After the release of their third album, 1983's SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER, and a lengthy tour, Duran Duran split into two camps for about 18 months. Andy and John Taylor formed the chartbound Power Station with Robert Palmer and Chic drummer Tony Thompson, while singer Simon LeBon and keyboardist Nick Rhodes formed the artsier Arcadia.
Superficially, SO RED THE ROSE is a bit more experimental than the Durannies' hit albums, but LeBon and Rhodes' songs--although Duran Duran drummer Roger Taylor plays on the album, he didn't participate in the writing--are fundamentally similar to their Duran Duran work. The single "Election Day" and the ballad "Goodbye Is Forever" in particular wouldn't sound out of place on any Duran Duran album. The lengthier tracks on side two, featuring cameos by folks like Herbie Hancock and art-pop percussionist David Van Tieghem, are somewhat more intriguing.

THIS CD ROCKS Since most of the members of DURAN DURAN are on this album, DD fans will love this CD. In fact, if I did not know any better, I'd say that it IS DD which it is anyway, sort of. All the songs are good, but the single release: GOODBYE IS FOREVER, is fabulous. Submitted by Phil.Mitchell (New Castle DE) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
For Duran Duran lovers! If you've never listened to Arcadia, and you are a Duran Duran fan, you don't know what you're missing. Come to think of it, even if you didn't like Duran Duran, you may very well still like this offering.
Every track is a winner, starting with the first single "Election Day". My favourites however, are Goodbye is Forever, Lady Ice, The Promise (with special guest Sting) and El Diablo. Why we didn't get more singles released from this album is still a mystery to me. It is much less pop-oriented than the usual Duran albums, perhaps their young audience didn't appreciate it as much as they should have. I bet they would love it now though! If you're into 80's music, you can't go wrong with this one! I have it on LP but HAD to have it on CD to be sure I could listen to it at my leisure for the rest of my (happy) days. A masterpiece! I'm a big Duran fan myself, but I really don't think you have to be in order to like this album. It's, to me, better than any of the Duran albums, and every single track is worth listening to. Even if you're not a huge "Duranie", this album is definatly worth checking out. It won't let you down, it's absolutely beautiful! Submitted by nicky (Norway) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$19.59 Velvet Underground's self-titled third album seemed like the debut of a new band. John Cale had left (replaced by Doug Yule) and the group became, for all intents and purposes, Lou Reed's back-up band. The songs actually sounded like rock music and John Cale's screeching musicality was reworked into songs that featured Sterling Morrison's most eloquent guitar accompaniment.
Reed's songwriting moved beyond the armed-to-disarm approach of the previous two albums towards a spiritual level of empathy with the human race--a change that wouldn't go unnoticed. The man who once begged someone to "nullify [his] life" ("Heroin") was now asking "Jesus" to "help me find my proper place," and whooping his way through the equally inspiring "Beginning To See The Light." To this day, every song on VELVET UNDERGROUND sounds like a breakthrough.
In short, VELVET UNDERGROUND showcased the human side of Lou Reed's songwriting. Unobstructed by walls of sonic noise, Reed's insight and genius was finally allowed to shine through.
Brian Eno once said that only a hundred people bought Velvet Underground records when they first came out, but those hundred people all went out and formed their own bands. The rest, of course, is history; the Velvet Underground was the catalyst that helped spark punk rock, and began the growth of an alternative branch within rock and roll's grand family tree. VU's was an unparalleled glimpse into the Summer Of Love's alter ego, complete with graphic, unapologetic descriptions of intravenous drug-use and risque sexual situations. Their 1967 debut, VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO, was a tour de force that may never be equaled for its sheer radicalism in the face of rock convention.
The Velvet Underground also mapped out unconquered sonic territories. Bassist John Cale was weaned on deconstructing classical theory--the perfect avant-garde foil to help bring Reed's terse songs to life. Even more noticeable when he ...
