Less Than Jake: Chris (vocals, guitar); Roger (vocals, bass); Derron (baritone saxophone); Buddy, Pete (trombone); Vinnie (drums). Additional personnel: Howard Benson (keyboards). Recorded at Mirror Image Studios, Gainsville, Florida. Personnel: Derron Mars (baritone saxophone); Pete (trombone); Howard Benson (keyboards). Audio Mixer: Chris Lord-Alge. Recording information: Mirror Image Studios, Gainesville, FL. Editor: Howard Benson. Similar in sound and approach to their previous release for Capitol (1996's Losing Streak), Hello Rockview shows that Less Than Jake have not lost their appetite for party-laden ska-punk. Horn bursts, rough 'n' melodic vocals, and high-energy performances from the other instrumentalists will please longtime fans, but Hello Rockview doesn't really break any new ground for the band. Still, tracks such as "Help Save the Youth of America from Exploding," "History of a Boring Town," and "Last One Out of Liberty City" would sound perfectly in place at a backyard party, or blaring from the stage of the Warped Tour (on which the band has played on several different occasions). Although many have been tempted to lump Less Than Jake in with the current ska-punk bandwagon, the truth is that they were one of the first bands to combine the two styles back in the early '90s. ~ Greg Prato Emerging as part of the third wave ska revival, Less Than Jake combines near-metal guitar with a punk-inflected rhythm section that splits its time between Jamaican rhythms and '90s pop-punk. The synthesized-sounding horns that accent the ska feel on several of the more syncopated tracks might sound cheesy, but that's sort of the point. Less Than Jake doesn't take itself or anything else all that seriously, and they don't expect you to either. Their image and sound are essentially light-hearted and comical (the CD booklet contains a 12-page cartoon), but that doesn't stop Less Than Jake from raging through HELLO ROCKVIEW like there's a prize for whoever gets to the end of the last song first. Equal parts pop, punk and ska, the album will put off purists of all stripes, but should appeal to those who don't expect spiritual enlightenment from a bunch of rock musicians.

Kerrang (Magazine) (p.53) - "[The album] took LTJ out of the underground to find a much wider audience at the peak of ska-punk's popularity." One of Their Best This CD is amazing. Right off the bat Last One Out of Liberty City gets you going with the amazing bass line. Then songs like Scott Farcas Takes it on the Chin have super catchy horns that just make you jump up and dance. All My Best Friends Are Metalheads is also an amazing song. This album starts a trend that was seen in all the albums after this one as well, that is Roger, the bass player, sings lead more than he usually has before. This adds some different flavor to songs and sounds really good. Chris does amazing vocals as well, but the change just spices it up. Cool album, i say buy it.

$11.29 The story of the Ataris reads like a Hollywood script, with vocalist/guitarist Kris Roe giving the Vandals his demo tape at a show in his backwater Indiana town, only to receive a call out to California by Vandals bassist and Kung Fu Records head-honcho Joe Escalante to put together the Ataris. A 1998 EP (Look Forward to Failure) on Fat Wreck Chords got them attention, and now this full-length on Kung Fu shows what all the fuss is about. The Ataris play pop-punk of the NoFX school, with emo lyrics that are occasionally cringe-inducing but always charming in their heart-on-sleeve frankness. They toured here recently supporting MxPx, which is a good indication as to their genre. The sound is pretty straight ahead, but the quality is uniformally high. This is a band bristling with potential, and one who will doubtless make major waves in the worldwide scene in the years to come.
