It may have lacked the longevity of peers like the Grateful Dead and Santana, but Quicksilver Messenger Service was one of the finest bands to come out the Bay Area's improvisatory acid rock scene in the '60s. The twin guitars of John Cippolina and Gary Duncan made for the kind of spontaneous sonic dreamscapes that marked the finer examples of the genre. Like that of its San Francisco brethren, the band's early repertoire consisted largely of long pieces with extended instrumental passages, allowing for plenty of interplay between the musicians. The 12-minute jamfest "The Fool" is a good example of this seminal group's dynamic energy as captured on this debut album.
Quicksilver Messenger Service: Gary Duncan, John Cipollina (guitar); David Freiberg (bass); Greg Filmore (drums).
Producers: Nick Gravanites, Harvey Brooks, Pete Welding.

Quicksilver Messenger Service Music Quicksilver Messenger Service Songs Quicksilver Messenger Service Music Quicksilver Messenger Service Music Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) The groups Best I've bought the original LP in 1969 and no songs were cut. This is the bands best work. Vocals, instrumentals in a collaboration that could be heard time after time with enjoyment each time. Will never wear out. Its evident these were great musicians in there time. Going to see them at BB Kings N.Y. Feb 16 Duncan and Freiberg. Submitted by condr78 (Long Island N.Y.) Was This Review Helpful? Feed your head Quintessential psychedelia. Fabulous melodies, great guitars and vocals, one of the most under-rated bands of their time. Timeless rock and roll, not a weak track on the disc. Break out your tie die and let your freak flag fly! Submitted by Pat (Yardley, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
definitive QMS when thinking of studio "psychedelia", Quicksilver Messenger Service's and Country Joe & The Fish's respective first LP waxings are the ones always springing up to my mind first : wholly original, tuneful, very well played ; what does that guy mean when he complains about two "missing" tracks ; I own the original LP and the SIX tracks featured on said LP are the very same ones that make it on this this CD Submitted by jacquessimonet (brussels, belgium) Was This Review Helpful? Capitol Robs Us Again! Capitol removed two tracks that were on the original '68 LP WHY?!?
Nobody who's a fan of QMS will want his abridged version. Submitted by a reviewer (NE Massachusetts) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A Classic! QSM is one of the great bands of the 60's Bay Area music scene and this is one of the finest examples of the music I was lucky enough to experience as a teenager growing up in San Francisco.
This is the complete album as originally released. My only wish is that Capitol will remaster this album to bring out more clarity in what is now a somewhat muddied issue. At the price this is still an album worth owning. Submitted by Marty (Petaluma, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

Quicksilver Messenger Service
$18.79 Though Moby Grape came blasting out of San Francisco at the height of the Haight-Ashbury scene, they are more related to LA bands like the Byrds and Love, stressing songwriting, arrangements, and multi-part vocals rather than jamming. This debut album stands as one of the finest debuts by any band of the '60s rock era. The Grape's three-guitar line-up is known to have inspired a similar approach with Buffalo Springfield. From the first blast of "Hey Grandma" to the mesmerizing electric closer "Indifference," Moby Grape moved fearlessly from country-tinged romps to blue-eyed soul, with plenty of pounding-in-the-chest rockers throughout.
It's all anchored with tight and inventive instrumental interplay and no less than four songwriters, each with a vocal character that would've made them the ...
| | It's A Beautiful Day CD (1969)
Quicksilver Messenger Service
$21.05 For years, this album was best known for its beautiful cover, a Maxfield Parrish-style pastiche which regularly shows up in collections of the best album covers of all time. The lilting, quiet folk-rock of this San Francisco band, led by David LaFlamme's swirling violin and Patti Santos' soaring vocals, was out of favor for quite some time, but latter-day fans of Belle and Sebastian, Nick Drake, and the Grateful Dead's rustic Americana period have discovered the gentle, calm ...

| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Quicksilver Messenger Service
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of ...
| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Quicksilver Messenger Service
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.
Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how brilliant they could be on stage, and here's another gem, recorded at the Fillmore East this time and featuring 'One Way Out,' 'It's My Own ...
| | Radio Stars Somewhere There's A Place For Us CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
Quicksilver Messenger Service
$16.99 With two albums and a boatload of deleted 45s to their name, Radio Stars always merited far more consideration from the archivists than the earlier Two Minutes Mr. Smith collection allowed them -- and Somewhere There's a Place for Us delivers in fine style. The 29 tracks include each of the band's 45s, a clutch of their better B-sides, and no less than seven unreleased cuts, including one ("Dear Prudence") that dates from the last days of their earlier incarnation as Jet, and two ("My Mother Said" and "The Ghost of Desperate Dan") that hail from an early-'80s reunion of founding members Andy Ellison and Martin Gordon. The ...
