"Unbelievable" was so insanely infectious that many who were introduced to EMF by that single went out and purchased Schubert Dip in the hope that the rest of the album would be equally strong. But unfortunately, most of the CD fell short of "Unbelievable"'s excellence. This isn't to say that Schubert Dip is a bad album -- far from it, in fact. But weighed against "Unbelievable"'s dizzying infectiousness, distinctly British dance/rock/pop offerings like "Girl of an Age," "Children," and the follow-up single "Lies" are fairly catchy, but nonetheless mildly disappointing. The only song that comes close to packing the punch of "Unbelievable" is the intoxicating "Long Summer Days." For the most part, Schubert Dip is a prime example of an album that is simply decent when it should have been excellent. ~ Alex Henderson

A straightforward outing with his trio (which also includes bassist Andy Simpkins and drummer Frank Gant), this excellent studio set features pianist Monty Alexander displaying his bop chops and creativity in a straightahead setting. Highlights include "Broadway," Oscar Pettiford's "Tricotism" and "Never Let Me Go." The fine music on this Lp has yet to be reissued on CD. ~ Scott Yanow
Monty Alexander commemorated his first tour of Japan in 1979 with this studio recording in Tokyo, with bassist Andy Simpkins and drummer Frank Gant. Although the pianist's interpretation of the standard "Broadway" is definitely in a hard bop groove, his shimmering runs are reminiscent of Oscar Peterson or Art Tatum. "Just in Time," powered by Gant's brushwork and Simpkins' imaginative bassline, finds the leader in more of a swinging mood, playfully inserting brief quotes from "Fascinating Rhythm" and "Down by the Riverside." The brisk interpretation of Oscar Pettiford's "Tricotism" explodes after a quick chorus of its well-known theme, with Alexander exploring the full range of the keyboard.
