After being overlooked on his debut, Tones, guitarist Eric Johnson burst onto the airwaves with the surprising hit "Cliffs of Dover." Armed with excellent chops and a clear tone, Johnson took a tired formula and made it sound fresh again. Despite his talents on the fret board, he plays with great restraint and chose to explore a variety of styles, including rock, pop, blues, country, and jazz. While his singing is not quite as interesting as his guitar playing, it is not obtrusive and is at times quite pleasing. This recording has reached near-classic proportions within the guitar community. ~ Robert Taylor
Recorded between March 1988 and June 1989.
Personnel: Eric Johnson (vocals, guitar, lap steel guitar, electric sitar, piano); Steven Hennig (guitar); Wee Willie (harmonica); Steve Barber (synthesizer); Roscoe Beck, Kyle Brock, Reggie Witty (bass); Tommy Taylor (drums); Paul Bissell, James Fenner (percussion); Jody Lazo (background vocals).

Eric Johnson Ah Via Musicom Songs Ah Via Musicom Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Music for all ! Even if "Cliffs of Dover" isn´t as intense as on Guitarplayer´s soundpage in `83, this is definitely one of those "10 cd´s on a desert island"-albums, it has everything I value in music - composition, virtuosity & "feeling".
While you can hear who E.J.´s influences are, he´s definitely his own man, with a pretty unique tone-palette.
It´s a pity the DVD-version fell through.
Highly recommended. Submitted by westin (Sandviken, Sweden) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

The Stratocaster Tone Master This is vey typical EJ but that is NOT to say that it is mundane - not at all! His instrumental work and his TONE are so very pure & violin like that anyone who loves guitar instrumental will enjoy this work. The reason for 4 stars out of 5 is the vocal numbers. They could be left off with no problem but what saves them is the solo portions - superb. Check out Cliffs Of Dover. That alone is worth the price of admission! Would give it 6 stars if I could The speed of Eddie Van Halen, the tone of Stevie Ray Vaughn, and best of all the soul of Jimi Hendrix himself. Submitted by Tim (Greensboro, NC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Good, but he's done better This cd is good and showcases Eric's eclectic and unique style. His compositions are truly wonderful pieces of art. Stand out tunes include the grammy nominated "Cliffs of Dover", "Desert Rose", "NOthing can keep me from you" "trademark" and "40 mile town". However I feel that this is not the best cd Eric has released (although it does contain the INCREDIBLE "Cliffs of Dover" song). If you are new to Eric Johnson, I suggest you buy "Venus Isle" first. The compositions and guitar playing on that cd is DIVINE and is guranteed to blow you away if you are a listener and destroy you if you are a guitar player!
