Taken from the film of the same name, BOOGIE NIGHTS is a compilation overflowing with the "why worry" attitude of disco that is a perfect compliment to the rise and fall of fictional porn star Dirk Diggler. Hand-picked by writer-producer Paul Thomas Anderson, the songs are used as cues for characters like porn star Roller Girl (Melanie's "Brand New Key") who does her thing without removing her skates, and they sound like they were recorded specifically for sex scenes (c.f. the moan-filled "Jungle Fever"). The remainder of this soundtrack shows Thomas's nose for the funkier side of Marvin Gaye ("Got To Give It Up [Part 1]"), The Commodores ("Machine Gun") and McFadden & Whitehead ("Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now").

$8.05 Unlike the rustic roots-rock fodder Darius Rucker has become known for as frontman for Hootie & The Blowfish, his debut BACK TO THEN has its roots in the R&B he was exposed to by his mom as a kid growing up in South Carolina. To that end, Rucker signed on to neo-soul diva Jill Scott's Hidden Beach imprint and delivers 13 soulful cuts that include "Sometimes I Wonder," a breathy duet with Scott (who the genial singer describes as his Tammi Terrell).
In keeping with the album's overall theme, Rucker includes a cover of Al Green's "I'm Glad You're Mine" dedicated to his late mother Carolyn and packed with the perfect combination of snappy rhythms, laid-back horn arrangements and subtle phrasing that would do Willie Mitchell and Reverend Green proud. Other songs of note include the hand-in-glove Snoop Dogg duet "Sleeping In My Bed," the mellow, horn-driven "Wild One," and a raw, goosebump-inducing a cappella reading of "Amazing Grace" that segues into the lush gospel crossover workout "Somewhere." Hootie fans will be interested to check out Rucker's testifying throughout "Ten Years," the final say on a failed relationship first chronicled on the 1995 hit "Let Her Cry."
Includes liner notes by Steve McKeever.

Boogie Nights Soundtrack album
$13.85 Trumpeter and composer Mark Isham rises to the occasion with his score for director Gavin O'Connor's Miracle. The film chronicles the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team's rousing victory over the supposedly superior (then) Soviet Union. Isham engages instantly with the anthemic "The Team," a spirited and memorable slice of Copland-esque Americana that echoes Randy Newman's score for The Natural, and lays the groundwork for what turns out to be a simplistic yet delightful piece of work. Too often composers overwrite their less complex subjects, causing an awkward juxtaposition between the visual and audio aspects of films that should have remained two-dimensional. That Isham succeeds without appearing either jaded or sentimental is a testament to his talents and obvious ...
