(3 Customer Reviews)
The 1998 reissue of COME FLY WITH ME includes three extra songs not included on the original release; "Chicago," "South Of The Border" and "I Love Paris." Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Billy May, Nelson Riddle (conductor, arranger). Recorded in April 1953, October 1957 and April 1960. Includes liner notes by Pete Welding. Digitally remastered by Larry Walsh using 20-bit technology. Personnel: Frank Sinatra (vocals). Audio Remasterer: Larry Walsh. Liner Note Author: Pete Welding. Recording information: 10/01/1957-10/08/1957. Arrangers: Nelson Riddle; Billy May. Constructed around a light-hearted travel theme, Come Fly With Me, Frank Sinatra's first project with arranger Billy May, was a breezy change of pace from the somber Where Are You. From the first swinging notes of Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen's "Come Fly With Me" -- which is written at Sinatra's request -- it's clear that the music on the collection is intended to be fun. Over the course of the album, Sinatra and May travel around the world in song, performing standards like "Moonlight in Vermont" and "April in Paris," as well as humorous tunes like "Isle of Capri" and "On the Road to Mandalay." May's signature bold, brassy arrangements give these songs a playful, carefree, nearly sarcastic feel, but never is the approach less than affectionate. In fact, Come Fly With Me is filled with varying moods and textures, as it moves from boisterous swing numbers to romantic ballads, and hitting any number of emotions in between. There may be greater albums in Sinatra's catalog, but few are quite as fun as Come Fly With Me. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Save yourself several thousand dollars in airfare by checking out this swinging travelogue. COME FLY WITH ME finds Sinatra working for the first time with Billy May, whose bold, jazzy arrangements were a breath of fresh air following the stale, oafish orchestrations of Alex Stordahl. Together, Sinatra and May produced some of the most upbeat, joyful albums of the singer's career. In the tradition of Sinatra's other great '50s theme albums, COME FLY WITH ME takes you from "The Isle Of Capri" to "Blue Hawaii" with stops all over the world in between, each one equally memorable. Miles from the despondent loner of WHERE ARE YOU and ONLY THE LONELY, Sinatra's mood here is vibrant and lustrous, as he dances in and around May's arrangements. It doesn't hurt that May has a special gift for ballsy horn arrangements, as evidenced on the title cut and the Sinatra classic "Chicago."

One of Sinatra's best Great songs, great arrangements. Only disappointment I have, and this is subjective, is the quality of the transfer to cd. The analog lp has more depth and presence. Taking the first track, Come Fly with Me for example, the trumpet section is shrill on the cd compared to the record. Submitted by Lou (St. Albert, Ab. Can.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$7.59 Personnel includes: Ginuwine (vocals); Magoo, Timbaland, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, Virginia Slim (rap vocals); Tim Mosely (background vocals). Recorded at Pyramid Sound Studios, Ithaca, New York. By the time Ginuwine...The Bachelor was released, Ginuwine was already well on his way to becoming R&B's next big thing -- thanks mainly to the ferocious word of mouth his lead single, a cover of Prince's "When Doves Cry," perpetuated. Make no mistake, this was the album that indeed started it all for the young R&B sensation, catapulting him from relative obscurity to ...
| | Rahsaan Roland Kirk Volunteered Slavery CD (1969)
Come Fly With Me!
$9.79 African chanted poetry, jazz and post-bop blues are all heard on this diverse album which features 'Search For The Reason Why', Stevie Wonder's 'My Cherie Amour' and Burt Bacharach and Hal David's 'I Say A Little Prayer'. 2002 reissue originally released in 1969.
Personnel: Rahsaan Roland Kirk (vocals, tenor saxophone, flute, nose flute, whistle, manzello, stritch, gong); Charles McGhee (trumpet); Dick Griffin (trombone); Ron Burton (piano); Vernon Martin (bass); Charles Crosby, Sonny Brown, Jimmy Hopps (drums); Roland Kirk Spirit Choir. Recorded at Regent Sound Studios, New York, New York in 1969 and The Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island on July 7, 1968. Originally released on Atlantic (1534). Before the issue of Blacknuss, Rahsaan Roland Kirk was already exploring ways in which to make soul and R&B rub up against jazz and come out sounding like deep-heart party music. Volunteered Slavery, with its beat/African chanted poetry and post-bop blues ethos was certainly the first strike in the right direction. With a band that included Charles McGhee on trumpet, Dick Griffin on trombone, organist Mickey Tucker, bassist Vernon Martin, drummers Jimmy Hopps and Charles Grady, as well as Sony Brown, Kirk made it work. From the stinging blues call and response of the tile track through the killer modern creative choir jam on "Spirits Up Above" taking a small cue from Archie Shepp's Attica Blues. But it's when Kirk moves into the covers, of "My Cherie Amour," "I Say a Little Prayer," and the ...
