Though not as big and swirling as Just for a Day, there's more of an attempt to put advanced song structure and melody in place rather than just craft infinitely appealing, occasionally thunderous mood music. Everything is simplified, as if Brian Eno's presence on two songs -- he contributes keyboards and treatments and co-wrote one tune after turning down the band's invitation to produce -- hammered home the better aspects of "ambient" music. This is no Music for Airports though. On the opening "Alison," the largely uplifting "When the Sun Hits," and the darkly blissful "Machine Gun," Slowdive are still capable of mouth-opening, spine-tingling flourishes. They've found a way to be quiet, moving, and aggressive simultaneously, mixing trance-like beauty with the deepest delayed guitar sounds around, a sound at once relaxing, soothing, and exciting, and most of all harshly beautiful. [SBK released Souvlaki in the U.S. a full eight months after its English release on Creation, with three-quarters of the 5 EP tacked on the end, plus one unreleased track, a memorable, spacy run through Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood's "Some Velvet Morning."] ~ Jack Rabid

Spin (p.110) - "[O]ne of the shoegaziest albums ever." Option (8/94, p.127) - "...Still another member of the wispy, ethereal psychedelic pop brigade...quite satisfying, and even mildly mesmerizing..." NME (Magazine) (5/29/93, p.31) - 6 - Good - "...another exemplary product from spangly guitar heaven...." Souvlaki Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) just close your eyes and drift away.... Just a stunning album, so beautiful.. it might not be the easiest of listens to anyone that hasn't heard much shoegaze for example My Bloody Valentine or Ride, but some songs are just completely stunning on first listen and others will take a few to trully pick up melodies.
The songs that stick out for me are probably the most obvious ones, Alison the opener, Machine Gun and my personal fav 'When The Sun Hits' , which is one if not the most beautiful track i've heard and i've heard a few.. that song just sets off emotions and feelings inside thats its difficult to explain. When a song can do that to me, i know i've stumbled across something very special.
People will get different feelings out of certain songs...its a very moody album, another highlight is 'Dagger'.
This album is great to listen to on your own when your thinking about someone....or even better to share it with them...i promise some of these songs will stay with you for a very long time....enjoy

Featuring Jerry Pfister(tp), Horst Hausleitner(sx, cl), Tom Henkes(dr) The Vienna Dixie Cats were founded in 2002 by Rens Newland. He picked up some of the best and most humourous musicians in Vienna, because one of the main goals of the band is to have FUN! The songs start planless and end planless, but sound as if they were arranged! We call it INSTANT ARRANGING! For our first CD we selected an entirely new repertoire. The goal was to do something NEW in dixiestyle: We took a bunch of great Pop standards and made them our own, sometimes leaving no stone unturned!KurzvitaThe VIENNA DIXIE CATS Die Gruppe wurde 2002 gegründet.
