The once monolithic Motown Sound had begun to fragment in the early '70s, and into the breach came Philadelphia International, the label run by genius producers/songwriters Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. Their stable of artists basically ruled the radio and the nation's dance floors in the middle of the decade. The O'Jays were probably their classiest act.
This 1976 album is a typically propulsive affair, despite the fact that founding member William Powell had been forced to leave the group due to illness. He's replaced here by Sammy Strain, a former member of Little Anthony and the Imperials. Musically, MESSAGE IN THE MUSIC is a prime example of the synergy between the O'Jays and Gamble and Huff. It's a brilliantly arranged and sung effort in which all concerned are a little more serious than usual. Socially and spiritually conscious music such as the title track co-exists with deeply sensual love songs like "Desire Me." One of the O'Jays' best.

Her collections, always uneven in terms of material, benefit mostly from her stellar voice, and this is no exception."The Lucky One" and "Heart" start slow and build to a crescendo, perfectly showcasing her range without being obvious. The title track, about finding sex in the seamy side of town, sparked a bit of a controversy, but ended up being her second biggest hit. None of the albums the O'Jays recorded for Philadelphia International in the 1970s were weak or disappointing, although some were stronger than others. So Full of Love isn't quite essential, and isn't in a class with Back Stabbers, Ship Ahoy or Family Reunion. But the platinum album does have a lot going for it, including the major hit "Use Ta Be My Girl," and the heartfelt ballads "Cry Together" and "Brandy," and the captivating "This Time Baby," which would become a hit for soul/disco diva Jackie Moore in 1979. A funk treasure that should have been a major hit was the intense "Strokety Stroke." Once again, the O'Jays worked with Philly's best -- not only Gamble & Huff, but also Thom Bell and Bunny Sigler. The 2005 film HUSTLE & FLOW follows the travails of DJay (played by Terrence Howard), a Memphis rapper and former pimp staring down his 40s and still looking for that initial success. The soundtrack collects a mix of some of the leading rappers of the Dirty South movement, including veterans E-40 and Eightball & MJG, as well as newer lights Lil Scrappy and Webbie. Also included are actual raps by Howard (in character as Djay), and a track from Al Kapone, the ghostwriter of the protagonist's rhymes.
HUSTLE & FLOW plays out like a Dirty South mixtape. The energy ebbs and flows from the rowdy "Swerve," which pairs Lil Boosie and Webbie, to the personal reflection of "Tell Me Why" by Eightball & MJG. Howard holds his own as an MC, particularly on the hook-laden "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp," featuring his unaffected and appealing Southern drawl, while Al Kapone shows off his own skills with a bit of Southern style on "Get Crunk, Get Buck." The HUSTLE & FLOW soundtrack is the perfect complement to the film, effectively capturing the sweat and struggle for success in the crowded world of Dirty South rap.
