Goodnight Vienna was very much a follow-up to Ringo, on which Ringo Starr called upon his bevy of musical buddies. Most prominent among them was John Lennon, who again wrote the leadoff track, "(It's All Da-Da-Down To) Goodnight Vienna," and played on three songs; also included are Elton John, who wrote and played on "Snookeroo," Dr. John, Billy Preston, Robbie Robertson, and Harry Nilsson. Richard Perry again produced, bringing his strong pop sensibility to the diverse material. The only real fall-off was in the songwriting; the album's Top Ten hits were "Only You," the old Platters song, and Hoyt Axton's novelty number "No No Song," which winked at intoxicants, but little else on the set stood out. Goodnight Vienna was another enjoyable Ringo record, but it lacked the star power and consistency of its predecessor. Still, compared to the rest of his '70s albums, it was a masterpiece. ~ William Ruhlmann Ringo-shy Beatles fans needn't fear, GOODNIGHT VIENNA is one of Starr's most solid efforts, full of infectious pop ditties that benefit from the bejeweled one's amiable delivery. On a par with the self-titled album that is Ringo's milestone, this one finds him tackling tuneful, light-hearted ditties with the kind of quasi-music hall backing that is the hallmark of the drummer/vocalist's best solo work. Though one of the finest moments is a durable cover of Roger Miller's slippery country classic "Husbands and Wives," Ringo scored major hits with two other VIENNA tunes. "Back Off Boogaloo" is wacky and charming, with an irresistible, semi-martial beat, and the anti-drug "No No Song" (written by Hoyt Axton) is impossible not to sing along with. This is one of Ringo Starr's best solo albums since the Beatles split. Although his first record "RINGO" was excellent, "GOODNIGHT VIENNA" was a great #2 release. Even today Ringo is rockin. I mean he is 63 and has still got it. If you like Ringo Starr this has got to be in your collection. Submitted by a reviewer (Yorktown, VA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A Pleasant Surprise Ringo never having been my favorite Beatle, I must confess that I bought the album reluctantly, because I needed the title track (a Lennon composition) for a project I was working on. If I could have found another way of getting it, I probably would have. Much to my surprise, I found the entire album to be excellent and eminently listenable. Good collaborators (such as Lennon, Dr. John, and others) seem to be the key. If you're only going to have one Ringo album, this should be it. RINGO--'nuff said With a little help from his friends, Ringo turns out yet another interesting album--the inclusion of "Back Off Boogaloo" doesn't hurt anything either. Submitted by doncarona (Pittsburg, KS USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Ringo being Ringo Calling in the likes of Elton John and John Lennon and with the bonus of Ringo's No2 UK hit "Back Off Boogaloo", this is a darn good album. (Also heppens to be my fvourite Ringo LP). Highlights include the title track and the "No No Song" Submitted by sarapa (United Kingdom) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Pretty Good Ringo tried to followup the success of his best album with limited success. This is another of John Lennon's lost weekend albums. He helps out a lot, but there's no Paul or George. A few good songs, and no bad ones, makes for a pretty enjoyable listen. Submitted by Paul (Little Rock, AR) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

William Parker's Violin Trio band is one of the more surprising and delightful bands to come out of New York's modern free jazz scene. Goodnight Vienna
$17.95 That Krautrock figures into the picture is the big surprise on Death in Vegas' fourth release, but what's shocking is that Neu! and Kraftwerk are so mimicked on Satan's Circus. For a band headed up, up, up, Satan's Circus is a huge question mark, in career move terms at least, and one wonders why such a derivative album wasn't put out under an alias. Before it gets to the bridge, "Zugaga" is one note off from Kraftwerk's ...
