This album is dedicated to David "Buck" Wheat and Voyle Gilmore. It includes extensive liner notes by Robin Callot and Paul Surratt.

Probably the best single-disc anthology of the Kingston Trio's most commercially and artistically successful period--the four-disc THE CAPITOL YEARS box set is more thorough, but its length makes it a bit daunting for newcomers and casual fans--the 20-track CAPITOL COLLECTORS SERIES set shows off the genial pop-folkers to their best advantage. The Kingston Trio, while enormously commercially successful, never quite had the street cred in hardcore folk circles that a Pete Seeger, a Bob Dylan or even a Joan Baez enjoyed. In fact, many in folk circles thought the Kingston Trio were commercial sell-outs bastardizing the form. Viewed in a less harshly judgmental light, it's clear that while the Kingston Trio's records were cut with a larger and more mainstream audience in mind, the quality of most of the material is unimpeachable. Perhaps the definitive version of the oft-sung traditional ballad "Tom Dooley" was their trademark tune, but the comic Boston subway rant "M.T.A." and the anthemic "Greenback Dollar" are equally fine, and the trio's takes on material like "Worried Man Blues" and Pete Seeger's "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" are more than competent.

Tracks 1, 2, 3 and 12 are AAD as well as in mono.

The Kingston Trio includes: Dave Guard, Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds, John Stewart.

Additional personnel: Dave "Buck" Wheat, Dean Reilly (bass); Glen Campbell (banjo, background vocals on "Desert Pete").

Kiran CD  (2007)

Born in strife-torn Ireland, raised under Apartheid in South Africa, and finally arriving in Thornhill, ON in his teens, Kiran Singh reflects his life and times on his debut album, simply titled, KIRAN, a worldly mix of pop, soul, R&B, and funk.

A quiet child who inspired those who heard him sing, Kiran's early love of music has directed his life path, and his experiences along the way have shaped the aural landscape of his songs. Fleeing the political climate of South Africa, Kiran's family immigrated to Ireland, where Kiran, the youngest of three, would be born. Despite the sectarian struggles that gripped their adopted nation, the family suffered no real inequity in Ireland ('If you weren't Catholic or Protestant, the Irish didn't really care,' Kiran remarks). It did, however, provide his first encounter with the disparity of social prejudice.

When Kiran was 4, the family returned to Lenasia, South Africa, an Indian village outside Johannesburg. The country was still in the grip of Apartheid, and segregation was the norm. 'We couldn't live in Johannesburg because one had to be upper-class; we were regarded as middle-class.

' Much of Kiran's childhood was shaped by the political backdrop of Apartheid and its racist policies of which he became more aware as he grew older. 'Because it was segregated, one had almost no idea what was going on elsewhere in South Africa. We lived about 15 minutes from Soweto and didn't know what was happening there,' Kiran recalls. Another time he remembers 'seeing people selling flowers by the side of a road with a sign that read, 'Whites Only'; I asked my father 'Why?' He simply replied that we had our own places to get flowers. It was like that everywhere, for everything.

'Kiran's childhood in South Africa awakened his love of song. Introduced to music by his parents and elder siblings, he remembers 'music could always be heard. It was around the time of Thriller, so Michael Jackson's sound was everywhere. We also listened to old jazz, Nat King Cole, early hip hop and lots of R&B, which was big over there. There were artists like George Benson who were absolutely huge stars in South Africa; but when we came to Canada, I soon realized hardly anyone here had even heard of him.

'At age 10, Kiran was told he would soon be moving to Canada: 'Everyone kept saying it's going to be really cold over there, but I was excited. When we arrived (on a March day) we were driving down the 401 and I could see icicles on the bottoms of cars and my first thought was 'how cold ...
