This limited edition CD is packaged in a multi-paneled digipak with artwork based on a painting by bassist Nick Seymour. This release is limited to about 15,000 copies.
"Beauty" is not a word often used to describe pop music. But in the case of Neil Finn and the Australian-based trio Crowded House, it is more than appropriate. On WOODFACE, the group is joined by Finn's brother, Split Enz-meister Tim Finn, for an album that's filled with intelligence, grace, and humor, not to mention absolutely breathtaking vocal harmonies. There is a depth and texture to the songwriting and performance in the songs of Crowded House, which is just not found in most popular music.
The CD opens with "Chocolate Cake," a track that categorized Americans as fat and greedy and didn't exactly earn the band a top spot on U.S. airplay lists. The disc moves to the stunning "Its Only Natural" and "Fall at Your Feet." Just listen to "Weather With You" to find out how perfect pop music can be--it's a track that manages the difficult task of never devolving into sentimentality or inanity. The stirring surrender of "Four Seasons in One Day" further demonstrates Neil Finn's ability to transform his deepest, most disturbed emotions into great songs.
The third and best album from the finest rock band Australia has yet produced. A good second would have been Split Enz, but they split up to become errr . . . Crowded House. The Finn brothers have been writing songs for many years and it is encouraging to see that their lyrics are as sharp, fresh and perceptive as ever. The opener 'Chocolate Cake' starts with 'not everyone in New York would pay to see Andrew Lloyd Webber, may his trousers fall down as he bows to the Queen and the crown'. Nothing lapses, no standards are dropped. No worries. This one will be around as long as the Beatles.
This is Crowded House's first LP with Tim Finn.

I love it! This CD still is my favourite, probably Crowded House's best work. I never get tired of listening to 'Weather with you' or any of their masterpieces. The only bad things is...they are not a group anymore. Submitted by a reviewer (somewhere, Spain) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Best Pop Album Of 1900's Probably the best 'pop' album of the last century with the combined talents of the Finn brothers working their magic through rich harmonies and lucious tunes. Pop perfection. Submitted by a reviewer (Sheffield UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Mosaic Select: Denny Zeitlin CDs (2009)
Woodface songs
$46.19 Considering the hot pianists of the day were Dave Brubeck, Bill Evans, and George Shearing, what Denny Zeitlin brought to the table as a performer and composer was a unique perspective that could have trumped them all. Had his professional calling not been that of a full-time clinical psychiatrist, he might have been the "it" guy had he received the kind of publicity the other three garnered. This outstanding offering in the Mosaic Select series contains Zeitlin's three piano-bass-drums recordings for Columbia Records done in Los Angeles, all which have become collectors' items on vinyl for their smaller press runs, but also the excellent music contained. The three-CD set includes some bonus tracks previously unreleased, but are not Zeitlin's complete studio works from this period, as he chose not to issue a handful of other selections or any alternate takes. What is included constitutes some of the best modern jazz in a piano trio-based format of the era -- period! The February, 1964 sessions that comprised Zeitlin's first album Cathexis kick off with a minimalist-before-minimalism original "Repeat" that is a good, swinging, shorthand bop that perfectly identifies what the pianist was thinking in terms of progressing the idiom. With bassist Cecil ...
