berry standard, there is a sublime moment, such as Lennon's soaring interpretation of "You Really Got a Hold on Me," and the group always turns in thoroughly enjoyable performances. Still, the heart of With the Beatles lies not in the covers, but the originals, where it was clear that, even at this early stage, the Beatles were rapidly maturing and changing, turning into expert craftsmen and musical innovators. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine This is the one that turned the world upside-down. Released as its creators evolved from pop group to phenomenon, WITH THE BEATLES both affirmed promise and proclaimed genius. A slew of memorable Lennon/McCartney compositions embraced pop at its most multi-faceted, robust, melancholic, excited, and wistful. Their grasp of melody and harmony startled, yet for every unusual chord sequence employed, the Beatles' vigor and sense of purpose remained true. Influences and mentors were acknowledged by a handful of cover versions, but the strength of the album lies in the group's own creations. WITH THE BEATLES freed artists to record their own material, and the course of pop was irrevocably changed.Paste (magazine) (p.58) - "[T]his album is almost as strong as the band's debut....[With] smart cover choices..." The genesis of "A Hard Day's Night" While this album continues the formula for "Please Please Me", by combining some original compositions with covers of other songs, this is the album where the covers were lesser songs than the originals. And this includes such chestnuts as "Roll Over Beethoven", a very popular song with early rock-and-roll fans. Here, the Beatles showed that they made their own songs, and they could make their own stuff better than they could make somebody else's stuff. Indeed, it changed the course of pop music, but it was a breath of fresh air that led to the creative explosion of the sixties, and the rest, as they say, is history. People sometimes slash at these early albums, claiming that they weren't musically or artistically good, but this was ground-breaking stuff back when it was released. People needed to see what they could do with the genre of rock, and these "Beatlemania" albums were the genesis of that. All part of the historical build-up to "Sgt. Pepper" and the cultural "Summer Of Love", as the latter part of the decade was called. Without these early steps, that artistic flowering would not have happened. If you like rock, you might want to pay respects to its origins by buying this album. You might like it. Submitted by Galen (Anchorage, AK, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN.... MASTERPIECE!!!! Submitted by najponk (Prague) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
There was a reason for Beatlemania Considering how huge and influential the Beatles would become in the next few years, this album from 1963 cannot be dismissed. Here they are not as the superstars they would become, but as four very talented young British musicians and you can hear that they are a force to be reckoned with. Not a "boy band" by any means, they were devoted students of the early rock 'n roll giants, while keeping in tune with the changing times and reflected these influences in their finely-crafted songwriting.
Flashes of brilliance for McCartney in "All My Lovin" and "Til There Was You", while Lennon's "All I've Got to Do" and especially "Not A Second Time" are hauntingly beautiful. Harrison's lead vocals on "Devil in Her Heart" make it an overlooked classic. The Beatles earned their success, it wasn't handed to them. Submitted by gcord657 (Los Angeles) Was This Review Helpful? $14.39 The Beatles: John Lennon (vocals, guitar, electric piano); Paul McCartney (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass); George Harrison (vocals, guitar); Ringo Starr (vocals, drums). Additional personnel: George Martin (piano). Considering that Help! functions as the Beatles' fifth album and as the soundtrack to their second film -- while filming, they continued to release non-LP singles on a regular basis -- it's not entirely surprising that it still has some of the weariness ...

Additional personnel: George Martin (piano); Mal Evans (organ). While the Beatles still largely stuck to love songs on Rubber Soul, the lyrics represented a quantum leap in terms of thoughtfulness, maturity, and complex ambiguities. Musically, too, it was a substantial leap forward, with intricate folk-rock arrangements ...

It's a double-album (on vinyl) compilation of previously released material and outtakes ...
