Willie Nelson wasn't at Liberty Records for much longer than a couple of cups of coffee, but he did record some great material for the label, including "Funny How Time Slips Away," "Hello Walls," "Crazy," and "Mr. Record Man." This set includes all of these, plus a handful of others from the early portion of Nelson's career, and it makes for a fine introduction to the songwriting side of Nelson, since some of the best songs he ever wrote are here. ~ Steve Leggett Willie Nelson didn't spend much time at Liberty Records, but he did record some of his best early material for the label, including his takes on "Funny How Time Slips Away," "Hello Walls," "Crazy," and "Mr. Record Man." The 1973 collection The Best of Willie Nelson offers those four along with nine other well-chosen songs, resulting in a nice summary of the first major phase of Willie's career. Other collections of the Liberty material have been more comprehensive, but this remains the best, most concise overview of those early recordings. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine After several frustrating years trying to get a hit record of his own, C&W songwriter Willie Nelson signed with the Los Angeles-based Liberty record label in 1965. It was the failure of this last-ditch attempt at suit-and-tie slickness that eventually led him to chuck it all and go "outlaw" on the great FACE OF A FIGHTER, recorded some years later. Still, Nelson is one of the greatest of all country singers, and the smooth Nashville production (complete with the Anita Kerr Singers) serves as a pleasingly effective backdrop for his gentle yet tough Texas vocal style. In 1961 Jimmy Elledge yodeled his way to a hit with Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away." Willie's understated version is infinitely preferable to both Elledge's and Kris Kristofferson's later rendition. Compare also Nelson's "Crazy" with Patsy Cline's hit version. (The arrangement is almost identical); again, Nelson's characteristic dryness underscores the limits of Cline's emotive delivery. Far from being some failed attempt at selling out, these sessions are a must for Willie Nelson fans and students of American singing alike. $12.55 On 2008's THE FOUNDATION, singer/guitarist Zac Brown leads his ensemble on a vibrant set of country-rock. While the Georgia-based performer is clearly comfortable with ballads (see his emotive cover of Ray LaMontagne's "Jolene"), he seems most at home on twangy, carefree ...

Best Of Willie Nelson
$18.99 UTAH PHILLIPS BIOUtah Phillips has crafted a fascinating show out of his life. In the course of seventy years he has labored as a dishwasher, archivist, printer, and warehouseman; soldiered in the Korean War; lived as a tramp (he is still a Grand Duke of Hoboes), and for the past 36 years made his way telling stories and singing songs. He has the wit, humor, bite, and intelligence of a Mark Twain or a Will Rogers, and behind his "Everyman" appearance is a consummate artist. Peppered with one-liners and offhand philosophical commentary, Utah's revealing stories, about such spirited American characters as Charley Goodnight, Mother Jones, and Idaho Blackie, tell our true history and connect us to American traditions that are genuinely ours.Utah Phillips is described as "a national treasure, a writer of haunting songs, a storyteller of hilarious presence and subtle depth, a union ...

Best Of Willie Nelson
$15.65 Personnel: Dolly Parton (vocals); Kent Wells (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar); Richard Dennison (vocals, acoustic guitar, keyboards); Randy Kohrs (vocals, dobro); Gary Davis (acoustic guitar, banjo); Brent Truitt (mandolin); Jimmy Mattingly (fiddle); Jay Weaver (acoustic bass guitar); Steve Turner (drums). Audio Mixer: Danny Joe Brown Band. Recording information: Dollywood's Celebrity Theater, Pigeon Forge, TN (12/12/2002/12/13/2002). Photographer: Dennis Carney. Released simultaneously on CD and DVD (both feature the same program), Dolly Parton's 2002 tour, her first in a decade, is captured for posterity for the majority of her fans who couldn't make it to one of the only 13 shows she did. Riding high from a well-received trilogy of late-'90s/early-'00 albums that found the singer/songwriter reinvigorated both artistically and commercially by a return to her hillbilly origins, the show is an especially exuberant performance. Backed by a predominantly acoustic group only identified as Gary Davis and the Blueniques (individual members are anonymous), Parton runs through two hours of faithfully reproduced but agreeably stripped down, bluegrassy versions of hits such as "Jolene," "Coat of Many Colors" and "9 to 5" with a healthy dose of more recent rootsy fare. Dolly is in fine fettle throughout, chatting with the rapturous audience, making jokes and generally hamming it up with her good-natured but obviously rehearsed between-song patter. While some of this is fine and captures the joyous mood, more judicious pruning would make this a better listening experience, especially after the first time around when the jokes and asides are no longer fresh. Having to endure hearing ...

Eagles: Don Felder, Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh , Randy Meisner, Timothy B. Schmit. Audio Remasterer: Ted Jensen. They perhaps took themselves too seriously sometimes (and maybe at other times should have been a little bit more serious), but the fact remains that the Eagles were one of the most memorable singles bands of the 1970s, and their influence, particularly on several new country acts, continues to grow with the passing of time and trends. This brief ten-track collection hits the obvious high points ...
