Don't be confused by the name; DJ Quik isn't offering up a paint-by-numbers in-the-mix recording, or any fancy turntable manipulation. Instead, this multi-talented artist is busy defining a new genre for himself on RHYTHM-AL-ISM. A vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, DJ Quik's abilities and musical interests are too wide-ranging to be contained by any one style. He fuses good-timey, often boastful rapping with vintage '70s R&B and early-'80s Rick James-style funk-rock. Though he's as obsessed with the opposite sex as anyone this side of R. Kelly, Quik has a contemplative side, as seen on "You'z a Gangsta." On this cut, he continually refutes the title's accusation, offering a strenuous enough protest to put you on his side. Mostly, though, RHYTHM-AL-ISM is pure party music-light-hearted, funky and irresistible.

DJ Quik Rhythm-Al-Ism Songs Rhythm-Al-Ism Music Review Average Rating: (4.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews one of the best I don't know why people still have not realized that DJ Quik is one of the best rappers not only from California but in the whole rap game period. He has original beats that know one else has and a sick flow that can't be beat. Don't sleep on his new cd cause it going to be heat like it always is. Quik Is Da Man! Undoubtedly slept on, DJ Quik is perhaps the best overall rapper/producer from the West Coast. This LP turned me on to Quik and made me a permanent fan. Extremely funky and soulful, this LP also showcases Quik's great lyricism. Now I've ordered his whole collection! Submitted by a reviewer (Toronto, Ont) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$6.79 BALANCE & OPTIONS displays DJ Quik at the top of his musical game. Taking a drastic stylistic turn from his previous projects, the new album showcases a growing musical maturity in its warm, soulful, funk-influenced grooves.
The set takes its musical cues from black music's past, running counter to the synthetic productions of much of current hip-hop. From the opening track "Change the Game", with its warm, soul-inflected keyboards, to the Roger Troutman vocoder refrain on "Did Y'all Feel Dat," the mood is clearly rooted in '70s funk. One of the album's highlights ...

There's an added bonus to rap music when it's a DJ who steps to the foreground to represent, both on the mic and behind the boards. Three albums deep, DJ Quik still believes in "makin' endz," this time with SAFE + SOUND. While the West Coast dives deeper and deeper into the ocean of violent gangsta rap, Quik remains true to his past beliefs: money, women and, of course, the funk.
No, not the G-funk, but the P-funk, as the DJ proclaims in his intro, "Street Level Entrance," which accurately blends into a Quik-tempo ...
