Before becoming a solo superstar, Billy Squier had done time in Piper, a Cheap Trick-like 1970s band that split the difference between hard rock and power pop. Some of that sensibility still informs his second solo album and mainstream breakthrough, DON'T SAY NO. While the gargantuan guitar riffs and drum beats are clearly indebted to Led Zeppelin, and Squier's vocal style finds a middle ground between Robert Plant and Freddie Mercury, all the excess of Zeppelin and Queen is mercilessly sliced away, leaving lean, concise pop hooks that drive the record's turbo-charged heavy-rock attack.

The energy level almost never lets up, as Squier and his band careen from one breathlessly infectious-yet-diamond-hard track to the next. "Nobody Knows," one of the only down-tempo moments, reveals a Beatles influence that underscores Squier's pop roots. But it's the sledgehammer groove of "The Stroke" and the AOR nirvana of "In the Dark" that made this album a centerpiece of rock radio in the era when what we now regard as "classic rock" was drawing its last breath, just before giving way to New Wave.

All songs written by Billy Squier.

Recorded at The Power Station, New York, New York.

Personnel: Billy Squier (vocals, guitars, piano, percussion); Cary Sharaf (guitar); Alan St. Jon (keyboards, synthesizer, background vocals); Mark Clarke (bass); Bobby Chouinard (drums).

Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) 5 stars

5 stars Must-have for rock fans
This album is a hard rock classic of the 80s. Several big-time radio hits are here, incuding The Stroke, In The Dark and My Kinda Lover. The entire album rocks from start to finish. If you remember fondly the days of leg warmers, wayfarer sunglasses and girls with poffed up bangs, you need to own this record.

This is the best effort from Squier. Great early 80's rock. I saw him on this tour and he was worth the money to see live. This is a must album for your rock and roll collection.

Although many music fans were convinced that Def Leppard would become hard rock's next big band, few could have predicted the massive across-the-boards success that its third record, 1983's PYROMANIA, achieved. Many wondered why it was taking the group so long to release a follow-up to 1981's HIGH 'N' DRY, but the finished product was well worth the wait. ...

Digitally remastered by Doug Sax (The Mastering Lab, Los Angeles, California). THE WALL was Roger Waters' crowning accomplishment in Pink Floyd. It documented the rise and fall of a rock star (named Pink Floyd), based on Waters' own experiences and the tendencies he'd observed in people around him. By now, the bassist had firm control of the group's direction, working mostly alongside David Gilmour and bringing in producer Bob Ezrin as an outside collaborator. Drummer Nick Mason was barely involved, while keyboardist Rick Wright seemed to be completely out of the picture. Still, THE WALL was a mighty, sprawling affair, featuring ...

Recorded in Cassadaga, New York, New York between April 1997 and February 1999. With their multi-disc opus ZAIREEKA (four CDs meant to be played simultaneously on four different players), the Flaming Lips radically expanded the scope of their melancholy psychedelia, as pop tunes became modernist soundscapes, part-Pink Floyd, part-John ...

British import of the Joan Baez 1992 album, this includes tracks penned by Janis Ian and John Hiatt. This 1994 release finds the iconic folk singer in a pop/rock setting. Song such as "Stones in the Road," "I'm With You," and "Edge of Glory" have strong backbeats and electric guitars; "Through Your Hands" even features synthesizers. Conversely, songs such as "Isaac and Abraham" and "Steal Across the Border" hark back to a largely acoustic, folk sound. On PLAY ME BACKWARDS, Baez's songs are less concerned with political issues of the day, focusing more on personal expression and inner struggle. For instance, on "The Dream Song" she sings, "I had a ...

The liner notes are frustratingly vague on the origins of these 16 tracks. But because the first eight songs feature the lineup that played on their first album and the next eight songs feature the lineup that played on their second album, it seems reasonable to assume that this compiles most or all of the material from Telegraph Avenue's two LPs. It's pleasant if not engaging listening, and sometimes pretty easy to tell where the influence is coming from. "Lauralie" sounds like a variation of Tommy James' "Crystal Blue Persuasion," for instance, while "Happy" has enough late-Beatles pop ambience to please fans of Badfinger or the Nazz; "Sometimes in Winter" has some traits of Santana. Some slight South American folk elements cruise in on tracks like "Sungaligali." The final eight cuts, presumably taken from the 1975 album, are a little more hard rock guitar-oriented, but don't sound all that heavier than the previous ones (presumably taken from the 1971 album). These mid-'70s tracks have an anachronistic feel that makes them feel a few years behind the times, which is if anything a compliment, not a putdown. ~ Richie Unterberger The liner notes are frustratingly vague on the origins of these 16 tracks. But because the first eight songs feature the lineup that played on their first album and the next ...
