NICK OF TIME was the 1989 Grammy winner for Album Of The Year.
Although famed primarily for her interpretation of compositions by the likes of Joni Mitchell, John Hiatt, James Taylor and Paul Brady, NICK OF TIME includes two fine Raitt-penned songs. "The Road's My Middle Name" is an up-tempo blues number, harking back to her early career performing alongside Son House and Mississippi Fred McDowell. The title track is one of her best, a sensitive examination of the traumas of ageing. Throughout the album her voice is haunting and controlled, bringing new meaning and depth to a varied range of material. Bonnie turned 40 gracefully with this album and it gave her unexpected massive success just in the nick of time.

Nick Of Time
$10.49 On FUNDAMENTAL, Bonnie Raitt trades in the smooth, rich L.A.-sounding production of Don Was for the edgy, reverbless, angular studio approach of Mitchell Froom. Another FUNDAMENTAL difference is that Raitt is writing more of her own material, a trend that's been slowly developing for some time now. Besides her own tunes, there are contributions from Raitt regulars like John Hiatt and Paul Brady as well a tune by Los Lobos' David Hidalgo and Louie Perez ("Cure For Love") and one by NRBQ's Joey Spampinato, who appears here with keyboard-playing bandmate Terry Adams. One thing that hasn't changed is Raitt's ...
| | Bonnie Raitt Luck Of The Draw CD (1991)
Nick Of Time
$11.69 An extremely strong follow-up to the superb NICK OF TIME, LUCK OF THE DRAW continues where that Grammy winner left off--and in a way, surpasses it. Co-produced by Raitt and Don Was, LUCK OF THE DRAW again plays on the singer's rich blues roots and potent slide guitar, with a fair share of the softer, lovelorn ballads that distinguished NICK OF TIME. A gutsy woman who revels in her sexuality, Raitt shapes "Something to Talk About" and the reggae-tinged "Come To Me" into brilliant come-ons, then counters the seduction hauntingly with songs like the heartbreaking "I Can't Make You Love Me," featuring Bruce Hornsby on piano.
The complicated emotional reverie of "One Part Be My Lover" emerged from a poem that Raitt's husband Michael O'Keefe left on her pillow after the couple had argued one night. "Not the Only One" is a beautiful, buoyant love song ...
| | Bonnie Raitt Give It Up CD (1972) Remastered
Nick Of Time
$5.95 GIVE IT UP is the high point in Bonnie Raitt's early career. On it she brings together her R&B, folk, and straight blues influences with a mellow soft rock approach that would become synonymous with the California FM sound, yet none of these elements dominate--Raitt mixes the sounds perfectly. The result is an accessible, sensual music that never relies on cliché for effect, a sound that laid the foundation for her future commercial success.
Raitt contributes a handful of fine originals here, including the snappy, bluesy "Give It Up or Let Me Go," and the beautiful "Nothing Seems to Matter." Yet her excellent renditions of cover tunes like Jackson Browne's "Under a Falling Sky" and Chris Smithers's "Love Me Like a Man" prove she is as powerful an interpreter as she is as a songwriter. (Raitt's next two albums--TAKIN' MY TIME and STREETLIGHTS--would be all covers). Most ...
| | Bonnie Raitt Takin' My Time CD (1973)
Nick Of Time
$7.29 Raitt looks directly to her influences on a version of the Martha and the Vandellas' R&B classic "You've Been In Love Too Long," which kicks off the album, then looks further back with an acoustic rendition of Mississippi Fred McDowell's "Write Me A Few of Your Lines/Kokomo Blues," proving her grasp of the genre. But the record's highlights encompass more contemporary fare, such as Jackson's Browne's "I Thought I Was A Child," Mose Allison's "Everybody's Cryin' Mercy," and Randy Newman's "Guilty," with a light calypso "Wah She Go Do" balancing out these more plaintive compositions. A stellar cast of musicians, including members of Little Feat, Taj Mahal, and Ernie Watts (who played saxophone for the Rolling Stones) puts TAKIN' MY TIME just behind GIVE IT UP as Raitt's best album.
Rhino/Warner Bros. digital remaster of her 1973 album. Features the legendary songwriting ...
| | Best Of Bonnie Raitt CD (2003) Remastered
Nick Of Time
$9.99 THE BEST OF BONNIE RAITT ON CAPITOL 1989-2003 features Raitt's handpicked selections drawn from the era representing her greatest commercial success, kicking off with the three Grammy-winners from her Capitol debut, NICK OF TIME. Always an astute judge of other songwriters, this crimson-haired chanteuse cast a wide net and found chart success and airplay with covers of John Hiatt (the sassy shuffle "Thing Called Love"), Paul Brady (the Fleetwood Mac-like "Not the Only One"), and the little-known Bonnie Hayes (a simmering "Love Letter" and reggae-soaked "Have a Heart"). Other composers given the Raitt touch include Richard Thompson (a gorgeous "Dimming of the Day"), David Gray (the equally heartfelt "Silver Lining"), and Chris Smither (a live and acoustic "Love Me Like a Man").
Throughout, Raitt's ...
