Capturing the same laid-back, cosmic country feel as the Flying Burrito Brothers, Emmylou Harris, and the early Eagles, Ronstadt takes songs like Jackson Browne's "Rock Me On The Water," Neil Young's "Birds," Eric Andersen's "I Ain't Always Been Faithful," and country standards like "I Fall To Pieces," and makes them her own. Though she would go on to become one of the biggest rock stars of the decade, she would rarely make music that was as honest, heartfelt or satisfying as that on LINDA RONSTADT.

This 1971 album--the third solo outing by the former Stone Poneys vocalist (the Stone Poneys scored a big hit with Mike Nesmith's "Different Drum" in 1967)--established Linda Ronstadt as one of the leading lights of the West Coast country-rock scene of the early '70s. Given sympathetic accompaniment by musicians like pedal steel guitarist Sneaky Pete and future Eagles Glen Frey, Bernie Leadon, Randy Meisner, and Don Henley, Ronstadt's rich, expressive voice works wonders on this fine collection of folk-influenced country-rock.

This was the fourth in a series of hit albums Linda Ronstadt made in the mid-seventies, starting with HEART LIKE A WHEEL. Like its predecessors, SIMPLE DREAMS is a rich collection of pensive folk ballads, pop with country leanings, and good old rock & roll. Her skill in navigating this rootsy terrain is exemplary, taking her from the swagger of her cover of The Rolling Stones' "Tumbling Dice" to the sweet whisperings of the acoustic "Maybe I'm Right." This record also features some of her most enduringly popular hits, such as "Blue Bayou" and "Poor Poor Pitiful Me."
The rousing opening track, Buddy Holly's "It's So Easy" featuring her trademark growl, along with "Tumbling Dice" and the playful "Poor Poor Pititul Me," give the record moments of electrifying energy. It's the ballads, however, that comprise the majority of the tunes. Included are two traditional songs, "I Never Will Marry" (featuring Dolly Parton) and "Old Paint," both given simple but lovely arrangements by Ronstadt herself. As the '70s were drawing to a close, Linda Ronstadt began to make some slight alterations to her image and the kind of songs she sang. The cover for 1978's LIVING IN THE U.S.A. showed Ronstadt--who usually wore flowing dresses on roller skates, sporting short shorts and a satin jacket. And while she once again drew upon the work of songwriters whose work she had covered previously (J.D. Souther, Smokey Robinson), she also included songs by such bright stars of the moment as Elvis Costello (a nice reworking of "Allison") and Warren Zevon ("Mohammed's Radio.")
The biggest hit on the record was the lead track, an energetic version of Chuck Berry's "Back in the U.S.A", in which Ronstadt continued her tradition of '50s covers (she had already scored big with Buddy Holly, Everly Brothers and Roy Orbison songs). After the chart-topping success of HEART LIKE A WHEEL, Linda Ronstadt released PRISONER IN DISGUISE in 1975, an extremely successful follow-up effort which bolstered her standing as one of America's most popular singers. Opting not to fiddle with a formula that was working, Ronstadt delivered another collection of well-crafted, carefully arranged rock, pop and country songs that showed off her talent for covering good tunes and rendering them in a way that allowed the melodies to soar on the strength of her graceful voice.
The album yielded two strong singles: an exuberant version of the Motown classic "Heat Wave" and a silky-smooth rendition of Smokey Robinson's "Ooh Baby Baby," featuring lyrical alto saxophone touches by veteran session man David Sanborn. Ms. Ronstadt makes great use of the poignant ache in her voice on elegaic ballads like James Taylor's "Hey Mister, That's Me Up on the Jukebox" and Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You," which she sings with considerably less vocal histrionics than Whitney Houston would in her remake of the tune some 20 years later.

Souther and most of the aforementioned Eagles, Ronstadt crafted a magnificent blend of country, rock and folk that is among the greatest records made in a generation.

For their second album, Sonny and Cher largely dropped both the overt Spectorisms and derivative folk-rock of their debut, 1965's LOOK AT US, instead refining the two into an utterly unique blend. There were few protest songs as dazzlingly-arranged as "Laugh At Me," originally released as a Sonny solo single. The follow-up "The Revolution Kind," included as a bonus track, shows the political leanings which would eventually get Sonny elected as a Republican congressman.
Much of the album consists of covers--"Summertime" a la the Zombies' breathy version, "Tell Him," "I'm Leaving It Up To You," etc.--all given the inimitable Sonny and Cher treatment. Even this early in her career, Cher seems certain that attitude counts for more than innate talent. After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But while ON THE BEACH is edgy and deeply felt, it also manages to sound liberating and relaxed, with glimmers of hope and humor peeking through the spare, evocative arrangements. Inexplicably unreleased on CD until 2003, ON THE BEACH is both unflinching and resilient, and easily stands as one of Young's finest albums.

Honestly, it's tempting to imagine (shades of the urban legend about German avant-garde freaks Amon Düül) that when Houston Person signed to High Note Records in the mid-'90s, he recorded one marathon session and all of his albums since then have simply been culled from those master tapes.
