Following fast on the heels of the band's debut, CROWDED HOUSE, TEMPLE OF LOW MEN was one of the most critically acclaimed yet commercially neglected releases of the late '80s. Opening with the gorgeous "I Feel Possessed," this stunner of an album is an expression of the thrills and dangers of fame and success. From "Into Temptation," where Finn comes so close to adultery that you can almost feel it to "Better Be Home Soon," where his opportunity for redemption lies, the emotion is palpable in every line. Finn is always a bit of a connoisseur when it comes to creative ways of describing coital bliss, and this collection contains the debut of the first of many paeans to the orgasm, the not-so-subtly titled "When You Come." Tim Finn's project to seperate him from his brother Neil, Crowded House put out accessible pop/rock in the 80's that was simple and pure in instrumentation and song structure. Although it takes a bit to get used to the lighter engineering touch of the times of its release, Temple of Low Men has some great tracks on it: "Into Temptation" is a soft and haunting track; "Never Be The Same" is a mid-tempo and very catchy and singable rocker; and "Better Be Home Soon", probably the best known track, is a pretty guitar ode to strife in a relationship. The second half of the cd seems like the better half, but overall a good cd for Split Enz or Crowded House fans.

 Cohesive, innovative and deep
TEMPLE OF LOW MEN stands high in the pantheon of all-around awesome albums. From the creative chording in "I feel possessed" to the chilling yet compelling beat of "Kill Eye" (Kill Eye / separate a man from his life...), from the haunting strains of "Into Temptation" to the musically adept strains of regret in "Love this Life" and the enigmatic "In the Lowlands", this album is the most cohesive I have come across in a long time. This is not a collection of good songs, but a well-choreographed set comprising 10 superb individual pieces.

When New Zealand's Split Enz broke up in 1985, the Finn brothers took decidedly different paths. Elder brother Tim married actress Greta Scacchi while going the solo route while Neil founded The Mullanes, who eventually became Crowded House. Following its wildly successful 1986 debut, this Kiwi threesome squeezed out nearly a decade's worth of smart guitar pop reminiscent of The Beatles, the Kinks, and Squeeze before calling it quits in 1996.

"Beauty" is not a word often used to describe pop music. But in the case of Neil Finn and the Australian-based trio Crowded House, it is more than appropriate. On WOODFACE, the group is joined by Finn's brother, Split Enz-meister Tim Finn, for an album that's filled with intelligence, grace, and humor, not to mention absolutely breathtaking vocal harmonies. There is a depth and texture to the songwriting and performance in the songs of Crowded House, which is just not found in most popular music.
The CD opens with "Chocolate Cake," a track that categorized Americans as fat and greedy and didn't exactly earn the band a top spot on U.S. airplay lists. The disc moves to the stunning "Its Only Natural" and "Fall at Your Feet." Just listen to "Weather With You" to find out how perfect pop music can be--it's a track that manages the difficult task of never devolving into sentimentality or inanity.
