From the mid-'80s to the mid-'90s, Tania Maria held court as a well-known post-Flora Purim Brazilian pop vocalist . Her dazzling piano chops and sexy air made her quite popular on the festival circuit. Maria's previous efforts for the Concord label branded her a fresh voice, but unfortunately these sessions, compiled by the World Pacific label, sound quite samey overall, or like an afterthought. Most of the material is overtly funky with a dash of Latin spice thrown in, the songs emotionally varying from "come here" to "go away," leaving the listener trapped on an emotional roller coaster. To put it mildly, Maria's stance was always quite confusing, while she sometimes presented herself as strictly a party animal. Though her musicianship is unquestioned, and all of this material is composed by her, her style and stance by this point had become clichéd -- although at times disarming -- and approached disco. Depending on your level of taste, this collection can be fairly satisfying, but only to the staunchest of fans. ~ Michael G. Nastos

$13.29 I have lived in the Philadelphia area since 1985. A “career” musician at heart, I work full-time in another industry to support my family. However I continue to pursue that which gives me the greatest joy. I’ve been involved with a variety of solid music projects over the years as a performer and producer; I’ve served as lead vocalist, percussionist & saxophonist for numerous bands and professional groups. I was fortunate to travel Europe with a world champion symphonic & marching band in my high school years, and later blessed to perform with traditional South American and African folklore groups in places like the Smithsonian, Kennedy Center, the Franklin Institute, and festivals along the eastern seaboard. In addition to my day gig, I work frequently as a voice-over artist, a professional Disc Jockey for wedding & corporate clients, teach music privately from time to time and jump on any opportunity to perform live.I developed a passion for singing and hand-drumming at a young age and fell in love with harmony and background vocals. Ethnomusicology and music therapy became hobbies. Starting in the mid-80’s I began to be hired as a studio musician for a variety of projects. Extenuating circumstances did not allow me to pursue a career in New York, L.A. or Nashville. Although I sometimes regret that music has been less than a livelihood, I have been richly rewarded with some wonderful experiences and have worked with some remarkably gifted people. After years of doing sessions for others, I decided finally to press my own album. Greg Brady once exclaimed in an episode of the Brady Bunch when he and his brothers were trying to record a hit song, “what’s the use of making a record if no one’s going to buy it?” How many musicians I know that still have boxes of CDs filling space in their basements and garages! But, as with all of us artists, it was a labor of love and self-expression that just had to be completed. “Dance through Life” is mostly a cappella and percussion-tinged works in which I’m singing all parts and playing percussion, indigenous flutes, etc. (I utilized a few other marvelous ...

Best Of Tania Maria music CDs
$10.39 A little over two years after his hugely successful fourth solo album, ENCORE, the Warren, Michigan, native and rap icon returns with a compilation album--originally conceived as a mixtape--that serves to showcase his own label, Shady Records, and its formidable line-up of artists. While EMINEM PRESENTS: THE RE-UP is far from a solo album, Eminem himself is responsible for much of the album's heat, producing the majority of the tracks and making vocal appearances on seven songs (including three solo joints).
Shady protegees Obie Trice, Stat Quo, Swifty McVay, Kuniva, and Mr. Porter, newcomers Bobby Creekwater and Ca$his, as well as established stars like 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, and Nate Dogg are allotted time to shine. One of THE RE-UP's strongest assets, though, is the participation of another industry giant, the Alchemist, who (aside from laying down a handful of the album's tightest beats) worked as DJ archivist, putting the track list together to provide the necessary street mixtape feel.
Seemed like drama was always something Eminem craved, but in the year leading up to The Re-Up, the drama was heavy, a really, really bad kind of heavy. He checked himself into rehab, got remarried for a few months to the infamous Kim before that went south, then his best man and best friend Proof is murdered in a bizarre and depressing incident that made all the gangster talk that came previously extra chilling. A mixtape that was originally planned to be released on the underground circuit, The Re-Up has plenty of that serious heat that influenced Eminem to go aboveground with the release. There's the surging remix of 50 Cent's "Ski Mask Way," the excellent all-star single "You Don't Know," a couple clever redo's of Akon's "Smack That" single with various members of the Shady family, and "There He Is" with newcomer Bobby Creekwater living up to his hype over a rich Alchemist beat. Tacked onto the end is Eminem's shining moment, "No Apologies," which speaks to his frozen heart, then lashes ...
