(3 Customer Reviews)
Since their departure from EMI for Warner Bros. after 1989's MOTHER'S MILK, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' former label has issued several collections (including 1994's OUT IN L.A., 1998's ESSENTIAL), with the best of the bunch being the 1992 WHAT HITS? compilation. While it's not a thorough greatest-hits collection (only one song from their post-EMI years is included, "Under the Bridge"), it is highly recommended to Chili Peppers newcomers who are unfamiliar with the music from their formative years. Such punk-funk classics as "Higher Ground," "Fight Like a Brave," "Get Up and Jump," "Taste the Pain," "Knock Me Down," and the psychedelic "Behind the Sun" are standouts. At 18 tracks in length, one gets a solid introduction to the Peppers with WHAT HITS?

Alternative Press (2/93, p.42) - "...their pre-Mother's Milk, pre-dead guitarist era was little short of riotous, and if the records don't quite show that, on camera there's more mugging, mobbing and mayhem than you could shake a well-stuffed sock at..." NME (Magazine) (10/24/92, p.37) - "..a most excellent compilation.." Red Hot Chili Peppers What Hits? Songs What Hits? Just Funny I've got goofy after hearing Fight Like
a Brave a million times, it's goofy at
the end of the song with "Fight like a
brave, "FIGHT LIKE A BRAVEE", Don't be
a slave, "EN LOS TRES". That part really
makes me laugh that's why I bought this.
Maybe The Uplift Mofo Party Plan is
another goofy solution. Submitted by William (Napa, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Red Hot Chili Peppers One Hot Minute CD (1995)
What Hits? CD music
$14.09 Like the legendary Spinal Tap's inability to hold onto a drummer, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have grappled with a revolving guitarist problem since the 1988 death of Hillel Slovak. Former Jane's Addiction axe-man Dave Navarro climbs aboard the Chili Pepper Express for ONE HOT MINUTE, which also marks the return of Rick Rubin to the production helm.
Navarro's arrival coincides with a more experimental approach by the group.
The transformations don't so much alter the funk-based sound of the band as they strain it through an ethereal colander of radical time changes. "Warped," the first single and leadoff cut, demonstrates this with a balls-to-the-wall adrenaline rush that abruptly concludes with a gentle outro. Other variations ...

"Californication" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and for Best Rock Song.
CALIFORNICATION finds The Red Hot Chili Peppers once again in the more straightforward punk-funk mode of BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIK. This return to their original sound also marks the return of prodigal son John Frusciante, who takes over for his replacement, Dave Navarro. The Chili Peppers fill CALIFORNICATION with material shaped by personal and ...
| | Red Hot Chili Peppers (1st LP) CD (1984) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
What Hits? songs
$9.85 All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24 Bit Technology.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers' 1984 self-titled debut may not have been as stellar as future releases would be (UPLIFT MOFO PARTY PLAN, MOTHER'S MILK, etc.), but the band's intoxicating punk-funk proved to be a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stagnant rock scene. Original members Hillel Slovak (guitar) and Jack Irons (drums) bowed out just prior to the recording of the debut (they'd return for the next release, 1985's FREAKY STYLEY), as fill-ins Jack Sherman and Cliff Martinez joined singer Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea. The album-opening "True Men Don't Kill Coyotes" was the band's first video to appear on MTV, while "Get Up and Jump" has proven to be a perennial concert staple. Other highlights include "Green Heaven," "Out in L.A.," and "Police Helicopter."
This eponymously titled long-player from the Los ...
| | Red Hot Chili Peppers Uplift Mofo Party Plan CD (1987) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
What Hits? album
$10.15 All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24 Bit Technology.
1987's THE UPLIFT MOFO PARTY PLAN was the album in which the Red Hot Chili Peppers' sound came together. Producer Michael Beinhorn (who would later go on to produce such other alt-rock notables as Soundgarden and Hole) helped the Peppers incorporate more of a hard-rock approach to their already rich blend of funk and punk, with often explosive results. The songwriting is more focused this time around, while the playing is consistently energetic.
Though the album is strong on the whole, selected highlights include "Fight Like a Brave," "Funky Crime," "Me and My Friends," "Backwoods," "Behind the Sun," "No Chump Love Sucker," and the X-rated "Special Secret Song Inside." This would be the best (and sadly, final) album to feature the Kiedis/Flea/Slovak/Irons ...
