In the wake of its 1986 album HEYDAY (arguably the finest album of the band's first phase of existence), '80s college rock fave the Church found itself in a position to capitalize on its success. Its follow-up album, STARFISH (1988), contains some of the band's biggest hits, including "Under the Milky Way," while in no way compromising the band's artistic stance--making it one of a notable group of albums that bridge the gap between critical acclaim and commercial success while making absolutely no discernable changes to the artist's sound.
Nearly every track is remarkable. The album opener, "Destination" features an epic psychedelic flavor, the spacious dual guitars of Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper, and Steve Kilbey's arresting lyrical imagery ("In the space between our bodies / The air has grown small fingers"). The above-mentioned "Under the Milky Way" features a bagpipe during its rather spectacular instrumental break. Willson-Piper's "Spark" is an upbeat and strikingly lush pop song. "Reptile" features stunning reverb-drenching guitar work. The list goes on--this is a wonderful record by a band at the height of its powers.CMJ (1/5/04, p.22) - Ranked #4 in CMJ's "Top 20 Most-Played Albums of 1988" Starfish Music | List Price | $7.99 (You save $0.40) | | Category | Rock Albums, Alternative CDs, Goth, Rock/Pop | | Label | Arista | | Orig Year | 1988 | | All Time Sales Rank | 6151 | | CD Universe Part number | 1109849 | | Catalog number | 8521 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Oct 25, 1990 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Ladanyi; Waddy Wachtel; The Church | | Recording Time | 46 minutes |
Starfish Music Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) album in "must have" list I first heard this album when a friend put this on to play while we were kicking back at my place. the first notes of "destination" was all it took. those notes were hypnotic and i haven't returned since. i knew this band was not a "normal" band. when my friend was leaving, i asked if i could "borrow" it for a while. i still have that casette to this day. i've bought more albums from the church, but this one was the most influential, every note was "strategically" placed. there are albums you need, and albums you must have... this is a must have. Amazing I love the Church. This album is phenominal. If you enjoy Joy Division or the Cure then check these guys out; especially this album. Submitted by Nikki (Johnstown, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Sublime perfection "Starfish" is the record that broke Australia's most dynamic and enigmatic pop group, The Church, in the US. Typically, this might be a bad sign for a record, however, in the case of "Starfish", it was a matter of timing and the sheer brilliance of the record that brought this about. This record is as close to perfection as possible for a band to make. Every song is fantastic and the sound/production gives it a continuity that pushes it into the epic realm. The band is so subtle and nuanced in the arrangements of these tunes you might think that they had played these songs for 10 ten years before making this record. Yet, every song bristles with energy and the fever of a band breaking new ground. They know that this is great music as they are making it and the listener feels it with every spin of the record as well. "Starfish" is timeless in its elegance, it has never lost its sheen for me. This is one of the best guitar records I have ever heard, but it is much more than that. Steve Kilbey lives in a sphere all his own as a lyricist. His surrealist prose is magnificent and continues to be provocative. Kilbey's rich baritone and coy delivery is both seductive and engaging. "Starfish" is more than a brilliant swansong the 80's as a musical era, it is a musical highpoint for truly unique pop music.
"Starfish" is an enduring work of art by a band that continues to be vital and productive. If you haven't been listening to their more recent work, "Hologram of Baal" and "After Everything, Now This" are two more classics from The Church, a band who appears to be working from a bottomless well of brilliant ideas. Church´s best album I got this one from a friend who had tripped down under back in 1989 and I said to myself? And I said to myself? Where has this music been? GREAT!!! I remember listen "Blood Money" in Miami Vice and watching "Under the Milky Way..." video in MTV a coupla years earlier...
But the whole album was a nice surprise to my ears.. This one and "GOLD AFTERNOON FIX" are the summum of best Church´s work!
Smart lyrics, and the PERFECT complimet to those lyrics was found in the unorthodox yet catchy music...!!! Submitted by donnerkind (Panama City, Central America) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Starfish album
$7.59 Digitally remastered by Elliot Federman (SAJE Sound, New York, New York).
As with any "best of" collection, UNDER THE MILKY WAY is liable to spark debate among fans as to why their favorite track wasn't included (where IS "Texas Moon," by the way?); but since most of the time these kinds of collections are really looking to score some new fans, the real question should be: Is everything here up to snuff? In this case, the answer is a resounding "yes."
Arranged chronologically, UNDER THE MILKY WAY contains one truly great Church track after another. Starting with its first single "The Unguarded ...

$12.39 I REMEMBER MILES won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
This stunning album is Shirley Horn's loving tribute to her friend and colleague, the legendary late Miles Davis. Davis was so taken by Horn's first album EMBERS AND ASHES that he forced The Village Vanguard to let her virtually-unknown trio open for him during his 1961 run there. Their friendship and admiration for each other's music lasted through the years, and Shirley Horn's 1991 recording YOU WON'T FORGET ME, was one of the last recordings Miles Davis made.
Horn selected mostly ballads from Davis' Columbia Records catalogue for her tribute because, as she explains in the liner notes, ...
| | Church Heyday CD (1986) (Import) Australia
Starfish songs
$8.45 The Church, one of Australia's finest rock bands, offers up an excellent 12-song set that features "Tristesse," "As You Will," and "Disenchanted."
Whether it was the assistance of Peter Walsh on production, a decision to bear down and see what could be done, or some further combination of that and other factors, the Church came up with its best release since The Blurred Crusade with the powerful Heyday. Not changing anything in the basic Church sound but presenting both a brilliant slew of songs and some fantastic performances, the quartet created a flat-out fantastic record. The first side alone almost ...
