When this sparkling debut by the three-piece Crowded House made its appearance in 1987, those starved for hooks minus the usual sentimentality were finally sated. New Zealander Neil Finn came all the way to Los Angeles from Australia, bringing with him some of the finest melodies and knowing lyrics to come down the pop-music pike in years. With immaculate production and keyboard additions by Mitchell Froom, (who found his fame with this band), CROWDED HOUSE proved to be a stellar debut.
Neil Finn first made his mark as a member of his big brother Tim's band, Split Enz. His contribution to that band gave Split Enz its first international hits (the most notable of which was "I Got You"). Finn continued this tradition of writing and performing harmony-rich gems when he formed Crowded House with Split Enz drummer Paul Hester and Melbourne bassist Nick Seymour. When New Zealand's Split Enz broke up in 1985, the Finn brothers took decidedly different paths. Elder brother Tim married actress Greta Scacchi while going the solo route while Neil founded The Mullanes, who eventually became Crowded House. Following its wildly successful 1986 debut, this Kiwi threesome squeezed out nearly a decade's worth of smart guitar pop reminiscent of The Beatles, the Kinks, and Squeeze before calling it quits in 1996.
This compilation of 13 refurbished and/or remastered tracks consists of stray B-sides and half an album's worth of unreleased songs originally recorded for 1991's WOODFACE. Early tracks include "Recurring Dream," a chiming, pre-Crowded House number, and the wah-wah guitar-soaked "Left Hand," a loose workout spiked by some rollicking piano. Neil Finn's hand firmly steers the band's creative tiller through seas of love and pathos with inspiration ranging from his wife (the melodically rich "I Love You Dawn"), to his dog (a poignant demo of "Lester"). The only non-Finn song is drummer Paul Hester's zany, TV-obsessed "My Telly's Gone Bung." "Help Is Coming," an impressive slice of dream-pop from the band's last demo session, provides the perfect epilogue for this collection of melodic manna.

"Beauty" is not a word often used to describe pop music. But in the case of Neil Finn and the Australian-based trio Crowded House, it is more than appropriate. On WOODFACE, the group is joined by Finn's brother, Split Enz-meister Tim Finn, for an album that's filled with intelligence, grace, and humor, not to mention absolutely breathtaking vocal harmonies. There is a depth and texture to the songwriting and performance in the songs of Crowded House, which is just not found in most popular music.
The CD opens with "Chocolate Cake," a track that categorized Americans as fat and greedy and didn't exactly earn the band a top spot on U.S. airplay lists. The disc moves to the stunning "Its Only Natural" and "Fall at Your Feet." Just listen to "Weather With You" to find out how perfect pop music can be--it's a track that manages the difficult task of never devolving into sentimentality or inanity. The stirring surrender of "Four Seasons in One Day" further demonstrates Neil Finn's ability to transform his deepest, most disturbed emotions into great songs.
The third and best album from the finest rock band Australia has yet produced. A good second would have been Split Enz, but they split up to become errr . . . Crowded House. This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that's topped only by Ron Wood's reappearance on a finale of the Stones' "Ruby Tuesday." Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the band favors highly orchestrated parts, dense guitar riffs, and powerful drumming. Each song is based around memorable vocal hooks and sensitive lyrical content.
Many tracks on CATCH WITHOUT ARMS have a searching quality to them. Despite the sheer force of the music, this release is ultimately marked by well constructed melodies and intriguing harmonic underpinnings. This is due in part to singer Gavin Hayes, who sounds more like U2's Bono than a metal screecher. Hayes's tenor soars above tunes such as "Ode To the Sun" and the title track. When one considers the ancient holy traditions embodied in Christmas and Hanukkah, the words "wacky," "zany," and "irreverent" are not usually terms that come to mind. These appellations are, however, regularly applied to Canadian acoustic rockers Barenaked Ladies. Strangely enough, on BARENAKED FOR THE HOLIDAYS, this unlikely combination of band and subject matter works splendidly, bringing a heaping helping of joy to the most celebratory of seasons.
The North-of-the-border boys' stunningly eclectic musicianship allows them to employ numerous musical toys on Santa's list, including the Lowery organ (complete with its wonderfully cheesy internal drum-machine sounds) that graces "O Holy Night," and the barbershop-quartet-style vocals on "Deck the Stills" (which consists solely of the lyrics "Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young" sung to the tune of "Deck the Halls").
