Like Everclear's Art Alexakis, Marcy Playground singer/songwriter/mastermind John Wozniak is clearly indebted to the musical legacy of Kurt Cobain. The best of Wozniak's songs, the standouts on Marcy Playground's self-titled debut, not only evoke Nirvana's sound--heavenly, minor-key melodies, transformed into thorny alterna-pop by a stripped-down, punky three-piece--but Kurt's metaphor-minded, playful yet emotionally intense viewpoint. And where Alexakis sticks to "real life" narratives that peg him a traditional singer/songwriter high on grunge, Wozniak brandishes history lessons ("Poppies"), descents into druggy deliriums ("Ancient Walls of Flowers"), and re-dreams a dreadful pre-adolescence ("Saint Joe on the School Bus") in order to paint a much wider portrait. More often than not, the sinful deviance of the subculture that is Wozniak's natural habitat rises out of his catchy, radio-friendly tunes--"Sex & Candy" being a prime example--making for the kind of slightly dangerous pop rush that is rarely offered in alterna-land.

NME (Magazine) (5/23/98, p.45) - 7 (out of 10) - "...What is surprising is how enjoyable this window on Wozniak's soul is: his lazy drawl and gentle melodies coating his misery in a pop sheen....the mood remains resolutely downbeat but the angst is not imposing..." Marcy Playground Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews It's alright Not the best cd purchase I've ever made but definately not the worst either. A lot of the songs can seem pretty bland and boring at first, but I think if you give them a chance they can grow on you. I especially love Wozniak's voice. I think that's the main element of the album that I found attractive myself. But yeah... it has problems... but overall it's a decent album. One of the greatest cd i own I'm a big music fan. I own about 185 cds this is one of the best. I love the dark melotic sound. It is poppy but very emotional. You can hear the feeling of the song in his voice. It is a really good cd. It hasn't gotten old and i bought it when it first came out. Every song is above average. It's great. Buy it. This band deserves the support Submitted by edmundblack (San Diego, Ca) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
The 3 steps on how to be a one-hit wonder 1.Write a song that is meant to be played on the radio millions of times. Some people will flock to your album.
2.Your album is chock full of songs are bland, boring, generic, sound-alike and just plain weak as the single. It disappoints some buyers and they wish they never wasted money on it.
3.You fade away and are never heard again except by the die-hard fans which are the only fans you have because you'll probably never get any new fans.

Marcy Playground album
$8.49 "The Way" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or A Group With Vocal.
Fastball is nothing if not resourceful. They've obviously done their rock & roll homework, and their aural arsenal includes a wide range of influences they can call upon at will. The jangly "Fire Escape" comes off like a cross between Dylan's "All I Really Want To Do" and Dada's "Dizz Knee Land." The minor-key melodic twists and sarcastic bite of "The Way" suggest Freedy Johnston fronting Cake. "Better Than It Was" is prime power-pop, and could have been an outtake from the late, lamented Posies. The most impressive thing, though, is the way the band brings their ...

Marcy Playground CD music
$7.59 "Do The Evolution" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance and Best Short Form Music Video. YIELD was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package.
Nay-sayers and trends be damned. Pearl Jam's follow-up to 1996's NO CODE continues down the path of aggressive rock and roll, existential musings and musical experimentation. This isn't your older brother's grunge. Opening with the hard-driving "Brain Of J," YIELD goes from a punky swagger representing man's arrogance in asserting his lofty place on the food chain ("Do The Evolution") to a free jazz approach and a disembodied Vedder vocal questioning the meaning of life ("Push Me, Pull Me").
Most of YIELD continues to ply the standard Pearl Jam sound: Vedder's pained emoting, the interesting use of dynamics between McCready and Gossard's guitars and solid rhythm-work ...

$15.65 "Push" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
On YOURSELF OR SOMEONE LIKE YOU, Matchbox 20's debut, vocalist/lyricist Rob Thomas leads his band down the same path as Counting Crows, to a post-Pearl Jam, Van Morrison/Band-influenced home at the top of the charts. Thomas' raspy voice wraps a romanticized alienation around folky, roots-inflected rock tunes that share the thematic aspirations of Van circa TUPELO HONEY and The Band's self-titled second album, if not their literary wisdom.
Having lived through the grunge breakthrough, the Georgia quintet puts ...

Marcy Playground songs
$11.89 "El Distorto De Melodica" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
On their follow up to their hit album SPARKLE AND FADE, Everclear continue to ride the wave of Pacific Northwest grunge that brought them their original success. Mixing three-chord rock and straightforward lyrics about the seamier side of Generation X, Everclear achieve an earthiness that the Foo Fighters and other grunge survivors aim for but never quite seem to attain.
Leader Art Alexakis sings about people besieged by unfortunate circumstances. When he sings "They have never been poor/They have never had the joy of a welfare christmas" In "I Will Buy You A New Life", he makes his characters' plight real with the understanding and insight of someone who's been there himself. Some of the most effective moments come when he draws on his own experiences; his absentee father and his mother's nervous breakdown are each the subject of powerful songs, and when he sings "You wouldn't even know me since you ...
