For an artist of Sinatra's stature, an artistic peak is a thing of no uncertain majesty. Such a peak was reached on ONLY THE LONELY, with the invaluable assistant of arranger Nelson Riddle. Foreshadowed by the glorious sob-fest of IN THE WEE SMALL HOURS, this album is a case of serendipity, where songs, arrangement and performance all combine for an unrelenting dose of heartbreak.
The ominous, film-noirish flatted-fifths of "Angel Eyes" set the scene for a cuckold's tale, which ends with Sinatra's evanescently graceful bow-out, "'Scuse me while I disappear." The timeless "One For My Baby," one of the songs most closely identified with Sinatra, finds him pouring his troubles out to a bartender, who simultaneously pours out the much-needed antidote to the singer's pain. ONLY THE LONELY is a devastating, perfectly rendered account of a man unable to escape the cage of his own shattered dreams .
Recorded from May to September 1958. Includes original liner notes by Sammy Cahn and James Van Heusen with additional notes by Pete Welding.

Magnet (p.114) - "Its ballads are some of the most exquisitely rendered odes to sadness he recorded, with Nelson Riddle's lush orchestral backdrops serving as reverb-heavy guardrails for Sinatro's bel canto encomiums..." In a live performance in London 1953,Sinatra was described as "The ambassador of miserablism " by critics. This was decades before Leonard Cohen,Nick Drake, Morrissey, Scott Walker,Joy Division were given that status. "Only The Lonely" was the first FS album I heard, and I was staggered to hear how desolate it sounded. Over the years, I have put together tracks from FS' suicide sets and few people have managed to sit through its' entire length, and that includes me. Clearly, FS had first hand experience of the emotions of despair that surrounds the music. That's why it sounds so real almost fifty years later. The very pinnacle of the Sinatra/Riddle partnership, it is interesting to note that Sinatra's family hated it and referred to "Only The Lonely" as " listening to death...", whilst FS chose it as his personal favourite recording.
Nobody has ever bettered the essence of sorrow with such haunting beauty before or since. Submitted by Rob J (Letchworth, England) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.

When Sinatra teams up with conductor/arranger Nelson Riddle, you know the results are bound to swing, and swinging is what this brash, jazzy and very upbeat album is all about. Though the Chairman has staked his claim as the preeminent saloon singer, telling tale after tragic tale of love gone awry, this album represents the sunny side of Sinatra. He is bold and energetic here. His undeniably authoritative readings of songs like "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "You Make Me Feel So Young" MAKE them ...
| | J J Cale Grasshopper CD (1982)
Sings For Only The Lonely music CDs
$12.79 GRASSHOPPER was released in 1982 and is J.J. Cale's seventh album. There are 13 Cale originals and one song by Roger Tillison, "One Step Ahead of the Blues." Though Cale sticks to a less-is-more approach, there are subtle shadings of the musical leanings that would creep into his work in the years the followed. While most numbers are constructed upon supple guitar-bass-drums rhythmic beds, "You Keep Me Hangin' On" is built around a piano, and "Dr. Jive" features a vibraphone. J.J. Cale's songs are deceptively constructed--they may sound easy to play, but they're certainly not. The songs' rolling rhythms are especially compelling. J.J. Cale found his sound early on and has not strayed far from it, making one fine album after another; GRASSHOPPER is yet another ...
