Originally released on Mega Records except for tracks 2, 4 & 5.
Ace Of Base was nominated for Best New Artist, "The Sign" was nominated for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, and THE SIGN was nominated for Best Pop Album in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards.
"Everyone, everywhere! Dance or fade out..." the voice commands on "My Mind (Mindless Mix)," one of a dozen standout dance tracks on this chart-topping debut from Sweden's Ace Of Base. THE SIGN is just that, a '90s disco celebration from Scandanavia that takes hip-hop to be an international cipher for dance music. By blending cool European techno sounds with hip-hop and reggae dance beats, Ace Of Base have developed a provocative new pop style that might one day put them in a league with platinum perennials like Abba.
That Ace Of Base's celebratory club sounds should be emanating from the frozen north of Europe is indicative of the kind of outreach American popular music has always enjoyed. In this case, Ace Of Base's Linn, Jenny and Joker came from a musical family in Gothenburg, affectionately known by its citizens as the `Liverpool of Sweden.' They all studied classical music as children. Linn and Jenny went on to sing in church choirs, while brother Joker became fascinated with vintage analog synthesizers, which brought him in contact with fellow keyboardist Buddha.
The sounds Ace Of Base portray on THE SIGN recall the synth-flavored dance tracks of the disco era, when European electronic bands like Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream enjoyed an enormous popular revival. A tune like "Happy Nation" most nearly depicts the native Swedish roots of Ace Of Base's sound, but otherwise the imprint of the American club scene is everywhere. "Voulez-Vous Danser" echoes the bumptious sound of C & C Music Factory, although Linn and Jenny's vocal harmonies put a decidedly pop spin on an R&B groove. Likewise their mega-hit "All That She Wants," where Linn's icy demeanor undercuts her tale of longing, as synthesizers evoke tropical vistas of Jamaican beaches and reggae bass lines.
Ace Of Base: Linn, Joker, Buddha, Jenny (vocals); John Ballard (background vocals).
Producers include: Buddha, PoP, Ekman, Adebratt, Carr, Stonestream, T.O.E.C.

Don't be scared, mom and dad; though the Backstreet Boys employ a little rapping and hip-hop beat wizardy in their dance-pop amalgam, there's no R-rated gangsta mythology at work on their self-titled debut smash. And though this quartet of video-friendly fresh-faced boys has garnered many superficial comparisons to former teen idols New Kids On The Block, the Backstreet Boys sound has a bit more going for it. A more streetwise approach, hook-filled arrangements, a distinctive mixture of rapping and vocal harmonies and an endless supply of floor-shaking dance beats are the distinguishing marks of these platinum-plus pop poster boys.

| | Ace Of Base Bridge CD (1995)
Sign CD music
$6.29 THE BRIDGE is another chewy hour of bubblegummy Europop that hews close to the one with which this brother-and-sister act put Sweden back on the international pop map in 1994. No stylistic breakthroughs, no daring rushes to the edge of pop's sphere, no deep personal outpourings--just delectable beats and undeniable hooks that apply thinner to Abba's wall-of-sound disco, and then filter it through the modern dance world of reggae, hip-hop, techno and Madonna.

| | Beehive & The Barracudas Plastic Soul With The White Apes CD (2001)
Sign music CDs
$11.59 The second album by the tongue-in-cheek garage rockers Beehive and the Barracudas -- nothing to do with the '80s U.K. psych-poppers the Barracudas, of course -- is a playful but not jokey blend of new wave, '60s garage rock, and DIY punk. Recorded, as before, with an ever-changing lineup ...

| | Hexxers Buried Alive CD (2006)
Sign music CDs
$15.19 It's time to lock up your daughters again, the Hexxers are back on the prowl. As I stated when I reviewed their debut album (Freaks With The Savage Beat - Golly Gee Records), if you think Dickie Harrel went a bit far when he screamed on Be Bop-A-Lula, you best steer clear of the Hexxers, you might get nightmares. If you could imagine Link Wray and Dick Dale playing for Screamin' Jay Hawkins in a rat infested cellar you might be starting to get close. This latest release features two live sets from April and June 2005. Both come with tip-top sound and plenty of atmosphere, and I do mean plenty. The high octane energy of the band oozes throughout the album. The first eight songs come from the Marlin Bar followed by eleven numbers from Fright Night, but despite this there's very little duplication between the two shows. The best of the songs that are on both is a cracking cover of Johnny Otis' Castin' ...
