Whitney Houston's second album sported a flirtier, sexier album cover and a shortened title, and, somewhat improbably, it became an even bigger hit than her 1985 debut. WHITNEY featured an impressive four Number One hits ("I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)," "Didn't We Almost Have It All," "Where Do Broken Hearts Go," and "So Emotional") and a fifth that went Top Ten, "Love Will Save the Day." Building on what had worked so well on her first record, the dance tracks are frothier and endearingly lighter, and the ballads are bigger and more dramatic, highlighting Houston's genuinely impressive vocal talents without resorting to overly bombastic singing (as she would on later albums). On WHITNEY, the diva shows surprising humility when it comes to her voice, and that restraint helps make it her most likable and consistently appealing set.
Arranger: Narada Michael Walden.Q (12/99, p.160) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...kept the pop juggernaut moving with the spirited 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody'...over-stuffed with plinkety-plonk '80s synths..." Whitney Houston Whitney Songs Whitney Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Excellent follow up Whitney does it again, just 2 years after her debut in 1985, she hit big with this new sound in '87. She showed she can be sexy and flirtaious, and yet still be beautiful. With the two pop hits "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" and "So Emotional" and the stunning ballads "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" and "Didnt We Almost Have It All," she proved then that she would be around for years to come. Her 2nd hottest album!! Whitney did it again with this release as her follow-up to her first album almost two years earlier. She is really terrific in "I Wanna Dance..", "Where Do Broken Hearts Go?","You're Still My Man," and several others. Another fine job she did. A must have for any Whitney fan! Purchase Whitney CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Mariah Carey Daydream CD (1995)
Whitney album
$7.55 All songs co-written by Mariah Carey except "Open Arms" (S. Perry/J. Cain). Samples included "Genius Of Love" (as performed by Tom Tom Club).
DAYDREAM was nominated for 1996 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year and Best Pop Album. "One Sweet Day" was nominated for Record Of The Year and Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals; "Fantasy" was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance; and "Always Be My Baby" was nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
On DAYDREAM, Mariah Carey's singing expands the panorama of its emotional release--her voice, having been a strictly powerful pure instrument, now taking on the thespian strategies of great vocalists. She has added subtle understatement to her bag of tricks. On the hit single "Fantasy," a groovin' piece of soulful pop based on a sample of the Tom Tom Club's "Genius Of Love," the chorus layers generous helpings of her voice. But rather than featuring the high-pitched lead she's famous for, the vocal parts reflect off each other in penetrating harmony. When she gets to cooing the key "I'm in heaven..." refrain as the fade-out hook, Carey's voice carries an enticing faux-innocence to match any of Madonna's good girl/bad girl come-ons. There is also her cover of Journey's "Open Arms," on which the a capella opening drifts into the stardust sound effects and the electric piano accompaniment, and the singer pours herself into a striking, minor-key declaration.
There's also a more obvious modern R&B sheen to DAYDREAM than any of Carey's previous work. "One Sweet Day," her collaboration with Boyz II Men, sways with the sugary gospel cum synth-soul feel of the Philadelphia quartet's grandest romantic ballads. "Always Be My Baby," co-produced by Carey and Jermaine Dupri, expresses the ...
| | Tamia CD (1998)
Whitney CD music
$8.89 It may be a natural sense of restraint (otherwise known as taste) or just a pipes issue that keeps R&B siren Tamia from engaging in cliche melisma histrionics on her self-titled debut. Similarly, it may be a keen ear for perfect pop/R&B hooks or just a collective unconsciousness thing that brings her to base "Falling For You" around a sample of the Emotions' '70s classic "Best Of My Love." Regardless of the motivations behind her choices, TAMIA presents a new voice in a flattering light. It's an album full of sinuous, sexy tunes that will make fans of contemporary R&B prick up their ears.
