Though James Taylor wasn't a commercial success until SWEET BABY JAMES made him a star in 1971, one of his finest works is this 1968 debut album. Recorded shortly after Taylor was signed to The Beatles' Apple label by producer Peter Asher, it finds the singer-songwriter brimming with confidence and energy. Featuring elaborate orchestration and even a guest appearance from Paul McCartney, Taylor's debut is more produced than SWEET BABY JAMES.
The ornate arrangements give the album a wonderfully late-'60s sound that perfectly complements Taylor's accomplished acoustic guitar work and warm, assured singing. In addition to containing such strong performances as the bluesy lament "Circle Round The Sun" and the concert favorite "Rainy Day Man," the album features the original high-spirited recordings of such Taylor classics as "Carolina In My Mind" and "Something In The Way She Moves," which are far superior to the more subdued versions that Taylor re-recorded (due to legal problems with Apple) for his greatest hits album in 1975.
Includes liner notes by Steve Kolanjian.

Rolling Stone (4/19/69, p.28) - "...Taylor's restrained delivery contributes to the power of his presentation. He lets the melody, lyric, guitar, and voice speak for themselves. He doesn't hit you with anything that isn't absolutely necessary to get the song across..." James Taylor
$12.95 This features recordings made in 1967 by the rock and roll band in which James Taylor played before he was signed as a solo artist to Apple Records. This 1996 reissue includes versions of "Night Owl" and "Knocking 'Round The Zoo" that did not appear on the original LP version of JAMES TAYLOR AND THE ORIGINAL FLYING MACHINE (which was released in 1970, after Taylor gained solo fame).
James Taylor And The Original Flying Machine: James Taylor (vocals, guitar); Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar (guitar, background vocals); Al Gorgoni (harpsichord); Zachary Wiesner, Jerry (bass); Joel O'Brien (drums).
Recorded in 1967. Includes original release liner notes by Al Gorgoni and Chip Taylor and new liner notes by Chip Taylor.
Have you ever wanted to travel back in time and see how an artist got his start? You can with James Taylor's first taste of success, JAMES TAYLOR & THE ORIGINAL FLYING MACHINE 1967. This is a unique collection of demos and incomplete versions of early songs by Taylor's first group, recorded at the start of his long and prosperous career. Teaming with his boyhood friend Danny Kortchmar and singing lead is a young Taylor who sounds very little like the artist we've come to know.
Instead, this is a very "San Francisco Summer Of Love"-sounding collection that is reflective of the time it was recorded. Still, there are glimmers of Taylor's future style as in the gently sung "Brighten Your Night With My Day" and parts of the psychedelic demo "Kootch's Song." An obvious Motown influence is evident in the funky "Night Owl" and "Knocking 'Round the Zoo." New versions of these two tracks are included for a look at a more polished performer a little further down the line. This disc is a treat for any James Taylor fan.
FIRST TIME ON CD! Recorded just prior to Taylor's signing with Apple Records, this specially-priced 7-cut CD features the original liner notes plus a new extensive history of the release. A must for every James Taylor fan. Song List: "Rainy Day Man", "Kn
| | James Taylor Sweet Baby James CD (1970)
James Taylor
$9.59 The plaintive, melancholic air of "Fire and Rain" resonated with millions of listeners, as did the rest of the album. Taylor's lyrics, which address personal identity, religion, and relationships lost and struggling, are highly confessional, yet associative and lyrical enough to reflect the lives of listeners. At times, he marries the plight of the sensitive soul to the myth of the cowboy in songs like the title track, a kind of campfire lullaby, or to country traditions, as in "Country Road." In all, these elements combine to make SWEET BABY JAMES, arguably, Taylor's definitive statement, and one of the most influential albums in the singer-songwriter genre.
Though James Taylor's self-titled debut introduced his mellow melodicism and affecting songcraft, SWEET BABY JAMES was the album that rocketed him to national recognition. With SWEET BABY JAMES, Taylor abandoned the slightly psychedelic structural ambition of his first record (the first side was composed as a suite), and settled fully into the folk and country styles to which he is best suited. The top ten hit "Fire and Rain," for instance, a deeply personal story-song based on the artist's experiences in mental hospitals and the suicide of a friend, is built around Taylor's gentle, understated voice, acoustic guitar, cello, piano, and drums.
Live Recording
Personnel: James Taylor (vocals, guitar); Danny Kortchmar (guitar); Red Rhodes (steel guitar); Chris Darrow (fiddle); Jack Bielan (brass); Carole King (piano); Randy Meisner, John London, Bob West (bass instrument); Russ Kunkel (drums).
| | James Taylor Mud Slide Slim & The Blue Horizon CD (1971)
James Taylor
$8.65 For the follow up to his classic SWEET BABY JAMES, which rivals TAPESTRY's place in the boomer canon, archetypal sensitive singer-songwriter Taylor wisely elected not to stray too far from the approach that had worked so well on his previous album. He covers another Carole King tune ("You've Got A Friend,") perfects the L.A. folk-rock sound he inaugurated on his earlier work, courtesy of studio hotshots like Russ Kunkel, Danny Kootch and Leland Sklar, whose names are virtually synonymous with Taylor's '70s work. One of the most memorable tunes here, "Hey Mister That's Me Up On the Jukebox" is one of the more effective songs to bemoan the plight of the lonely balladeer, evidence that Taylor mined the introspective troubadour style long before it became a mawkish sham. In other words, don't blame the father for the sins of the wayward sons.
Live Recording
Personnel: James Taylor (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano); Danny Kortchmar (electric guitar, congas); John Hartford (banjo); Richard Greene (fiddle); Kevin Kelly (accordion); Andrew Love (saxophone); Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Carole King (piano, background vocals); Leland Sklar (bass instrument); Russ Kunkel (drums); Peter Asher (tambourine, background vocals); Joni Mitchell, Kate Taylor, Gale Harness (background vocals).
| | James Taylor Gorilla CD (1975)
James Taylor
$6.85 James Taylor's unique blend of well-crafted songs, meticulous production and heartfelt singing are all in abundance here on GORILLA. Featured are the Taylor originals "Mexico" and "Lighthouse" (both aided and abetted vocally by David Crosby and Graham Nash) and the uplifting, reflective "Music," which delightfully interweaves an orchestral harp in and around the melodic web of Taylor's crystalline guitar patterns. The lush mini-suite "Love Songs" opens with a guitar and clarinet duet and finds James moving ever so discreetly into Gershwin territory. Taylor's take on the Motown chestnut "How Sweet It Is" minted chart-topping gold and thrust the introspective balladeer into the role of hit-making cover artist.
Recorded at Warner Bros. Recording Studios, North Hollywood, California from February to March, 1975.
Personnel: James Taylor (vocals, acoustic guitar); David Crosby, Carly Simon, Graham Nash (vocals); Lowell George, Arthur Adams (guitar); Al Perkins (steel guitar); David Grisman (mandolin); Gayle Levant (harp); Jules Jacob (clarinet, oboe); Nick DeCaro (accordion); David Sanborn (saxophone); George Bohanon, Chuck Findley (horns); Clarence MacDonald (keyboards); Randy Newman (hornorgan); Victor Feldman (marimba, percussion); Andy Newmark (bass, drums); Willie Weeks (bass); Jim Keltner (drums); Milt Holland (percussion, wind chimes); Valerie Carter (background vocals).
| | James Taylor One Man Dog CD (1972)
James Taylor
$6.85 Mostly recorded at Taylor's home studio, ONE MAN DOG is an atypical release for a man known for putting out straightforward sets of his distinctive brand of folk-rock. This release from 1972 came after Taylor had achieved a good measure of stardom, and was free to explore some untraditional approaches. After this record, he returned to a more straight-forward format, but ONE MAN DOG has a relaxed, pastoral vibe that makes for enjoyable listening.
The record consists of 18 shortish pieces strung together: traditional pop/folk songs, like the graceful single "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight," as well as humorous, off-the-cuff gems like the ode to a favorite food "Chili Dog," a jig, a drug song ("Mescalito"), and several gentle instrumentals. The production is more low-key than usual, and even though the atmosphere is relaxed, the playing is top-notch thanks to Taylor stalwarts Danny Kortchmar, Russ Kunkel and Leland Sklar. Taylor covers John McLaughlin's "Someone, " with McLaughlin providing a scintillating lead, and elsewhere, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King and Taylor's future wife Carly Simon supply backup vocals.

