PUBIC FRUIT contains Curve's first three British EPs--BLINDFOLD, FROZEN and CHERRY (all released in 1991)--plus an extended version of "Fait Accompli."
After a stint in the Roxy Music-like '80s band State Of Play and a 1989 "solo" record by Toni Halliday, longtime musical partners Halliday (vocals) and Dean Garcia (guitars/keyboards) formed Curve with a few musical partners who largely stayed in the background. Utterly unlike either of the partners' previous projects, Curve were distinctly under the influence of My Bloody Valentine and the bands on the UK indie Too Pure, who mixed miasmic guitars, droning synthesizers and thudding electronic beats into a pounding, intense hybrid.
Curve quickly released three UK-only EPs, BLINDFOLD, FROZEN, and CHERRY, in 1991. These vinyl releases were combined into the charmingly titled compilation PUBIC FRUIT in 1993. Less overtly dance floor-oriented than Curve's later records, the songs on PUBIC FRUIT have a swirling, hypnotic effect, helped immensely by Halliday's sensual vocals. There's a krautrock feel here that's sublimated on the later albums.
Curve includes: Toni Halliday (vocals); Dean Garcia (bass).
Producers: Curve, Steven Osbourne, Flood.Spin (1/93, p.65) - Highly Recommended - "...an endless stream of thirsty underground synth-warp, spiraling like DNA and stamping out rhythm like an army wearing Doc Martens....Where Hendrix ricocheted sound from ear to ear of the headphones, Curve lets it drift back and forth, almost aimless..." Pubic Fruit album
$8.15 The original title, Crank, would have been apt. Producer Gil Norton (Pixies, Echo & the Bunnymen) was brought in to toughen this band's sound and set them apart from the wave of U.K. upstarts who were pounding U.S. shores. That he did. But it's not necessarily progress; Talk Talk's master experimentalist, Tim Friese-Greene, gave Catherine Wheel's brilliant debut, Ferment, a dripping beauty, opulent textures illuminating barely hidden firepower. On even the most angry, aggressive tracks, such as "Texture" and "Shallow," this shimmering, shuddering mist was still ever-present. Many of those glistening touches have indeed been subtracted by Norton, and they're missed. That Chrome is still a terrific LP proves Catherine Wheel capable of eclipsing the overload. Like another sharp LP that "cranked" for an hour without much sonic letup, Chrome reminds one of Sugar's Copper Blue. Not because Catherine Wheel covered Hüsker Dü on the 30 Century Man EP; it's because that was the last LP that combined this kind ...
| | Talk Talk Laughing Stock CD (1991)
Pubic Fruit CD music
$7.09 The fifth Talk Talk album, LAUGHING STOCK, was its first following the band's much publicized split with EMI Records (the album was issued by the jazz label Verve). Recorded with a huge complement of string instruments, LAUGHING STOCK is a far cry from the pop music of the band's early days--indeed, there are very few records that sound like it at all.
Containing elements of rock, classical, jazz, and experimental music, it pays little or no attention to traditional musical structures, setting its sights instead on unexplored realms. On "After the Flood," a slithering bass line and low-key drum pattern are colored in with peals of shrieking ...
| | Kraftwerk Computer World CD (1981)
Pubic Fruit music CDs
$9.25 Kraftwerk's music had always been completely based in technology, all the while reflecting a healthy fear of global automation. This album met that fear head on, from the plaintive musical theme and lonesome Everyman protagonism of "Computer Love" to the chilling "Home Computer," which foretells the PC revolution via the group's trademark marriage of relentless, melodic electronic music and stark, touching human imagery. Other landmark compositions include the infectious, oft-sampled "Numbers" and "Pocket Calculator," a cut which stands out even on this album as a milestone in quirky, Teutonic synth-pop.
The surprise album from the German electronic pioneer scientists surfaced in 1981, three years ...

| | Slowdive Just For A Day CD (1991)
Pubic Fruit album
$7.99 One of the most influential albums of the early-1990s British "shoegazer" movement, Slowdive's JUST FOR A DAY is awash in the style's trademarks. Here waves of reverb guitar lines ebb and flow over spare grooves, ...
| | Coldplay Rush Of Blood To The Head CD (2002)
Pubic Fruit CD music
$11.35 "Clocks" won the 2004 Grammy Award for Record Of The Year. A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. "In My Place" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
In 2000, Coldplay appeared seemingly out of nowhere and immediately advanced to the head of the Britpop class in the UK, while easily outdistancing the likes of Oasis and Blur in terms of US popularity. The most striking thing was that they did it with zero attitude and unassuming, melodic tunes humbly presented with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of memorability. That trend continues on the band's second album, A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD.
There's little stylistic alteration from PARACHUTES here, which is just fine, considering how enormously and instantly appealing that style is. While Travis, Elbow, and other entrants in the Britpop sweepstakes offer a not dissimilar sound, none can communicate with the honest immediacy and directness of Coldplay. Part of the key, apart from melodies so ridiculously catchy as to make Belle & Sebastian sound like Public Image Ltd., may be their ...