Personnel: Tamia (vocals, background vocals); JD (rap vocals, background vocals); John Jubu Smith, Michael Thompson, Paul Jackson, Jr. (guitar); Fred Jackson, Jr. , Gerald Albright, Jack Nimitz, Jeff Clayton , Pete Christlieb, Tom Scott (saxophone); Gary Grant, Jerry Hey, Oscar Brashear, Ray Brown , Snooky Young (trumpet); George Bohannon, Reggie C. Whitney music CDs
$8.99 Although she has now been eclipsed by younger urban R&B female stars, Houston will stand as the first to bring this type of clean soul music to the world. In the USA alone, this record stayed in the charts for four years, sold fifteen million copies and spent fourteen weeks on top of the charts. It would be churlish to offer any criticism when most of the world would disagree. The immaculate production is by Jermaine Jackson, bank manager is Clive Davis and even the bathing suit on the back cover gets a credit. It is however, with all its slickness, an indispensable soul album
Engineers include: Darroll Gustamachio, Michael DeLugg, Dean Burt.

| | Whitney Houston Whitney: The Greatest Hits CDs (2000)
Whitney songs
$15.95 It should come as no surprise that a woman who counts Dionne Warwick as a cousin, Aretha Franklin as a family friend, and whose mother was a legendary session and gospel singer, became a phenomenally successful R&B act. Perhaps more surprising is that it took 17 years after first signing with Arista for Whitney Houston to produce her first greatest hits album.
These hits are neatly compartmentalized into a "Cool Down" and a "Throw Down" disc, the former featuring ballads such as "Saving All My Love for You," while the latter showcases remixes of Whitney's uptempo singles such as "How Will I Know." Four new songs, three of which are duets, are also included. At the time of release, her golden voice had led to 16 Number 1 hits (that's two more than Madonna), an Emmy, Grammys and several notable collaborations. A stocking-filler for years to ...
| | Whitney Houston My Love Is Your Love CD (1998)
Whitney album
$12.79 MY LOVE IS YOUR LOVE was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "It's Not Right But It's Okay" won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. "It's Not Right But It's Okay" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Song. "Heartbreak Hotel" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and for Best R&B Song.
Whitney Houston's voice is a marvel of technical perfection. Equally at home with pop, R&B or Gospel, Houston exerts unprecedented control over her celebrated pipes, moving through a song like a graceful bird in flight. It is this quality that makes MY LOVE IS YOUR LOVE such a consistently satisfying work. With a talent like hers, there's no need for Houston to stick to any one formula, so MY LOVE is all over the stylistic map. There's a novel update of the rock & roll classic "Heartbreak Hotel" enlivened by guest appearances from Faith Evans and Kelly Price. There's the no-nonsense "In My Business," where Houston gets down and dirty with hip-hop star Missy Elliott. Appropriately, though, this strong and varied collection closest out with a tune that hints at Houston's church-raised roots, the heartfelt, inspirational "You'll Never Stand Alone."
Engineers include: Brad Gilderman, Manny Marroquin, Rickie St. Hilaire.
Personnel includes: Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Faith Evans, Kelly Price (vocals); Eric Rigler (whistling, pipes); K.B., Spec, Soulshock, Carlin, Rodney Jerkins (various instruments); Ali Boudris (acoustic guitar); Sherrod Barnes (guitar); Michael Thompson (electric guitar); Loren ...

| | Om Lounge, Vol. 7 CD (2003)
Whitney CD music
$10.49 Sink into a beanbag and let your eyelids fall to half-mast -- you've got an open invitation back to Om Lounge. The album doesn't really get warmed up till the halfway point. "Dissolve" is relaxed yet hypnotic, while the male-female duet on J Boogie's "Try Me" is delightfully smooth and seductive. Soulstice, Om's most ubiquitous group of downtempo soulsters, appears on this compilation as well, though it's not one of the band's best efforts. Rithma and Afro-Mystik also contribute tracks, along with less familiar folks including Michael Tello and Colossus. Lazy and stylish, with plenty of Afro-Cuban influences and soulful vocal stylings, this album is exactly what listeners have come to expect from the Om Lounge series. It may not reach out and grab you, but neither will it ever push you away. ~ L. Katz
As with volumes 1-6, Om Lounge 7 continues to push boundaries beyond your typical lounge fare. Includes many new tracks from proven tastemakers and newcomers serving up funky beats, soulful melodies, and beautiful ...