| | Illyah Kuryahkin Thirtycabminute CD (1999)
James Taylor
$9.69 THIRTYCABMINUTE is a sad and beautiful disc for this sad and beautiful world. Just like the cover artwork, the music lays out 40 shades of blue. It's like some half-remembered song you heard in a strange, melancholy dream. And speaking of strange, let's mention Dean Wilson's voice. Imagine a cross between Thunderclap Newman singer Speedy Keen (that's okay, nobody remembers him) and the possessed Linda Blair's voice in The Exorcist. Wilson sings with a hoarse, whispered falsetto that's bound to alienate the xenophobe and entice the xenophile.
But what exquisite songs he writes. Wilson's unusual indie-folk-jazz hybrid envelops you like a mist. And what exquisite lyrics he pens. They read more like some of the best poetry this side of e.e. cummings. There are also some fine viola, sax, and upright bass performances here. Be forewarned, though. "White Lotus Pool" will be stuck on repeat mode in your disc player until both your family and your coworkers consider an "intervention."
Recorded at Tom Clapp's Soho Sound, New York, New York from January-October 1998.
Personnel: Robert Mann (vocals); Dylan Williams (viola); Daniel Carter (horns); Doug Weiss (upright bass).
Audio Remasterer: Dean Wilson.

James Taylor
$11.89 America’s premier psychedelic noise artists, Yellow Swans have released their first Major work of 2006. Drift is a unique presentation of the more melodic and gentle side of this band. Drift sees shimmering guitars and singing electronic squalls ease effortlessly into the harsh walls of static and burning wires that they are known for. The 3 movements are culled from months of live recordings, assembled into dream-like landscapes by Peter Swanson, with special attention to his meditative drone-work and fellow bandmate Gabriel Mindel Saloman’s mesmeric guitar work. A unique and essential part of this band’s enormous catalogue. Acuarela.
