Recorded at Can-Base Studios, Vancouver, Canada. In the 1980s and '90s, numerous women recorded blistering rock, but things were quite different in 1976 -- when female singers tended to be pigeonholed as soft rockers and singer/songwriters and were encouraged to take after Carly Simon, Melissa Manchester, or Joni Mitchell rather than Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath. Greatly influenced by Zep, Heart did its part to help open doors for ladies of loudness with the excellent Dreamboat Annie (reissued on a gold audiophile CD by DCC Compact Classics in 1995). Aggressive yet melodic rockers like "Sing Child," "White Lightning & Wine," and the rock radio staples "Magic Man" and "Crazy on You" led to the tag "the female Led Zeppelin." And in fact, Robert Plant did have a strong influence on Ann Wilson. But those numbers and caressing, folk-ish ballads like "How Deep It Goes" and the title song also make it clear that the Nancy and Ann Wilson had their own identity and vision early on. ~ Alex Henderson Heart's 1976 album, DREAMBOAT ANNIE, is easily one of the '70s best rock debuts. Led by two sisters, singer Ann and guitarist Nancy Wilson, who combined the mystical folk of Joni Mitchell with the heavy metal stomp of Led Zeppelin, the album spawned several hits that have become classic rock radio staples over the years. Both "Magic Man" and "Crazy on You" are red hot rockers (the former is an autobiographical tale from Ann), while the title track is more subdued. DREAMBOAT ANNIE showed the largely male-dominated '70s rock world that the Wilson sisters could rock every bit as hard as their macho peers. ROCK ON HEART!! Submitted by dragster (Sydney,NSW,Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Excellent debut Sort of a mini Led Zeppelin, balancing electric and acoustic material into a seamless whole. A staple of late 70's rock, this is still the most consistent record they have made. Submitted by a reviewer (Milwaukee, WI) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Heart: poetry and music This has to be my favorite album by the talented sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson. Though they put out many wonderful songs in following years, their debut possesses the best quality all around. Some have called this project "crudely produced," but this assessment glosses over the fine guitar work and soulful lyrics present in every track. The intro to "Crazy On You" haunts me still, and the feelings evoked by the title track are impossible to shake even after years of listening. It's all better each time I listen to it. I highly recommend this album (and any others by this group) to classic rock enthusiasts, to those wishing to learn varied guitar styles, and to poets and lyricists searching for insight and impact.
