Hip-hop owes props to groups like Camp Lo for keeping it diverse. UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT is the debut album from Sonny Cheeba and Geechi Suede, two unique vocalists from New York's The Bronx. Their music is a throwback to the '70s, when good times were as funky as they were abundant.
The beats on UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT, mostly produced by Ski, are not comparable to anything else in current hip-hop, as evidenced by tracks "Black Nostaljack AKA Come On" and "Rockin' It AKA Spanish Harlem" (which both sound exactly like the titles say). "Luchini AKA This Is It" is about the joys of "getting paid," but the horn-heavy sample (from Dynasty's "Adventures In The Land Of Music") and the duo's delivery add enough flavor to distinguish it from the typical "let's-get-money" track.
Additional personnel includes: Tracey Amos (vocals); Pete Levin (piano); Bill Ware (vibraphone); Joe Quinde (bass); Gabriel Machedo (congas); Trugoy The Dove, Ish a.k.a. Butterfly, Jungle Brown, Bones, Karachi R.A.W., Joe Mendelson (various instruments).
Principally recorded at D & D Studios, New York, New York.

Entertainment Weekly (1/24/97, p.57) - "This rap duo cooks up an catchy alphabet soup on their debut, spicing uptown anthems...with black pride, a freaky flow, old-school grooves, and goofy references to '70s blaxploitation mainstays like CAR WASH..." - Rating: A- The Source (2/97, p.80) - 3 Mics (out of 5) - "...these new jacks effortlessly spread their lyrics over...mostly intoxicating funk grooves..." Option (5-6/97, p.96) - "...Filled with beats that never break a sweat, the 15 tracks here nevertheless have a languid charm that combines Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous with elements of old school rap..." This reputation soon led to appearances on Common's LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE and touring as part of D'Angelo's Soulquarians musical outfit. For his stellar debut, the young singer-songwriter with roots in the church and a deep appreciation of Miles and The Duke cast his net wide and came up with material that draws from a wide area of the black ...
