Argentine edition With Revolver, the Beatles made the Great Leap Forward, reaching a previously unheard-of level of sophistication and fearless experimentation. Sgt. Pepper, in many ways, refines that breakthrough, as the Beatles consciously synthesized such disparate influences as psychedelia, art-song, classical music, rock & roll, and music hall, often in the course of one song. Not once does the diversity seem forced -- the genius of the record is how the vaudevillian "When I'm 64" seems like a logical extension of "Within You Without You" and how it provides a gateway to the chiming guitars of "Lovely Rita." There's no discounting the individual contributions of each member or their producer, George Martin, but the preponderance of whimsy and self-conscious art gives the impression that Paul McCartney is the leader of the Lonely Hearts Club Band. He dominates the album in terms of compositions, setting the tone for the album with his unabashed melodicism and deviously clever arrangements. In comparison, Lennon's contributions seem fewer, and a couple of them are a little slight but his major statements are stunning. "With a Little Help From My Friends" is the ideal Ringo tune, a rolling, friendly pop song that hides genuine Lennon anguish, à la "Help!"; "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" remains one of the touchstones of British psychedelia; and he's the mastermind behind the bulk of "A Day in the Life," a haunting number that skillfully blends Lennon's verse and chorus with McCartney's bridge. It's possible to argue that there are better Beatles albums, yet no album is as historically important as this. After Sgt. Pepper, there were no rules to follow -- rock and pop bands could try anything, for better or worse. Ironically, few tried to achieve the sweeping, all-encompassing embrace of music as the Beatles did here. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine One of the most famous and influential albums ever recorded, SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND had a huge impact on the music world, signaling the beginning of a new era of sophistication and maturity in rock. The musical experimentation was dynamic and fresh, several tracks were edited to create seamless transitions, and even the visual design was more elaborate than anything previously attempted. Producer George Martin and The Beatles searched for new sounds and studio effects. They added crowd sounds and animal cries from sound-effects recordings, sped up Paul McCartney's vocals in "When I'm Sixty-Four" (to make him sound younger), and sustained a single pianRolling Stone (12/11/03, p.85) - Ranked #1 in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time" - "...The most important rock & roll album ever made, an unsurpassed adventure in concept, sound, songwriting, cover art and studio technology..." THERE IS NOT ENOUGH WORDS TO DESCIBE THE INFLUENCE THIS ALBUM FROM 1967 CAUSED. 40 YEARS IS A LOT OF TIME AGO BUT THIS EFFORT ALWAYS SOUNDS FRESH AND WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO GET INSIDE THE BEATLES MINDS. THIS MASTERPIECE BROKE ALL THE RULES AND WHEN BRIAN WILSON HEARD THIS , HE CRIED FROM JOY AND THREW IN THE TOWEL Submitted by tobigal (naples, florida) Was This Review Helpful? Did anyone mention genius... It seems to have been around since pre-history, so indelibly stamped on our consciousness is it. When did you last sit down uninterrupted, and let it wash over you, like it was the first time. Its presence looms so large in the culture of popular music, that it almost a palimpsest- its legend obscures its worth as a living, breathing slice of music that continues to be relevant to any listener today. Yes it is drug-informed- so was XANADU, and for all we know, the craftsmen painting the SISTINE CHAPEL were high on the paint fumes and the incense. It matters only in that it freed their already extraordinary imaginations to fly higher than ever before. Try and listen without the weight of the years- it still has the power to make you lose yourself. Listen 'in' to it, not just 'to' it. Relax--let your mind float-- downstream... The last move in the one-upmanship Historically speaking, the Beatles made Sgt. Pepper because they wanted to top the Beach Boys' album Pet Sounds. And Pet Sounds is just as amazing as this album, but more open and honest and, in all honesty, musically on the spot. But where Sgt. Pepper shines the greatest is in its intense experimentation (for the time). The combined use of exotic instruments, cutting-edge studio techniques (again, for the time), and mixing and mashing it all up with the strong songwriting of the Beatles. Now, even trippier stuff was created after this, but this is the album that truly defined "trippy". Historically speaking, this album was the hugest landmark the music industry will ever know. It will be several generations down the line before something like this happens again. Enjoy it now, and become as excited as the whole sixties became excited when this album came out. Buy it. March On Sgt Pepper! Or Is That Billy Shears? No one can deny that "Sgt Pepper" is perhaps the greatest and most profound album ever released. It ushered in the "Summer Of Love" and is overrated, but then all great works of art are. From the album cover jacket ( which too has been greatly analyzed) to the brilliant musical textures and in-jokes ("A Day In the Life" features the the sound of the air conditioners running full blast..listen for it!) it rightly deserves its number one ranking in most critical opinion polls. I was a bit disappointed that "Mojo" ranked it #51 in its list of the 100 greatest albums of all time; it deserved a much higher position. A musical milestone and cultural landmark...we shall never see its like again. Submitted by Will-T (Lawrenceburg IN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
