| | Mel Mcdaniel Greatest Hits CD Mel Mcdaniel Discography of CDs
Released in 1987, Greatest Hits remains the only collection of Mel McDaniel's original hits on the market two decades later, and maybe the reason it hasn't been updated is because it really can't be topped. Sure, at ten tracks it's brief, but it also has all the hits, from "Louisiana Saturday Night" to "Big Ole Brew" to "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On," and showcases McDaniel's easy charm to great effect. Other, longer compilations may eventually surface, but none will get to the core of his spirit as quickly and effectively as this addictive ten-track set. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Brooks & Dunn Greatest Hits Collection II CD (2004)
Greatest Hits music CDs
$9.75 There's no denying that Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn ruled the pop/country roost throughout the 1990s, but this second volume of Brooks & Dunn hits shows that the phenomenally successful duo kept chugging along well beyond their early-'90s heyday. It's mainly occupied by tracks from the late '90s and early 2000s, interspersed with a few new bonus cuts to keep the faithful on board. Those who've kept up with the twosome's career will be familiar with the ground covered by the hits, from the old-school barroom weeper "I'll Never Forgive My Heart" to the nostalgic ...
| | Faith Hill Fireflies CD (2005)
Greatest Hits songs
$15.65 Coming after the relative commercial disappointment of 2002's pop-oriented CRY--and, not at all coincidentally, Gretchen Wilson's rise as the new Everygirl of country--Faith Hill's FIREFLIES is a blatant attempt to ditch the singer's glamourpuss image and reassert her country roots, such things having become fashionable again. This isn't a problem, however: Shania Twain-like chart pop wasn't Hill's forte, and FIREFLIES brings her back where she belongs.
The first single, "Mississippi Girl," is Hill's best song in years. A Dixie Chicks-like piece of sweet country-pop with a few bluegrass trimmings, the tune was written by country hitmaker John Rich. Rich also penned some of the other standouts here, like the laid-back "Sunshine and Summertime" and "Like We Never Loved At All," a dramatic, '70s-style duet between ...
| | Brad Paisley Time Well Wasted CD (2005)
Greatest Hits album
$9.35 Brad Paisley's music is an interesting amalgam of country sub-genres, a paradigm all its own. He melds straightforward, pop-friendly New Country with clever, somewhat Lyle Lovett-like songwriting and the occasional flutter of Joe Maphis/Jimmy Bryant-style guitar virtuosity. Surprisingly or not, this country combo platter made Paisley a star, and TIME WELL WASTED continues in the aforementioned vein. While ...

Greatest Hits songs
$9.89 Johnnie Taylor Philosophy Continues shows the former Soul Stirrers' versatility, but a mediocre effort overall for Johnnie. Producer Don Davis' attempt to widen Taylor's appeal resulted in an album of watered-down Southern soul. Fans didn't expect Taylor-ized versions ...
| | Willie Nelson Healing Hands Of Time CD (1994)
Greatest Hits album
$9.15 Willie Nelson has crossed the borderline between musical genres countless times over his illustrious career. Initially he precipitated a rebellion against those who would dictate what a country record was supposed to sound like. Now fully established in country music as both a songwriter and a singer--having personally defined the outlaw sound--he broke through to the pop market in the late '70s with his mega hit STARDUST, a luminous collection of standards.
In a way, the lush orchestral charts of Nelson's nostalgic HEALING HANDS OF TIME mark a return to the clarity and wisdom of STARDUST, the big difference being that more than half of these standards are classics penned by Nelson himself--songs so imbued with ...
